Mawaru Penguindrum Episode 4

I lost it during the day dreams and when the penguin was trying to eat as much as the lunchbox as it could while the crows were eating it. With my monocle equipped I can see the fabulousness.

No. That's exactly what I meant when I said it was consistent in its animation--even awesome at times--and great in direction. I do agree in saying that I may have been wrong about the needing of context, even though I don't think I was, but different strokes for different folks in that regard, i guess.

Blood-C 8

This censorship is awful. Even ignoring the fact it's a giant white line, it friggin spoils stuff that will happen within the next few seconds. Complete bullshit.

Anyway,
Saya really isn't good at this protecting thing. She had several opportunities to jump in, but no, she had to wait for a few of her friends to be massacred and make a small declaration of friend protection before doing anything. It also looks like more people will die in the next episode, so that "I won't let anyone else die" is still meaningless.

Plot-wise, the situation of the town is starting to remind me of Shiki, though it's hard to tell which one has the stupider residents. This one might have an excuse as
it's implied quite a few people are in on the whole thing.

Still enjoying the show though. Probably my show of the season for the shock factor and effective wham episodes alone. Kind of like a mix between Elfen Lied and Shiki. If it wasn't for the damn censorship, it would be awesome.

Mirai Nikki

From the director of Shuffle and the writer of Boku no Pico. Looks like it'll run for two cours, and it's probably going to be shit. Main draw of the manga was that the girl was YAN YAN YANDERE, so I guess it'll have that going for it.

-Yukiteru always rejected any offers to go with friends and just keeps writing a diary on his cell phone. He has what he believes is an imaginary friend called Deus Ex Machina. However, one day Deus asks him to play a survival game along with eleven others. The winner becomes the next Deus Ex Machina. In order to win, the contestants must use their diaries of the future to eliminate one another. For Yukiteru to survive, he must team up with another diary holder, a girl named Yuno.

Mayo Chiki Episode 7

I know I'm late in watching this, but I just had to ask this question.

Who changed Bakachiki's clothes? Those weren't the clothes that he had on when he was drugged. Someone had to have seen him naked. So who was it?

Speaking of Mirai Nikki, can someone remind me how much the OVA covered, and what the general reception to it was?

An example of a sleeper hit is Simoun, for anyone who's following along with me. I don't even know if anybody, even i-d, is following at this point. I'm probably talking about this to nobody. Well, I'm enjoying myself, I haven't watched this show since 2007 or thereabouts.

Simoun 5:

And now, a little bit about Dominura. She is a Sibylla from Chor Dextra, of which she is the sole survivor. She's like Dominura Shepard, if you chose Sole Survivor as your Shepard's origin story. She joins Chor Tempest for reasons which are explained later on, and she is here primarily because of her interest in Limone. They form the relationship which has the widest age-disparity, as it's implied (but not confirmed) that Dominura is the oldest of the group, and it is also known the Limone is by far the youngest. Dominura has the spiral hair so that way you know how critically important the overall story arc she is.

I want to comment briefly on the auriga and sagitta relationship a bit more. Usually, the back seat pilot of the mecha has a reasonably decent number of things to do. The person in the back handles all of the tasks that the person in the front seat shouldn't have to worry about so the person in front can focus on flying the mecha and also fighting. So the back seat person changes weapons, manages shields and energy, navigates, handles communications tasks, monitors the situation around them, and that sort of thing.

Well, in Simoun, the Simouns don't have weapons of any kind besides the Ri Maajons. There aren't any shields, or weapons, or pretty much anything else. So the back seat person, for lack of a better explanation, doesn't hardly do shit. Both the front and back seat pilots need to work together to pilot the Simoun, but realistically the Sibylla in the front seat does most of the work. The Sibylla in the back seat has enough influence that if she's not up to the task, the whole thing gets fucked up (as seen in episode 4 when Morinas tries to fly sagitta). But we also see here in episode 5 that if the person in the front seat really knows what she is doing, the person in the back seat can practically just sit there and enjoy the view.

