I'm probably very, very late to party on this. So I just read that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was barely animated in HD (540p). WTF Bones! Is that a common practice? I was looking into the RahXephon Blu-ray release, which is apparently another crappy upscale. Though, that shouldn't have been a surprise given it's production year.
There is a tradeoff for having consistently good animation like BONES does.

Also, Rahxephon will probably never look good. Not because it's SD -- there are plenty of nice looking, well-done upscales. But because it looks pretty not good. It's very blurry and jaggy, it clearly suffers from being an early digital production despite the talent of the people working on it.

Denpa and School Days are the only two anime's that made me experience some sort of rage inside.

I have no idea how I finished both to completion.

Oh look. AnimeGAF hating on SHAFT. How new and original.

I've only seen 4 SHAFT shows:

-Madoka (enjoyed)
-Bakemonogatari (enjoyed)
-Arakawa (okay at first but dropped because the setting had no appeal to me)
-Denpa (disliked)

It's not a trade off though. It's two totally unrelated issues. You can have good high production HD animation and have constantly good animation too. One is a matter of technology and equipment, the other is a matter of staff and manpower. BONES gets the staff and manpower from having strong connections in the industry and offering attractive projects to work on. They use outdated equipment and production methods because their digital team seems poorly managed or they just don't care.

Yeah but if they upgraded their Pentium 3 PCs they wouldn't have money for good animators anymore :(

duckroll said:
Cheap in terms of studio equipment? Probably. But they still have some of the best animators in the industry working with them all the time. :)
They sure do know how to animate a good kissing scene between manly men.

I can kind of forgive them since Brotherhood was 64 episodes long. Still, they could have at least animated it at 720p. :\ I've actually only watched the first episode of it, despite owning the first box set. >_>

Like what? I'm under the impression that every upscale has been crummy.

Any of them based off a nice looking show and not filtered to hell. Samurai Champloo (second encode released this year, not the old one), Baccano, FMP+Fumoffu, etc.

Even if they aren't HD, a good looking upscale is just going to look visibly better than the DVDs because H.264 AVC with a 40Mbp/s limit is going to allow for a much nicer image (pretty much artifact free) than MPEG-2 with a 9.8Mbp/s limit.

I liked Zetsubou Sensei (though it started to drag after two seasons) and Madoka. Dont' know what other Shaft stuff I've seen besides Vampire Bund I guess

True. I didn't know they released a better version of Samurai Champloo.

Sacred Seven 9
tumblr_lqo41eU16q1qfi5lmo1_250.gif

It feels like the animators and story writers decided to go all out in this episode on the Soul of a Rolling Stone. This would have made an excellent final episode and it showed that there is just so much to the Sacred Seven Power. Alma was really quite awesome and powerful. The little scenes with Ruri x Alma are kind of funny for the life type aspect of the show. I usually thought the maids were just an distraction but wow they did end up serving a purpose, albeit useless, but still.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko 06:

Ugh, add this one to the "rage recommendations". I *hate* Ryuuko. Wtf, how insane can a person be? She´s mentally ill, a 5 year-old in a 16 year-old´s body. Not that Mawekawa-chan is much better, putting on all kinds of weird costumes. Argh. And the she has fully entered Harem-mode now. sigh.

Why would you rage about Katanagatari?

The ending, probably.

Mawaru Penguindrum 08
That sealed the deal.
Shouma really did fall for Ringo. I expect her to do something incredibly stupid while hes down for the count.
Probably the best episode to date too.

Twin Angel 4

This episode... this episode was something ridiculous, awesome and outrageous all at the same time. It even had some gif potential, like when Haruka pops up from the ground.

MotionBlue said:

That's my only thought as well, and yeah, I didn't like the ending much... but still, I don't think it was quite rage-worthy.

Ridiculous, awesome, and outrageous? Expect more of that as you continue on...

And there it should remain.

Does she ever get less annoying?
I don't think she's that annoying. That is the episode that focuses the most on her, though, so don't expect that focus to continue.

People don't understand that level of fabulousness
Sadly (?) true... :)

Since it won´t be too long till I´m finished with Denpa: Any more recommendations for a school-slice of life-anime? Preferable something along the lines of Clannad or True Tears or Myself;Yourself. Also preferably no harem, of if there is one, have it be countered by featuring more than one male character.

Why don't you ask for something good instead.

K-ON

Mayo Chiki 09

That was disappointingly anti-climactic given last weeks episode.
Usami centric episode, signs that the show might go full harem ending. I hope it doesn't.

Next episode seems to be another throw away, with the the Hero's homelife being explained in detail.

What, I enjoy those light-hearted adventures of youth (shears a tear :/). Clannad was really good. Or, to expand on possible recommendations, anything where a bunch of teenagers/young adults gets into an unusual situation is fine to. I loved Bokurano, for example. Or Infinite Ryvius.

Edit: And I won´t watch K-On...

Try Hyakko, it's actually pretty good

Well, this episode showed more of that alright!
Gives a new meaning to the silly cliché of not recognizing disguised characters that aren't disguised at all, just wearing some silly outfit.

Yeah, I'm not sure if episode 5 is the best or worst episode of the show... it was a little boring, but so odd that I have to give it at least some respect.
It's an entire episode centered around the teacher's delusions of romance, and the main characters barely even show... how strange. And, yes, probably ridiculous and outrageous too. :)

They play that cliche very straight in this show. There's more of it to come. :) And it's stupid, but it's so obviously intentional that it comes across as silly more than anything else.

Hm, don´t know. Not a fan of all-female casts. The main reason why I´m not interested in K-On.

Toradora maybe? I wouldn't call it slice-of-life but then again you did mention Clannad soooo

PenguinDrum 8

No Survival Strategy and this episode was still great. At the rate this series is going Ringo is going to be the envy of every crazy person in the world.
Drugging someone and then raping them is bad, kids.

And I have a feeling it won't be long now before Shoma and Ringo realize their destiny

Hearing Himari's voice in the preview the next episode, will we finally get an episode with some focus on her character, finally!?

Maybe it's her turn to
See Shouma rise from the dead, and yell "SURVIVAL STRATEGY!" How great would it be if the penguin hat revived another Takakura family member?

Bleach Hell Verse

If someone told you that this movie is somehow awesome and you don't need to know anything about Bleach to enjoy it, and that it has awesome animation and is really enjoyable like REDLINE, that someone is lying. It is in fact a completely average shounen fight movie, which is what you can expect from any average Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece movie. There's nothing uniquely special about the art direction, the story, or the animation. There are some nice pieces of animation here and there, it's true, but the same can be said of any average shounen fight movie. There are always good fight animation scenes. The actual fights themselves are mostly boring and poorly directed, and the bulk of the good animation comes from the effects of explosions and things breaking up. For non-Bleach fans, the story and characters are confusing and nonsensical. The show uses a ton of characters, without giving any context or development. The movie is also filled with CG in the backgrounds, bad monster designs with a severe lack of detail, and campy music.

5/10 - Would not recommend.

REDLINE was poorly directed animation fapfest, with a nonsensical narrative, and characters so thin they might as well be toilet paper. Also, I'd suggest that you actually read over what I wrote up again--rather than get hyped over keywords.

And that, my animubros, is a very good thing. A definite sleeper hit for the sakugawhores.

I think you misunderstand the term "sleeper hit". It refers to something that people didn't expect to be exciting or worthwhile, but turned out to be. A show that simply puts people to sleep by hitting them on the head is not a sleeper hit, it's a bad movie.
