Goofy as hell as always and I'd forgotten the cast was so large. Still, it earned a place on Firehawk's top 5 harem deconstructions for a reason.

Infinite Stratos 2: World Purge
Adaptation-wise this was kinda bad for anyone that hasn't read the book it's from as all you get to see throughout is the what with very little of the why. Whatever though, look at Ichika go!!

Kancolle 5
Aside from the genuine moment when the torpedo squard girls spent that last night together, this was really meh. At least Kongou and the OST makes it worth sitting through.

Sora no Woto 5
Seeing the sunset on the edge of the world after the excursion into idyllic wilderness was really powerful, snapping the viewer back to the harsh reality that's so far been on the periphery of the show. Made a fitting bookend that started with the tank crew training exercise.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark

I figured all the Star Trek comparisons would just be specious comments but they were pretty dead-on in a good way. The movie hit all the right notes and made me really, really wistful for the series, particularly the mid-ending credit scene. Opening credits were more exciting than everything else that has aired this year. Combined.

It seems the writer Maeda Jun warned people that the first 6 episodes of Charlotte would be boring. So take that as you will.

So first 6 episodes: Cute little slice-of-life series.

Next 6 episodes: OH NO SOMEBODY GOT HIT BY A BUS.

Last episode: Boy, I'm sure glad that was all a dream!

You guys thought the lewd was the danger of Summer, but it was always Jun Maeda.

Not really, Smut will be the underlying danger of Summer especially when you have shit like Monster Monsume and Bikini Girls. Then you finally have Prison School which is a dangerous beast that will destroy AnimeGaf with ass and tits surrounded by horny teenagers.

It's almost never a dream though! Your playing a dangerous game NMan. So much for the neutral party. You ain't no Switzerland!

I'm really excited about God Eater and Gatchaman Crowds 2. If those are good, the summer season will be alright in my book.

And that's all nothing before the terror of Maeda.

Not to burst your bubble but God Eater is having some production schedule issues. Which is why they delayed the first episode so you won't be seeing that show for a while.

At least there is Ushio no Tora, Rokka, and Non Non Biyori which may turn out great.

Do we have any idea when this is supposed to land ?

Curse you, Angra Mainyu, for making me anticipate this.
Considering ufo has God Eater now (whose production seems to be a clusterfuck already) and then that Tales anime later, I don't think they're gonna start production any sooner than 2016. The lack of new footage/screenshot from the PV shown at the end of UBW and the article on the new TM Ace issue seems to reinforce this.

And I think it's mentioned somewhere in that new issue that it'd be "a couple years" before we get the film, but dunno if it was translated correctly.

Eh, there's still Gachaman. If ufotable needs more time to deliver good work, that's fine.

I also totally forgot Heaven's Feel is coming from them as well. Really interested to see how they pull that off as a movie. I assume they can cut a lot of the early setup since the anime touches on most of that. Heaven's Feel is probably the strangest FSN arc, so I'm interested to see how it turns out. Also, never not going to be excited for ufotable Tales.

Game of Laplace 01

Another great "Off-Beat" series this season, along with Gangsta. This one is more murder mystery with shades of Death Note. Lots of suspense and even a cliffhanger that didn't piss me off! Also a contender with Gangsta for best OP of the season.

That teacher though
she's definitely the killer aint she? Anyone in Japan who acts like that past the age of 25 is certainly not on the up and up

I don't blame people who like dubs. Reading and paying attention to the animation simultaneously can be a hard skill to pick up. I'm just surprised the dub market hasn't contracted super heavily now that the western broadcast market for them is super slim. The SimulDub strategy actually might be a really smart way to pick up more casual anime fans broadcast has left behind.
There's definitely a market, and it makes sense to convert the weird Toonami people who may be tired of watching anime at 3am nowadays.

Yeah, be more careful with what you license isn't a bad idea. Of course that follows, however, that at some point, one or many of your favorite shows straight up won't get picked up since popularity and quality aren't always correlated.
Well, before fansub groups would pick up the gaps. I mean, K-On wasn't licensed and only gained popularity through fansubs after all.

On a case to case basis, sure. As a general trend, no I don't think that's true at in the modern day. Strong dubs have infact improved my opinion of some shows or at least made them watchable/rewatchable in a way they wouldn't be subbed. I'm going to assume Borgen is a live action series/movie/whatever? If so, I don't think live action and animation are comparable in terms of dubbing and the difficulties/issues that can arise.

This is likely to just be a "agree to disagree" issue though and and I'm with that if it is.
The only dub I've enjoyed so far is the Infinite Stratos one, because it's so purpsefully terrible. lol
But yeah, this is going to be something where it's purely subjective. I just find dubbing to be generally poor because of the process where every actor reads their lines independently and in a vacuum. That and having to fit the mouth movements of a completely different language doesn't help either.

Yeah. Pretty much my stance. Hearing characters with voices that are obviously not theirs (like Japanese characters in Japan sounding all american) totally breaks the media illusion for me. Doesn't matter if its live action or animation.

I'm equally bothered by US/UK characters in anime that are voiced by non english native speakers. Or at least by those who cannot do a believable US or other accent. Surely there's westerners in Japan who would jump at the chance to do what amounts to bit parts most of the time.
I still wish they could find English speaking actors. Then again, we wouldn't have gotten Karen on Kinmoza. lol

Jesus this really is Firehawk Friday. lol
Why are you even watching DogScissors?

I think the best part of the IS OVA is that eunuch Ichika is literally fighting her own sexual desires. :p

Dog and scissors is only good for the masochist editor.

infinite Stratos is shit too but it has the holy trinity of Charles, Tatenashi, Laura so we cool.