So the purpose of having 2 characters in each Simoun is much more oriented towards the other, usually more important purpose of giving mechas two seats, and that is of course the relationships between the pilot and co-pilot. To be as blunt as possible about it, those mechas are given two seats so characters know who they're supposed to be fucking when they're not flying. Well, unless you're Code Geass, in which case hurrdurr. During the course of the show, you'll see several characters change seats as it goes along. Most notable of these is
Neviril
but in this episode we see that Limone, who usually flies sagitta, is moved by Dominura into the auriga's seat.

The pairs are usually romantically involved when not flying, as you'd expect. Because of this, you would expect and you would be correct that the auriga and the sagitta are roughly correlated to the seme and the uke in anime relationship terms. As you watch the series, pay attention to who flies auriga and who flies sagitta, and their personality types, and you'll see why some of the Sibyllas in Chor Tempest earn the right to be on top the aurigas and why some are better suited to being on the bottom the sagittas.

Episode Summary:

Dominura arrives from Chor Dextra, on special assignment. Anubituf and Guragief hope she can help right the sinking ship that is Chor Tempest while Neviril is absent due to being sad.

Dominura immediately takes an interest in Limone, who is having trouble adjusting to flying sagitta to Aaeru's auriga. See Morinas for further information, from the previous episode. During a sortie, the Aaeru/Limone pair fail to complete a Ri Maajon and it's up to a pair of Morinas (flying auriga now) and Floe to clean shit up after.

Dominura decides to take Limone out but experimentally puts her back in the auriga's seat, the position she flew in during cadet training. They head out with Alty/Floe for a routine reconnaissance mission to the northern border between Simulacrum and the Plumbum Highlands because of reports of a military buildup along that border.

The two Simouns fly north and run into a blizzard, and also a large Plumbum invasion force. It seems that Plumbum is preparing to invade while Simulacrum is busy with Argentum's armadas, opening a war on two fronts for the Holy Land.

Alty and Floe attempt to strike and evade while Limone has some problems flying auriga. It is shown that she had a Top Gun moment back in cadet school which resulted in the death of a fellow cadet, and that is why she refuses to fly auriga anymore even though it is her natural position.

Aaeru and Rodoreamon show up during this battle to search for the other two pairs, and end up serving as reinforcement. Limone sees Aaeru and snaps out of her funk, she finally decides that she is tired of doing what people tell her to and realizes that she has to let go of the tragedy in her past if she wants to do what she has always wanted to, which is make perfect Ri Maajons.

Limone and Aaeru complete the Silver Ri Maajon, a very difficult maneuver even in clear skies, through a raging blizzard and destroy the entire Plumbum invasion force. They return to the Arcus Prima with Dominura now certain that she made the right decision by putting Limone back in the auriga's seat.

REDLINE was poorly directed animation fapfest, with a nonsensical narrative, and characters so thin they might as well be toilet paper. Also, I'd suggest that you actually read over what I wrote up again--rather than get hyped over keywords.
Lol, I think you either misunderstood what poor direction and non-characters are, or your hyperbole is dragging you straight towards nonsense town.

Penguins 8

The show is ok, I suppose. It's no Clamp-B, for sure, but it trudges along as best it can.

One thing I'll give it is that Ringo is perfect waifu material.

Nonsensical narrative indeed, but it is certainly not poorly directed.

It's kind of hilarious.

Blood-C 8

Why is the writing in this show trying so hard to troll me?

There's not even any reason for the writing and direction to be so bad, it would be quite easy to have people die despite Saya doing her best to prevent it, but instead she continually just stands around like a retard doing nothing while people die. This was the worst episode yet in that regard, I guess she just didn't like those classmates.

Blood-C 8 redux

In no universe where you see a giant crab monster running towards you, is the natural reaction for everyone to just stand around nonchalantly until it starts killing people.

It was terrible because it wasn't an OVA so much as a long advertisement.

Maken-Ki

Fanservice-filled harem action anime featuring a spineless, wimpy lead being crushed by all the ass he can’t handle. Tits and pantyshots galore. Feels kinda like Freezing from a few years back, except that it’s not written by Im Dal Young so the chances of women being abused by men for no fucking reason at all goes down significantly.
It's going to be shit.

