That was a really interesting piece. It's not that things were terrible without Jobs, which is usually how the tale is told, they just weren't anywhere near as spectacular.

How was it not terrible? Before they bought Next and brought Jobs back into the fold to help get OS X on track, the stock was trading below $10 and there was rampant speculation about who was going to buy them.

Whoa, and I was just reading some details of his history earlier today, including his leaves to take care of his health. Dude has the magic touch, best of luck to him.
It's strange timing for me too, someone linked a Jobs interview in a thread earlier, I'd never really seen any of the old Apple stuff, so I watched a documentary about them today.

Wow people on tech blog comments are fuckin classless. Seriously, even I'd you hate Apple stuff wishin him dead basically is in poor taste. And denying his immense contribution to the tech world is absurd.

well this came out of the blue. I thought he would be around for at least another 5 years running apple.

Not surprising when you consider his medical situation, but always sad to see someone great stopped by an illness.

I am sure Apple will be fine in the short term but investors won't have the same long term confidence they did in Jobs.

Why? She's like all those G4tv wannabe models and actresses--for eye candy purposes only.

I think the Joanna Stern is one of the brilliant young female voices in technology.

Bloomberg's saying Steve's been confined to his home for the past few weeks but did attend the board meeting today.

I guess my point was that they were just another computer company back then, with the same ups and downs and buy-out rumours and such that other companies routinely experience. After Jobs came back they basically didn't stop growing so it became all up up up which makes the 90s Apple look a lot worse than it was.

Then again, if they really were 3 months from being put out to pasture when he came back then I take back what I said anyway.

Apple's influence moved the tech industry in a terrible direction and a world with a weaker Apple is a better world.

That said (and it did seem a bit weird to say given the chance this is health related), fuck cancer. I wish him a long, healthy retirement.

Stunning career was stunning. Any company would be lucky to have a guy or girl a tenth as good as Steve.

Poor haters though, what words of hope will they rely on now when Apple continues mercilessly slaying the lessors?

I have about 30GB stored of Stevenotes going back to the 80s. Would anybody be interested if they could offer a place to host them?

I hope someone takes you up on this because I want them all.

doesnt he still own half of disney? i know money isnt the problem for him but what kind of job did he have over there?

Back when I got into computers, 1996 or so, Apple was irrelevant. They didn't matter, at all. The company was a laughingstock. Dell in 1997 said the company should close shop and return all the shares.

Now, it's like... holy shit. The only thing I need to complete the Apple set in my house is an iPhone, which I plan to get in a few months. Jobs is amazing, I really hope the company keeps it up.

No where near half, but he is on the board I believe. I doubt he did much beyond work Apple references into Pixar films though.

How so? I mean, their laptops were overpriced but its not like they made bad products.

He owns 7% of Disney stock.

Whoa. Did you just collect that yourself as time progressed, or did someone else archive it?

I could do Youtube but them transcoding already poor quality videos from the 80s makes me cringe.

I stumbled upon an archive of the 80s/90s stuff but have been adding newer ones ever since.

Setup a torrent. Really easy to setup too, unless you aren't willing to burn 30GB of your bandwidth during the initial seeding (in that case, find someone who is and email a few DVDs).

Mind putting into writing what your theory on "priced in" is exactly, so we have something to look at tomorrow?

I'm pretty sure the secret of his resignation was crazy guarded and nobody other than a few people knew before it was announced.

Sure - its called irrational market theory and has been around in finance for quite some time and illustrates pretty cleanly that the market moves of large drops happen before major news announcements. This is a topic discussed in the MBA real on efficient and irrational markets.
