Surface Pro Gaming.

I really really really want a SP4 badly

I get the feeling there's one on the way. Some of the dedicated hardware Windows 10 features like Hello aren't supported on the current SP, and it's a bit daft for their own tablet not to support a headline feature.

Installed windows 10 on my surface and most things are ok. One thing I have spotted is that you can't seem to turn off needing a password when waking from sleep. Even if you set requiring a password in netplwiz and changing the option in power. Anyone else have this?

Surface Pro gaming GAF, holla! I got mine yesterday. Spent much of last night getting it up on Windows 10.

So, I tried Steam streaming and was actually blown away. Civ 5 ran perfect. I immediately started downloading Skyrim and New Vegas to my gaming PC.

Question - I need some touch-friendly Steam games besides FTL and Civ 5. Thoughts?

There's not really a lot lol. I do most of my gaming on it by setting the system on a table and playing controller friendly games with a 360 pad.

Yeah, loving it so far. Some games seem to scream for controller integration.

BTW Steam streaming with Skyrim results in very low volume. Anyone else have this issue?

There's crazy few, Out There works, it's like a simpler FTL with much more resource management, no real combat, not realtime. IIRC peggle works well enough. Recommend a controller, though it seems like Win 10 is sitll screwy with dualshock 4s so I haven't messed with that since the upgrade.

Same here. I was always interested in a Surface Pro, but now with streaming, I really can't wait for the Surface Pro 4 reveal.

That said they sure make many difference types of devices, with different storage and CPU. Not sure what I'd be going for, a little confusing. (Assuming they approach it the same way they did the SP3).

I think the rumors are that there's going to be a larger 14'' device to compete with a possibly larger iPad. There's also the chance that I'd just grab an Surface Pro 3 once the prices come down even farther on those. What are the biggest issues people have with that version? I've seen some in here talk about heat and battery life.

The heat and fan are the only "major" issues, and they're kind of exaggerated, though they do mean gaming performance isn't extremely high. Though a fanless design would mean drastically worse performance. It's just a natural trade-off, my only real complaint there is I wish it didn't trigger the fan's low/medium setting when I'm watching streaming video.

Battery life is fine IMO. It's high end laptop mid end tablet battery life. Not sure what people are expecting, considering the display and oomph it has it's quite fine.

There's really no "flaws" IMO so much as trade-offs and a device like this will always have them.

I can't see a 14" version working as well. This is the size of a legal pad for a reason, it's pretty much right as the size boundary to be holdable with one hand.

For gaming? I have an i5 SP3 and I don't think the heat and throttling issue is exaggerated at all. The thing is amazing for non gaming applications but for gaming it throttles down quick. Can't wait for a fanless SP4.

I think it's pretty exaggerated I can run some fairly intense 3d games (well for a tablet) like Valkyrie Chronicles and Skyrim at more than playable speeds @ 720p.

It's not exaggerated at all. Sp3 is a joke when it comes to throttling. My boss has one and a have a sp2, the 2 runs circles around the 3.

Broken Age is a nice game to play on the SP3. They patched in touch controls for the Windows version once it came out for iPad, and that's how I played Act Two.

Isn't it said that the SP2 is better for games?

I may just get one a before the SP4 releases, just to have something to fuck around with and treat it as more of a tablet while I use my SP4 as my main laptop.

While I am posting in the "Surface Pro Gaming" thread, I didn't really plan on gaming much on the device. I'm just really liking Windows 10 and need something to replace the 3rd gen iPad that I smashed into oblivion a few weeks ago. Comics/ebook/video editing are what I plan on using it for mainly although I would likely stream some xbox to it now that I know that feature works well.

I can't see the mid range SP4 being much better. Looking at benchmarks, the i5 broadwell chips aren't a big increase in performance over haswell, and skylake is likely to be similar. But it is a die shrink, so should generate less heat and be easier to cool for normal workloads which are primarily CPU based.

But the TDP remains the same, so I think the share of TDP is moving towards the GPU which gets another nice boost to broadwell and again to skylake.

So for office/productivity I hope we'll see it run cooler and quieter, and have longer battery life, because the CPU should generate less heat (similar performance, smaller die). But for gaming you'll go straight to that 15w TDP because you're stressing the GPU and you'll throttle again.

