Ah, quality Polygon aiming from the Doom video is back!

The game itself looks awesome, though. I can imagine it being even more fun for competent players.

This looks amazing

But on the flipside, those corridors seem very boxy and kind of same-y. How varied were the areas in the original game? Never played it

The areas in the original game were quite varied as you progressed through the different levels of Citadel Station. Some sections of the game as you see in the footage so far are quite claustrophobic which really helps add to the tension.

To be fair, the original game was pretty much in the same environments you see here except for Cyberspace which was kind of its own thing. The deeper you got into the Citadel, the more things changed.

Admittedly I have never played the original game, however I've seen bits and pieces of it over the years. I recall the environments varying quite a bit in terms of art. Not really sure in terms of design though.

Shooters back then generally used tiles for their maps, which is why games like DOOM and its derivatives always had floors and walls at right angles to one another. SS's engine was far more sophisticated and allowed for things like ramps and bridges, but it's still tile-based and ergo very blocky.

I have heard so much about this game but the graphics always turned me off and I never bought it. Time to see what the hype was about.

Time to put out my old SS CD-Rom to get into the mood for this remaster. Looks amazing so far. Hope they can recreate the tensions and feeling of oppression like the original game did. System Shock will be forever my favorite game series. So many good memories, so many great moments. Heck, I even had a cabin where I've always hide myself if I needed a small break from all the action (and to listen/read some audio-logs calmly). You know that one particular place where you would go to and settle if you're caught in the video game. In SS it was this one small cabin with a single window with excellent view to the stars. Dunno why but I'll always remember that lovely cabin lol (it's on level 2 so I probably have to wait for the full remaster ^^)

Seems like the game is more a reboot than a "remaster".

This means that they are going to rework all the level design? Because this is the best part of the original SS.

I haven't played the game since 2008 or so, and so my memory of the exact layouts might be a little bit off, but to me the areas in the demo seem to be nearly 1:1 copies of the original design.

GTX 670 and 8 GB RAM for min spec caught me off guard. I hope they're just playing it safe, since the game is roughly 18 months out. Otherwise, I would really like to know what kind of performance the game gets with that hardware.

Wait so I won't be able to run the demo with my 650 ti boost then. :s

Figured Id upgrade in the 1.5 years it takes to make it but It'll be hard for me to back without even playing the demo.

Well that video looked fantastic. Modern, but still close enough to refrain mind me of the original. I've been really impressed so far everything with everything they've showed.

Video on the store page looked amazing so hyped for the demo and game as SS2 is my GOAT and has been since release.

Don't want to drive by, but can't stand this kind of comment, really, and the trend started with the Polygon Doom video shaming is best nipped in the bud. The whole idea that super skilled player have more "fun" with a game (or that competence and fun are somehow related in general) is neogaffish, dumbfounded drivel, as the idea that one could judge a game only when being able to perform like a pro in it.

On a side note: in that gif case, I can totally see player panic in the confrontation as intended in a situation like this. Seems more immersive than Capt Neogaf headshotting the creature in one sec. Seems exactly what I would like to see as a dev, honestly. My 2 cents, of course.
