Especially since for certain browsers you simply have to fallback to flash anyway.

Right, but each year fewer and fewer browsers require the fallback, and it's past the tipping point now (>50% browsers by usage statistics support HTML5 video). Moreover, you don't actually need to do anything with Flash to do the fallback, you simply get a stock player swf (Adobe provides one which you can run hosted on their server). So in terms of actually having to develop for Flash, the figure gets vanishingly small.

We can also look at this argument from an end-user perspective. As a proportion of videos watched on the web, how many don't have an HTML5 option right now? A quick Google gives me that Youtube has a >75% share of web video traffic, so that's 75% there assuming no one else supports HTML5. I'd ballpark that Facebook is the #2 video provider online right now, and they use HTML5. In other words, for how many videos on the web do we need Flash? A small percentage, although obviously non-zero.

Also, do you really think that making an HTML5 video player with a Flash fallback is difficult? A significant amount of work or testing? Something that one person with average programming abilities can't do in fewer than ten minutes? Let me know if you believe it is. I will prove you wrong.

Making something more complex, like some kind of interactive presentation that combines videos, graphics, vectors etc, is incredibly easier in flash, and performance is often better too.

Is this statement more or less true than it will be a year from now? Is this statement more or less relevant than it will be a year from now? Is this statement more or less true than it was a year ago? Is this statement more or less relevant than it was a year ago? Provided we haven't already, is it inevitable that we will reach a tipping point?

I was thinking more of custom projects, where you need some special features from the player that are not going to be available in the stock players. The problem is also, even among the browsers that do support video tag, there's still video formats issue, so you can't just use one MP4 video and know that it's going to work on anything. If you do that, it's fallback to flash in firefox regardless. And yes, there's little niggles in various browsers or browser versions, things that work but are not always robust enough (seeking , rewinding, etc.) that are sometimes a hassle to debug or work around.

As for the complex presentation stuff - sure, better authoring tools will become available, but unless there's something that integrates html, javascript and WebGL in an easy way (and until WebGL is universally supported), it's still going to be time consuming, and a hassle to do something complex of that kind within that framework

That stock ain't going anywhere. It's still way higher than it's been for most of its life.

On another note, I really wish I had bought some stock in 2000 after its initial drop. Back then I was a new Mac user and no one knew what the next 10 years would bring. Back then I could have afforded some of it. Now however... not at all. Of course, if I had invested back then, I would be able to afford it now.... catch-22.

Damn you science for not inventing a time machine!

I remember when I bought a bunch of Apple stock at $60 a share. If only I invested everything I had into it...

I remember the days when I was laughed at for having a Mac, which is ironic considering the computers/products they're using nowadays! :P

Our first computer was a Mac (in 93) and I won't change anytime soon.

Didn't wanna post that, but :( sad if those are real (is tmz so prob is)

Not only is he sickly thin but apparently can't even support his own body weight and needs a guy to hold him up/support him... Not a good sign :(

It went from "impressive" to "amazing" when Jobs sliced the Grim Reaper in half with a lightsaber and absorbed the Reapers still beating heart to prolong his own life.

they shoulda had him drown him in cash and houses, but that woulda probably be a bit offensive (but true)

Yea, I think that's what left the longest impression on me. It adds the most context to the picture.

It doesn't matter that you said we should always look to the future Steve, I certainly will but I also won't forget what great things you did in the past :(

Oh wow...yeah, it looks like he's on his way out.

Without knowing exactly what this latest medical condition is and with the understanding that most of us aren't doctors...is there any hope?

Looks like my mum did about 2 months before she died. :(
Spinal Cancer :(

To be honest, no, I don't think so, those pics show someone very far past the point of no return :(

Observe death, approaching. I find it very impressive that he did his job for such a long time. Hats off and all.

He's fucking rich.
In the end, noone gives a shit how rich you are. You still end up as a dead piece of meat.

That's depressing. What's with the cocktail dress?
looks like his regular shirt, he is just missing the pants.

Jack Layton looked like this 2 weeks ago when he announced he was stepping down to fight cancer, he died 2 weeks after that.
however, each cancer patient is different, and I hope he can recover once more.

Holy shit. I was not expecting that. That doesn't look real to me.
Yea I don't know how real it is.

He is pretty skinny though (as you can see in WWDC). All the best to him.

Personally I wish people just wouldn't post paparazzi photos, especially of people dealing with serious illness. It takes a special breed of scumbag to violate someone's privacy at a time like that by taking their picture, and I don't want to reward them with my eyeballs.

Not to be an internet detective or anything, but if that shot is real, than someone is a HUGE a-hole for posting... most likely selling that picture. Besides the already mentioned having to need someone to hold him up, he has freaking bed-head.

Those young Steve pictures are actually making me feel worse.

edit: yay, new page. Having GAF set to 50 posts per page finally pays off, I guess.