So has there been a food porn show in anime that didn't seek to keep attention from otaku by having ecchi?

Ben-to was the other one I can think of. And I'm not even gonna mention the one about the two girls that aired like a season or 2 ago where they made orgasm faces.

I tell you guys all the time to watch Yakitate Japan!

Little Witch Academia - The Enchanted Parade (For real this time)

Yay, that was pretty good! I like how both LWA entries so far are pretty much stand alone pieces which just tell different stories with the same characters. It doesn't try to be epic or complex, just filled with heart and cuteness, with nice action and effects when needed. The extra runtime in this one allowed them to build up to a bigger climax, but on a whole it still retains the tone and charm the original had. I don't really care for the teen drama and angst in the story, but in the end it didn't really hurt much. I think there could have been more dancing though. :p

Looking forward to getting my BD package whenever they finally ship them out! :)

There is something special about watching anime on broadcast TV. I can't explain it, but it's there. I still enjoy it even if it's dubs of shows that are mostly bad or i've already watched.

Very true, which really makes me hope for some kind of conclusion be it via OVA or a movie because if they deal with this as well as they have these past 2 seasons story wise, this ending could potentially be one of the greatest things ever. I'll try my best to be strong and not read the LNs.
It has to happen eventually, right? :(

Yeah HF is so different from the rest of the routes so I'll be interested in their take on it. It'll probably be released by 2016 and then the long wait for good subs will commence.

I was very surprised reading it for the first time. It's so much more violent and almost horror themed. I hope the film goes all the way with those aspects.

Then there are the really awkward and semi-horrifying hentai parts that I have no clue how they're going to get around but the story will probably still be better without them.

Watch JoJo if you want true manly tears.

Inb4 I don't really hate Key anime but I'm not a big fan.

Antique Bakery and Ristorante Paradiso, I suppose. But they're aiming for the female audience.

Sentai is weird because, at least based on people here anyway, I think less people use The Anime Network than they do Daisuki.

We already had Viz's anime "streaming" site die though. So perhaps the bubble has already popped and we're just at the downward spiral.

the main problem is that anime really doesnt make a lot of money. The margins for licensing companies are tiny and the product is too easy to find for free (not legally of course)
Some people think im crazy paying for those CE's but I love anime to death and will spend whats necessary on my part to help it stay afloat.

Little Witch Academia - The Enchanted Parade

Incomplete and unfinished. Terrible troll for backers. Trigger sucks. Etc.

T_T

Just gonna wait till I get home lol

I'm with you. Key aren't the best at what they do but man have they made me cry way more than any other VN/anime out there. All we need is a Rewrite anime and I'll be happy.

When Marnie Was There

Anyway, I don't know if I have much to save about this film as I did with last year's Ghibli films because it's so much more low key than them. My first thoughts were that it was a film that combined the nostalgic aspects of Only Yesterday with the self-discovery/dealing with depression aspects of Letter to Momo or Mai Mai Miracle. I guess that's just a long way of saying that it is a nice examination of the self-esteem issues that a girl who feels isolated might have to deal with in her day to day life. Being an orphan, having asthma, and just being shy in general, are all factors that drive a wedge between the main character Anna and the rest of the characters in the film.

There isn't any magical solution presented here, even if it is presented through the lens of magical realism. Anna learns, through some manifestation of her subconscious, her place in the world and begins to both open up and heal - both psychologically and physically - as the shy sickly girl at the beginning of the film grows in the vibrant and happy girl we see at the end. I'll leave the "how" of that evolution for you to discover yourself, but it's a mostly satisfying journey.

Perhaps my only criticism is the ending of the film, where all is revealed in a clunky Up style exposition dump that explain everything in seemingly excruciating detail. But that said, it pays off in a final revelation at the end that literally sent chills down my spine and gave me goosebumps. I'm not sure if there would have been another way to script that revelation so that it happens more organically - much like the end of From Up On Poppy Hill, the entire film almost hinges on that discovery, so trying to allude to it earlier on might ruin the climax... but I just feel like there must be a better solution than what they had here.

All that said, it's still a strong effort and definitely a worthy follow up to Yonebayashi's Arrietty. For a company whose film library is praised for its interesting and strong female lead characters, Marnie is a great way to send off the Ghibli brand. If Miyazaki and Takahata produced films that highlighted the end of careers and the passage of time, then Yonebayashi produced a film that highlights the changing nature of life and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. It's a very hopeful way to end the legacy of possibly the greatest animation studios and to assuage the concerns one might have about the future of 2D animation.

*watches finale of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 2*

What was that all about???
Yui tricked them on a date in in order to confess her feelings and force Yuki to as well. Hachi stops her since it won't be genuine and they all agree to solve Yuki's family problems before continuing their problem as a group.

Yeah, I think Attack on Titan was really the first one to be on both sites simultaneously.
Also AnimeSols died I supposed, but that doesn't count as part of the bubble since it was probably never going to work anyway. lol

Ultimately I'm not sure what strategy will work. I think most anime fans don't care about drama, so CR chasing jdrama licenses probably doesn't help them. And for whatever reason, people love anime dubs, but Funi seems to be more interested in burning money now. Especially since they basically gave up distribution of discs and are essentially out of that game.

Cause people understand English, silly weeby.
also some dubs are just AWESOME. either bad or good.

I can't wait until Part 4 comes and the true king of Shonen Action shoes can rise and take his rightful throne.

Man do I want to see
Kira
animated so bad. He's one of the best Villain in Shonen. Dio doesn't even compare to him. Plus his
Stand Killer Queen
is fabulous.
