Not making a real comparison with a modified 'Grp. A8' WRC, but just wanted to chime this in:

WRC 1998 Season Finale - Laugh of Fate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=liBLqmeHht8#t=125s

Agreed, lovely recommendation! The cool liberalness of the setting and the personalities of the roommates attracts you at first sight, but later the sarcastic and layered (sometimes a bit mysterious) nature of the characters makes it so interesting after the initial impression.

After seeing Kimagure Orange Road, at the time I searched for this work because I thought the character designer for it was Akemi Takada (several years ago, in the mid-90s, I didn't knew much about Japanese animation creators so I assumed things based on similar look) and didn't have access to the Internet to check up on project's staff and such. She was who at first made me interested on this work. Later I knew that she didn't participate on this.

Obviously I don't regret such mistake, and I wonder if sometimes this isn't the best way of discovering new things!

I was referring to the newer Corollas, not the semi-awesome 90s ones. The new ones are devoid of all soul and are just transportation. the older ones were legitimately fun to drive and looked ok.

And glad to see more fans of Here is Greenwood!

I've come to the realization that I would probably watch literally anything that Kyoani makes.

Same here. It just seems to happen. They hit just the right notes for me.

Woah! Have I traveled back in time!
Better get outta here!

Oh damn.

God, Akarin is so adorable.

From the New World:

And that's about all the stuff I'm interested in from Animate's free mag. You guys can get the rest yourself. :)

I really like the clothing design. Its suitably different with the bow placement and some small details from the usual.

Read Or Die OVA 1

Yet another old OVA series that I've finally gotten around to watching. As you can see, the art is really good, and it has some spectacular animation.

Unfortunately, it's not without it's drawbacks. The entire premise of the show is inherently ridiculous, but it tries to play it a little too straight, which ruins any fun moments the ridiculousness might have otherwise made. Yomiko, the main character, is incredibly annoying and if it wasn't for the side characters and action there is no way I would be able to finish this.

Like many anime from that time period, it uses an overly muted color palette that really only detracts from the otherwise excellent art. Everything is drawn from greys and browns, and even in the rare moments when a colour other than dull and dark shows up, it's still heavily muted so that it might as well just be another shade of brown.

As it is, ROD seems to fall into that category of anime where the only reason to watch it is for the good animation. OVA's can barely get a pass in that regard, since they're usually only a handful of episodes long, but if this was a TV series I would have to pass on it.

Sorry envelope-kun but I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. This is one of my favorite OVA's. Especially because of Yomiko and her absolutely infectious personality. The english VA did a STELLAR job of portraying her.

She's crazy. No super powers or anything.

I kind of like this twist. It gives the whole thing a bit of a Satoshi Kon/dreaming in reality vibe. Its even more interesting to me that way.

Because a supernatural battle anime with high schoolers is something different?

Lol. Its kind of insane that something that outlandish is seen as a cliche idea, but in anime it has been done so many times.

Do studios ever release budget numbers? I've heard of a few cases but by-and-large it seems like the gaming industry where nobody says jackshit.

they are wise not to. Remember Tezuka hid the true cost of production from the world as part of gaining anime's acceptance. People do not know how much studios are probably losing and its best they dont.

It should be criminal that a show as fun as Tari Tari is only 13 episodes while we are to suffer through 26 episodes of Sengoku Collection. Some things are a vast injustice.

Hey man, if Sengoku Collection weren't 26 episodes we never would have gotten episode 23, which is the greatest thing aired on TV since the Yankees winning the World Series.

Sengoku Collection needs all 26 episodes so that they have enough time to extract the good episodes from the amorphous mass of bad episodes. They couldn't just make 13 good episodes.

While I wasn't able to pick up Newtype today, a Chinese site has posted full scans of the Psycho-Pass pages from Newtype. The interview between Koji Yamamoto (FujiTV) and Takeshi Wada (Production IG) is pretty interesting.

- The idea originally came up because Sony was remaking Spiderman. Yamamoto felt that Production IG also had strong properties which have been dormant for some time - Ghost in the Shell, and Patlabor. But instead of remaking them, he thought it would be good if they made something brand new in that same direction instead. The concept being "a cop series".

- The project started coming together about 2 years ago. They decided who would be the producers and the chief director pretty early. It seems the chief director (we know its Motohiro now) was definitely something FujiTV wanted.

- What Yamamoto wanted for the show was something like Inception, but done in an anime form which can show off the Japanese animation industry's ability to also create major scifi works like that. Inception is very popular, Ghost in the Shell is very popular, people overseas respect these works, etc. You get the picture.

- Yamamoto was also the one who had the idea to get Amano involved in the character designs. The reason for this is because he feels that her artwork has a more adult taste in them, and she's also popular with both male and female demographics, so it would be a more gender neutral style which can appeal to older audiences as well.

- The story and science-fiction world setting is something which the chief producer and the script writer (Urobuchi!!) planned out together. Some of the details and ideas evolved along with Amano's designs however. It seems that both the Dominator gun and the wrist bracelet computer they use to calculate Psycho-Pass measurements are things which developed from Amano's preference for gadget designs.

Also, some other details I posted on Animesuki:

Those are scans from Newtype talking about the Dominator gun and the various character profiles. Like I previously mentioned, the gun detects the criminality of a subject, and arms itself accordingly. In this article it is explained that the different offensive modes the system can change to are: Paralyser, Eliminator (lethal ammo), and Disintegrator.

There are also more details about the characters, which seems pretty interesting. Shinya himself, even though he is an enforcement officer, has a high level of criminality potential as measured by the system they use. It seems his past is also tied to an unsolved bizarre murder case.

The other character profiles are mostly general traits and personalities. Akane is a fresh grad who enters the force as an executive officer because of her high aptitude scores. Nojima's character is the other senior executive officer on the team, and he is described as a brilliant officer who keeps his emotions to himself, and is especially hard on Akane.

Ishida's character is a loud mouth who likes making fun of people, and he spends all his spare time playing portable videogames. The old guy is a veteran on the force who's like a father figure, and he's the one who helps induct Akane into their field work. The ponytail girl is a cool sort of character who like reading books, and she's also the specialist who controls the robot drones for the team. The scientist chick is the sexy and glamorous sort of woman, and she's in-charge of the medical well being of the team, as well as analyzing the criminality data of offenders.

Disintegrator sounds like overkill. I guess that's the mode when you want to eliminate all the evidence, lol.

That was actually my first thought. It sounds more like something which will be used as a plot point where you "erase" the person, rather than just wounding or killing.

International appeal fuck yeah.

That all sounds far, far too good to be true. Now all I can expect is an ugly CG mess :(
the second and last pictures are novel covers.

That would make more sense.

I watched the first episode of SP last night; it's really good (admittedly that should be clarified with "for a Jdrama") but I can definitely see why Motohiro is well regarded in the industry. The tone is a good mix of dry humour and serious drama and the action sequences are well directed. He's a good choice for something like this.

Amano's designs are very "on brand" for noitaminA. Akane is the only character whose design hasn't really transferred well into the anime IMO - her eyes are too damn big!