-Takeru Ohyama, a young normal yet perverted minded guy, got accepted and now goes to a school that, unknown to him, was where combat and magic is used. On the first day, he meets again after three years: Haruko Amaya, his childhood friend, Inaho Kushiya, a girl who says she's his fiance, and Kodama Himegami, a blonde who wants to kill him. Finding out that there are many girls there that just don't like him, he is told that everyone there uses a special magic ability while using an item or weapon called a Maken. Later, he finds that no Maken is acceptable for him and doesn't know what to do, since in this school the students get into duels that showcase their magic and combat power, to which he seemingly has none.

I don't think so, but fill me in on your definition.
Okay, so, I've never really rattled off a definition of what makes something well directed, but it should be pretty clear.

Direction

Like, the director usually wants to tell some story through the visuals and, while doing so, convey some specific emotions/mood/feeling in the audience e.g. tension, excitement and so forth. There's usually some creativity in terms of camera work and framing, however, you can have some very 'traditional' direction that's also excellent. When all the visual work comes together to achieve these goals you have good direction, of course how you go about that is very complicated.

What makes the direction in a particular movie bad is another question. I can't really call bland, unimaginative, safe direction actually awful because hey, it works in the most basic sense that the movie can be viewed and you will know what is going on. It sure would be very lazy and uninspired though, and you get plenty of that in anime. Lots of basic work.

Bad would have to be something else, like if the framing was off and you couldn't actually see the character or event, or if the camera-work was a mess, or if the editing was a complete shambles.

Now, I do think Redline has some issues at some points in the movie overall it's pretty good. Even excellent, at times. Of course, a movie could still be well directed but bad, this is quite common in Hollywood at least.

Characters

Characters generally need to fit in with the kind of work that they're placed in. What is Redline? It's an action movie - so at the very least you need some semblance of character from the major players, but nothing very complicated, because of the genre we're dealing with. Redline goes down an interesting route by having a large cast made up of really exaggerated caricatures - this is a really good move when combines with the movies outstanding character designs because everyone's pretty larger than life.

Sweet JP, his mechanic, his friend, etc all those guys even have a bit of backstory fleshing them out a bit further, but not too far, because it's not essential to the movie. As for the other racers, the movie uses a fairly neat device to give them their own brief moment to shine. Which is one of the best ways to do it in a movie of this type.

Gintama 153

Oh god, that is EXACTLY what I'm like while trying to sleep. Fuckin brain won't shut off. Always contemplating the meaning of the universe or something. The way Gin acted at the end was pretty much exactly how I was after seeing Paranormal Activity for the first time.

And that dog story on the radio was sad as hell... until the end :lol

Simoun 6:

One overriding theme of this show, besides girls kissing a lot and coming of age, is unrequited love. On the whole, unrequited love is usually of the immature crushy sort when you're a teenager, and these girls are all teenagers and they might as well be in high school instead of on board a flying cruise liner converted into an aircraft carrier. Except, you know, they are at war.

There is a lot of very good character development in this episode.

Episode Summary:

Neviril is holed up in her stateroom, and presumably has been for most of the duration of the past few episodes. Aaeru comes by frequently and pounds on her door and tries to talk her out of her depression. Neviril mostly ignores her.

Neviril and Paraietta have a talk and Neviril rebuffs her for what is presumably the 185,266th time. Paraietta leaves and hangs out with Kaimu, who has a pretty hard crush on her. Kaimu tries her best to get Paraietta to return her feelings, but Paraietta is busy thinking about how Kaimu and she have roughly the same problematic relationship that she and Neviril have. She comes up with a plan and leaves a disappointed Kaimu behind to solve some problems. Unbeknownst to Paraietta and Kaimu, but knownst to the viewers, Alty has been quietly observing this entire sequence of scenes.

Paraietta challenges Aaeru to a duel in the Maaju pool, and there she decides that it is time for her to "give" Neviril to Aaeru as her pair. She realizes this means she will be forever giving up on being with Neviril and that it was never meant to be even though they have been childhood friends since they were very young.

Deep Thoughts from Floe: "It's okay if a bird is just resting it's wings. But if it's too badly injured to fly again...it won't be able to go on living."
