Street Fighter X Mega Man is out

So erm...I think this is bad design.

I've only put in like one minute or less into the game but felt I should state this.

To elaborate more as the screenshot doesn't really show, these things fire wave shots that have tall range and are really fast. Due to the shields, and the height of the waves hitbox, you can only really shoot them when they fire and they do a lot of damage and they both fire at the same time so..yeah.

I thought the same until I realize the charge shot pierces the shield. Kind of weird though.

Does this game save by the way?

Just use a charge attack. It seems to go right through their shields. You can easily kill both at once with just one charged up shot when they're standing still.
Charge shot removes shields? Guess I'll do that.
yeah whatever happened to taking the time to figure shit out

I don't know, where did it?

Just used it myself and yeah it is pretty weird. It just vaporizes the enemies, thus rendering the normal gun useless which is odd for a classic Mega Man.

Nope...not even passwords. You have to beat it in one sitting. I've had the game on for 12+ hours already. I've been stuck on Vega for hours, but I keep taking breaks and just leaving it on (I'm playing it on an old laptop hooked up to my TV) because I don't want to go through the rest of the game again.

Okay, it's actually working this morning. Not without some questionable design decisions but a fun enough fangame when thing occasionally click.

I have to wonder what the reasoning behind the lack of a save function was, though. You couldn't save in Mega Man 1? You can't save in Street Fighter's Arcade Mode? I dunno, but it's fucking stupid either way.

Seriously, how the hell do you beat Vega besides just using Chun legs? Having trouble figuring out when I can actually hit him without taking damage.

That's ridiculous! Would it hurt for them to implement a password system at least?

The game is fun so far but there's some baffling decisions such as this and the inconsistency of the charge shot piercing shields.

The tactic I was told was to hit him when he's not on the gate...I think you can verify with me that such a tactic is a little ineffective.

It took a while but tips for Vega:

1. Always use charge shots. Nothing else.
2. Try to stay as far away from him as possible. His flying attack will have trouble hitting you from a distance.
3. He's vulnerable right after landing from a flying attack, so use your charge shot then. The important thing is that the charge shot has a chance of knocking off his mask or his claws. You have to hope it takes off his claws, as that will make sliding away from his flying attack MUCH easier.
4. Just hope your positioning is good enough and that he stays on the ground more often than not, as his other attacks are easy to avoid. Even his ultra is basically worthless and just gives you a free shot.
5. There is no 5

So are E-Tank placings just completely random or something?

This isn't the first time I've seen them either awkwardly suspended in mid-air or just kinda sitting in the stage elements.

Finally got it to run acceptably again. This is not a good game.

And most people have mentioned my complaints, but my big one is the bosses. Why the hell do the bosses have an ultra meter?

They're already flipping and flying all over the place, and they have way, way too many invulnerability moves and moments. Take Ryu for example, there's absolutely no way there's a pattern to the fireballs. Meanwhile, while I'm jumping and avoiding those as I can, since it seems to be completely random, he pulls out the tatsumaki and starts spinning all over the place, and is completely invulnerable.

My reward, when I do get to attack him? He throws out a Metsu Hadouken. Yeah. Not fun.

You are complaining that the street fighter characters are street fighter characters? The fuck? Fun fact ryu's tatsu going through fireballs is common so it carrying over to the game fits.

Cant help but feel some of these levels like Chun, Urien and Dhalsim were the guys first attempts on the game and never got polish. Rolento and Vipers stages had some nice stuff though Rolento's stage felt like it was just getting started when I hit Rolento. That part before Rolento should have been the halfway point. Honestly for midway point sub bosses they could have done stuff like trying to smash the car while avoiding enemies or the barrel break thing while facing the cart mettools from Chun's stage.

Like I said before its a nice foundation, but all the design went into bosses. It could be built upon as a concept for a small fan series though. Here's hoping it does what it was supposed to though and draw enough hits to get some serious attention for Mega Man from Capcom corporate. Im hoping (much like the Serious Sam indie project) that Capcom begins backing and publishing fangames for Mega Man. If so great things exist and would happen thanks to the fans.

Either they're randomized or the game is glitching out with their positioning. I think I found maybe two or three in static locations.

Honestly with how good the bosses were I was kinda let down by the stages, I kinda feel like the stages are short and simple on purpose though for the sake of getting easier perfects.