Mine hasn't seemed to go into sleep automatically properly. When I manually went start-> sleep it worked but just the regular button and closing lid doesn't seem to do it.

yup i press the sleep button and 60 seconds afters wakes again,i have revised everything but nothing seems to fix the problem

No solution here that I know of. I haven't found much in brief searches online but someone else mentioned they'd heard of the problem in a Win10 thread recently.

MURDERS battery.

i also noticed the damn thing gets hot like hell just looking at webs,i have read about some problems with cpu usage, thats never happened to me with 8.1

I want the SP4 but I'm going to the states early next month. SP4 is really expensive in where I live. Should I just get the SP3? Or should I pay more for a SP4?
I will not get the chance to go to the states anytime soon, probablu next year if anything.

And should I get the i5 or the i7? Using it mostly for low poly 3D modeling, photoshop and unity. I might use it for mudbox/zbrush too.

What should I do?

sp4 is unlikely to be significantly faster than the current SP3. But it should probably be cooler and have better battery life due to the CPU size being shrunk. I'd be tempted to wait, especially as the price is likely to drop on the Sp3 to clear stocks and that would be a better time to choose price Vs performance.

I5 seems the best option according to most commentators.

Yeah the i7 really makes the entire thing too expensive for me. I have some doubts regarding the performance boost it would really give me too, surely other components will be a bottleneck too?

oh my ftl is surface pro touch friendly ? the steam version?

Anyone notice that 3D based games are super dark/look like they have black crush?

Example: I tried Deus Ex and it runs flawless 'cept it's too damn dark. Tried adjusting in-game gamma/brightness and it has absolutely no effect.
2D based stuff like Monkey Island is completely fine tho...

EDIT: Definitely has something to do with Direct3D cause I switched it to OpenGL as the renderer and the gamma levels were completely normal. Problem is, when you run in OpenGL, everything runs waaay to fast, lol

Some relatives going to the US from late October until November 15th. I wonder if that would fit into the release schedule for a possible Surface 4.

How long does it usually take after reveal that they would put these on the market?

I actually had this problem with my first surface coming straight out of the box on windows 8.1. My new one doesn't have it. Maybe it's something to do with the surface itself and not the OS?

I'm experiencing crushed blacks and crushed colors on games. Crushed blacks is fairly consistent, but I'm also experiencing some crushed colors on Morrowind. Anyone else have this going on? Surface Pro 2 i5 8gb model win8.1

I eliminated some of it in Morrowind by lowering the gamma correction, but the game gets too dark.

Looking forward to the hopeful October 6th annoumcement. Expecting Skylake i3, i5, and i7 varieties. Rumors keep talking about 12 and 14 inch models. Wanting the SSD extended to 1 TB so I can afford thr 512 GB. Would like to see the Intel Iris 540 (Skylake) graphics and a 4k resolution display. USB Type-C and Thunderbolt III would be nice.

So guys any predictions for the Pro 4? Assuming it's going to be announced Oct 6.

Kind of exciting what kind of jump we are going to see here especially in the graphics department. Intel's latest Integrated graphics will apparently hit 1teraflop (on desktops) scaled down we could see something pretty powerful if Microsoft announces something running an upcoming chips..

So with what the spec details they announced for the SP4 is there any indication if they have eliminated the need to throttle?

The surface book with the dGPU looks awesome but I'm probably already pushing my budget at the SP4 i5/8gb price.

It's using a hybrid cooling system (liquid cooling) and is 30% faster than the Pro 3 (assuming i7).

Considered the upgraded cooling I would hope they eliminated the throttling but it's still a tablet so who knows I'm sure it will still do it eventually.

Anybody Pre-order the 4? I'm on the fence if this really does solve the throttling problem and also has a 30% boost in raw power it could be worth it.

If it doesn't solve the cooling problem it's not IMO though.

I'm grabbing one as soon as Student Pricing goes live (so probably not pre-ordering). As for cooling, I guess all we can do is wait and see until someone can actually test it. Hopefully the new system is up to the task, though I am a little worried that only 40% of the vapor can go to the fan when it turns on. fingers crossed that's enough.

I went with the surface book (top end). I'm sure it's going to be awesome for gaming.

I opted for the 256GB i5 model with the dGPU myself. The 8 gigs of ram is a bummer, but I anticipate that it should handle your average game well enough.
