Uh?

Here in Italy, VAT is 20% and it's always included in the retail price, so at least in Italy it should be 599.00 €

Threespeech seems sure of launch details:

Sources close to Sony have all but confirmed that the various launch prices for the PS3 in Europe will be as follows:

Ireland - €629 (60GB)
Europe - €499 (20GB) / €599 (60GB)
UK - £425 (60GB)

So, why the difference in prices?

Ireland is an extra €20 compared to Europe due to their VAT rates being higher, at 21%. We weren’t given any real reason to why the UK price is £30 more than that of Europe …erm, other than the cost of living is greater in the UK and retailers won’t budge from their inflated mark-up (as mentioned on
www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=22289)!

Also, you may have heard that Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Corporation, was quoted as saying the launch was going to be in April. We can confirm that this was a mistake and that everything is still being lined up for the March 23 launch date!

727.62 / 909.53 -> Mexico

Mexico's prices (including taxes):

PS3 20GB - The cheapest I've seen it on-line is: $824
PS3 60GB - I've seen it from $1,098.50 to $1,235.60

That's even more insane than the 8000/10000 pesos I put in the list...
I'll change it and put 850/1150 instead.

The complete and utter confusion between the different departments at Sony is ****ing embarassing.

Anyway does this confirm that there will be the 20GB model in Europe with the exception of UK?

The UK PS3 website does mention a 20GB PS3 at 499 euro.
No GBP price though, which is strange.

(click "ask a question", then go to price)

How much will PLAYSTATION®3 cost?
Equipped with a Blu-ray drive, pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) and Wireless controller as standard, PLAYSTATION®3 will be available at €499 (20GB) and €599 (60GB).

The Irish site (http://eu.playstation.com/ps3/index.html?locale=en_IE)

How much will PLAYSTATION®3 cost?
Equipped with a Blu-ray drive, pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) and Wirelesss controller as standard, the 60GB PLAYSTATION®3 will be available at launch in Ireland for €629.99. The 20GB (€529.99) will not be available at launch in Ireland.

Oh dear lord I think i'll buy a PS3 when they're available in the shops and I don't care when I want to be surprised.

I knew it was going to be 499/599€, but it still annoys me after the delays and all that they come with those prices, and i am thinknig Sony is in for a rude awakening in Europe this time.

How does Blu Ray have more potential? HDDVD has 51GB discs coming out. HDDVD allready has downloadable content compatible players, they allready have the interactivity working (Blu Ray lacks both currently and are shooting for a summer launch of both).

Its like if people keep spreading enough FUD it becomes true.

To my knowledge, it has not been indicated whether current HD-DVD players will be able to support triple-layer disks.

Regardless, at CES multi-layered BluRay Disks were shown (beyond 2 layers) ... and the current consensus is that previous players may be compatible.

Beyond capacity, BluRay supports a higher bit-rate for both audio and video. There is no FUD here, BluRay is simply the better tech.

So.. is this firmware update fixing everything (well, the most prominent ones like adding better scaler for 720p/1080i materials along with improved emulation of PS2 titles for 480i in time for Euro-launch confirmed? I've checked the firmware updates a few days ago, and there wasn't anything new since christmas it seems...

The Legend of BorkBork: BorkBorkity Borking
When do you hit a break-even point with the cost of the console?
Stringer: Well, I think Kutaragi-san (PlayStation chief Ken Kutaragi) said that it would be break-even by the end of the year, at the end of '07. PS2 was not profitable in the first year. You make it up on the content as the content gathers momentum, the licensees from that and so forth. But the current understanding is that it will be break-even by the end of '07.

:lol :lol :lol

Good luck with that.
