This game looks nice, but I am concerned about the focus on multiplayer, and about how it controls. I did not care for the 8-way controls in 3D Land.
That's a great looking shot and the difference between Galaxy and 3D World's artstyle in a nutshell. I haven't seen anything with that kind of beauty from the 3D World footage.

Well, Super Mario Galaxy's demo wasn't a graphical marvel either but I'm sure you know that already![]()
Sure, but that's because it needed all of the power of the two gamecubes to render it. The Wii U should be able to turn it into a level.Peach's Castle in Galaxy was the definition of feeling like a level rather than a world. It was a straight corridor and there was no platforming. It was certainly beautiful but left a lot to be desired. Made me want 64 pt 2.
And sling stars were pointless, they were just glorified loading screens.
We played 4 levels and none of them wowed me in the same way as when Mario first flew through space in Galaxy and landed on a planetoid, or ran through the opening city with Peach's castle lit up in the background.
SM3DW feels like levels, Galaxy felt like a world.
And you know it, all of SMG are like the mushroom went through a blender to make the levels.
I think the new game looks much better technically. And this is a dolphin screen. The real galaxy had tons of jaggies. This is the mushroom kingdom
To be fair, not all of SMG look like that either...
As before with the Wii you'll see the difference when you'll play it, it's definitely better than SM3DL so far.
Most of Galaxy didn't look like that though. Not to mention that was the only part of Galaxy that was a cohesive world and not a floating platform.
I know not everything looks like that, I just returned to Galaxy 2 to collect all the green stars so my memory is fresh, but it's the kind of artistry that they have the power to do more of in 3D World that would catch eyes and put an end to talk of the game looking "bland." All I've seen so far from 3D World is typical Mario styling with a bit of SM2 and SMW thrown in, and it's all still in that 3D render super clean, boring lighting art style.
Wha?Is that because the bosses in 3DL are some of the worst abomination subjected to people in Mario games since Mario Sunshine?

I do like this screen, but the new game looks much better in everything. Maybe the nighttime and water wows you.
Wha?
Do you mean the Bowser platforming encounters (resembling the original SMB) or Boom Boom and Pom Pom?Well the bosses in 3DL are beyond crap, the last boss is awesome though.

Am I the only one who loved the hell out of 3D Land? :|
I think it's one of the best games I've played in the past few years...so, no.
Still, this isn't inspired at all. As much as I absolutely adore 3D Land, this looks like it's taking one too many pages from that book.
Publishers. Not for much longer, I hope.People still care about Metacritic?

A lot more than you'd wish for.

Yeah, it's ironic that Mario Kart has more Mushroom Kingdom in it than the Mario platformer games.
I guess EAD just has this sense that you can't make a good Mario level unless it's an abstract series of colorful blocks and grass platforms floating in oblivion.
The larger problem Nintendo has is that almost a year in they have no game that scores 90+ for the Wii U, and as long as there's no third party input and Nintendo makes 'me too' games, iterations of existing ones, they won't get any, and they haven't announced any that will. 3D World might, although I'm not holding my breath, it simply looks too decent and similar to 3D Land. That means that the Wii U won't have a critical darling until the end of 2014 at the earliest, at which point the console will be well and truly dead. That's why people were hoping for something magical like Galaxy 1. Or Wonderful 101 proves to be a curveball, but I think it will be too divisive.
Will probably be great, as usual with Mario games...
..and one of the last games for the Wii U, if it´s not cancelled totally
That guy you quoted... he nailed it all down.
*claps*
excellent post!
The Director and Producer have been consistent for the last 3 games, including this one, and both also worked on Mario Galaxy 1, too in important roles (Lead Level Design and Director respectively). If a new Galaxy-style game is currently in development, it would be being worked on by people who have not touched the series in a while, if ever.
In terms of artdirection i think it looks pretty much perfect. Now hopefully, there will be some amazingly designed assets.Well of course it looks better technically at native 720p with HD assets.

We've got some nice looking footage from the GC showfloor:

I know this is probably the first level, but damn that looks so much slower and less dynamic than any other homeconsole 3D Mario...
I hope the footage that we will get near launch will show much harder stages
Yeah...the girl kept looking for the B button so I dont think they know how to run.Has to do more with the players I think. It seems like they didn't even use the run button.
I'll have another video with more movement in a few minutes.
Why are people even comparing this to the Galaxy games? This is not supposed to replace it, we'll get that game next year.
They're not gonna ditch a series that sells 8M+, we still got NSMB2 after SM3DL and we also got NSMBU/NSLU. They can all coexist.Man that video reminds me, is it just me or do most game journalists REALLY suck at Mario, like more than most video game series? I remember laughing at all the New Super Luigi U videos at E3 where people would die in the first level, or jump right into the first Tower's Fire jets.
What evidence is there for this? This seems almost like something people are pining for next year, to get the "bad taste" of this game out of their mouth. I'm totally satisfied with this game's direction though, I thought Super Mario 3D Land was a great concept, but rather undercoocked. hopefully 3D World is the game this concept deserves!

I bet the next two main Mario platformers will be both 3D like the Galaxy games for both the 3DS and Wii U.
This is a joke, right?
I wouldn't mind Mario taking a break for a while. In the past two years, we'll have had 3D Land, 3D World, NSMBU, NSMB2, NSLU. They need to let the series breathe or it won't be special anymore - no one gave a shit about NSMBU because NSMB2 came out like three months before it.or it can just be this mario, for several years before they even start working on a new one, it could come out on the wiiU, or it could come out on the next console