No excuse for cheap garbage.
That's not cheap at all I'm sorry. You literally just jump up and shoot them and move on.

I hate that the regular buster shots feel worthless. With all the enemies that either completely ignore them or have shields, I feel like I'm punished for not having a charge shot ready to go at all times. The flame shield enemies make it worse.

I get the shoryuken, but when has Ryu ever been completely invulnerable during a hurricane kick?

This actually helped quite a bit, even though I tried doing that before. Hah. Finally beat him. I had been stuck in the game at that point since around...8 AM Eastern Time. It's now 4:33 PM.

I did take quite a lot of breaks and even took a nap, though...so I don't suck THAT much. Haha.

Mahvel baby! I used his tatsu lvl 1 all the time to punish folks abusing divekick wolverine in Vanilla. Course that was his hyper version...

Well yeah, but I mean the tatsu he uses in /this/ game. Far as I know, any zoner in Marvel can punish a full screen heavy Tatsu, but Mega Man can't do shit. :P

By the time you beat C.Viper and Ryu you should never be using standard buster shots on the stages anyways.

No but that's just how they choose to handle how it avoids fireballs as pretty much everything megaman does is a projectile. Ryu's not even a hard boss anyways. Having aegis reflector makes him a brain dead boss even, watching him ultra himself is hilarous

Game is really fun and especially for free. Too bad there is no password or save feature. I really don't have the time to beat it in one sitting even by leaving my PC on.

Would love this on my 3DS also since MM 1-6 are coming via e-shop. Damn I love old school mega man!

Can't even get the capcom page to load.

Hopefully this means people are downloading the game in droves.

My gut tells me Capcom underestimated fans and was not prepared for this.

Is it available for just today or will it be there tomorrow too?

It shouldn't be going anywhere for a while. Did you try the direct link on the OP? If you click it and let it just set, and it will begin downloading on its own.

I'm trying to play this with my 360 controller and I'm losing my shit... Every time I move forward to jump I slide instead.

Is there any way to calibrate the analog sticks? It's driving me fucking crazy.

Edit: Just used the MS calibration program... Better, but honestly still basically unplayable. I've tested it out with other games and it works fine. Oh well.

This game was okay at best. I hated the bosses. No pattern what-so-ever, just baiting and then getting them in a loop like Street Fighter. Which, I guess is the point, but it makes for a shitty megaman game. And the sprite work was garbage.

EDIT: Not sure why so many people are having problems with their 360 pads, mine worked fine.

Finally beat the game. Besides getting stuck on Vega for a long ass time, the game isn't very hard.

The levels are pretty lame, though. But the boss fights are kinda cool, besides Vega. He's just an ass.

Overall, I had fun. I don't really see myself playing it again, though...at least not for a very, very long time.

I cannot run this at all. I get like 10fps if I'm lucky.

Argh. I hate Game Maker! First Stealth Bastard Deluxe runs super slow and now this is unplayable. Oh well.

Yeah Game Maker has always been sort of an iffy engine. I used it back at Game Maker 5 and sprites would just disappear or glitch a lot. Never really had much faith in the engine series after that. Im really digging Construct 2 though for a simple and approachable 2D engine. Its wysiwyg HTML 5, you can build plugins for it, its cheap, and it has a lot of cool stuff involving lighting and particle effects.

Really easy to work with and runs fast. Even has Windows 8 support now as a plugin. Any indie folks wanting to jump in should be using this IMO over Game Maker.

After a few attempts my download will be complete!

Don't think I'm going to play it quite yet because I don't have a controller.

They should know better than that.

Well then maybe they'll finally listen to what the fans have been telling them nonstop for the past several years.

Just curious but is this game actually done in Game Maker or are we just assuming that?

A quick look with a hex editor shows:

"This game has been created with a Release Candidate of GameMaker.G8.1. It is time limited and will after a short period stop functioning.......FThis game is only meant for testing. You are not allowed to distribute..the game in any way.."

So yes it is made in GameMaker.

Between this and Hotline Miami, GameMaker is becoming the new Flash in "please don't make your games with it if you are planning to distribute it please".

Yeah this game had all the tell-tale signs of Game Maker being involved. The entire game packed in one executable, 30 second initial load time, inconsistent technical performance between different machines, lack of menus, etc.
