Take-Two: Bioshock franchise "really important for us"; series 25M, Infinite 11M

I don't understand this. Bioshock 1 + 2 sell 14 millions combined, Infinite 11 million alone, but it isn't enough so many people get fired ?

What were their expectations regarding the sales of infinite ?
They sold much less when they were new and 60 bucks. Eg. I bought Infinite for $10 and the season pass for $5.

I can't even imagine, if a game sells >10 million it *should* be a huge success regardless of development problems. Those sales are COLOSSAL.

I wonder how the DLC did?

Infinite is almost two-and-a-half years old now, so the majority of those 11 million copies were not sold at full price. The game sold four million across its opening three months, but the game entered development shortly before the original BioShock released and took roughly five-and-a-half years to finish.

They sold six million between March and May though.. that is still a huge number and won't include sales at a lower price..

Keep in mind 2K somehow manages to post losses constantly despite having several GIANT franchises. How they manage to post said losses I have no idea but they do

So would you guys be OK with a more standard (and mechanically better) shooter in cool scenarios but without the Levine excellence in writing/storytelling? That could be interesting.

Wait s minute. Didn't Lavine's studio basically fall apart after Take Two said the game cost too much? Now I'm learning it sold 11 million. How could it have been too expensive?

Even if it might take a while for the new one to come out, I'm still hoping for a remaster of all the Bioshock games thus far for next-gen. I'd love to play them again some day.

I just don't understand it, the sports stuff MUST be profitable if it is yearly (NBA2K)?

it really is crazy, I'm surprised they haven't got people in to cut a lot of the losses by thsi point.

Will be curious to see where it goes. The IP is in an odd place IMHO.

Infinite had huge budget marketing and on raw numbers seems like a great success but it feels like, as with say AC3, in actuality it has left the IP weakened despite the sales as actual reaction was devised and it really muddled the concept of what the Bioshock IP actually was.

It has all the igredients for big success as an IP but the next instalment I bieve will have to hit the spot in terms of clarifying the IP again I believe.

Because it took over 5 years of development and I'm guessing Irrational had a lot of employees for most of that development time.

And slightly OT, but the Wikipedia page lists 900+ employee's for Rockstar.. and while I know that figure isn't likely to be completely accurate...

A studio/group of studios with 900 people (and I know there are some doing other stuff, but still) have released GTA V with MP DLC/heists, and a PC/next gen port since September 2013. That is nearly two years ago and they've announced nothing..

as a business Take Two are mind boggling to me. And this 2K situation with the high sales kind of exacerbates that.

Isn't that the same time for RE4. On top of that the game got scrapped twice. Different budgets and a different time in game development but still. 11 mil and it's not good enough still boggles my mind.

Do copies that were downloaded under PS+ count as sales? Those could seriously inflate the numbers, too.
Still, this is one franchise where I'd welcome remasters very much. Haven't played Infinite yet, and time passing doesn't make a return to PS3 more tempting.

Bioshock 2 is a far better game than Bioshock Infinite.

Bioshock Infinite has some of the worst designed combat in any FPS I've ever played. The story is also a complete fucking mess, and the world design comes across more as a giant theme park than a real lived-in place.

That was the point and that why I loved it.
BI is MUCH better than 2.
For gods sake, if they return to rapture because they think thats what the people like, they can go and fuck off.

Wouldn't describing PS+ units as 'sold' be misleading to investors?

Hi, I'm nortonff. I spend my life going into threads to say that I don't care about the topic of the thread. It's a really good use of my time.
2K, would you kindly release a new one already ?!
ffs, i'll just reinstall the trilogy....

No Levine, no sale. If you want to get someone else to do the combat, go for it, but don't take away the brilliant story and atmosphere his people bring.

Infinite was one of the best adventure games I've ever played and yes, the action was kind of bland, but goddamn it was fun from beginning to end.

Why do people do this?

To be cool.

Infinite is easily the most disappointing game I've played in the last few years.

For such a cool environmental setting it made absolutely minimal use of it and wrapped it in a really ordinary shooter.

Andrew Ryan was a fantastic antagonist, but it's mind-boggling how many people misunderstand the character and believe he was someone who stood by his principles when his entire story is of a man who abandoned his principles when they got in his way. He was not an admirable person, he was a pitiful and despicable person, and that's what made him interesting.

Yup. No Gods, no Kings, only a psychopathic Godking.

As long as whoever makes it takes inspiration from Bioshock 1 and 2 and not Infinite I'll be interested. That game was a real bummer for me in a lot of ways.

I do think there is still potential for a new 'Shock game but I am not too bothered by Levine having nothing to do with the project. It is quite clear that BS:I was a very troubled development and I don't have the greatest confidence that he'd be able to oversee another major project very effectively. Some of the story elements of Infinite were really badly done and some of the combat segments (especially the final sequence) really soured me on the game overall.

I'm excited for the series. Bioshock 2 was excellent, and the whole idea of a philosophical shooter is still pretty novel.

Bioshock could do well without Levine, probably be even better. Take it to different settings with each game and make it more open and not completely linear like in Infinite and you'll have a great game.

Let me make the next Bioshock game.

So weird that a lot of people loved Bioshock 2. I thought it was the worst game out of the 3.

I like Bioshock for the story and experience more than the combat. picking up the tapes which gave information and backstories to the characters and setting in Bioshock 1 was so amazing in building a believable world.

Can't wait for a current gen game.

Bioshock will not be the same without Levine but it could still be a very good FPS. So jeah I'm very excited what T2 will do with this franchise. I'm always down for more Bioshock

Give me a Bioshock 1 remake in a new engine, with Bioshock 2's gameplay and hacking, with some better plasmids, better enemy A.I., a couple of new enemy types, and a few surprises in the level design. I'd pay $60 for that.

I'm down for more Bioshock provided the next game(s) are as far away from Infinite as possible. I thought the game was straight garbage outside of its visuals.

Just beat Bioshock 2 last week. It was a good game but even though I played Bioshock 1 4 years ago, B2 still feels like a huge expansion to me. The first half of the game is annoying since I lacked ammo and plasmids, and the enemies are stronger than in B1. I liked it, but not as much as B1. I hope I'll like Infinite more.

Nice to hear they haven't given up on the series though.

Like others have said, try out Minerva's Den. That's the best Bioshock-related anything I've played and it's pretty standalone as far as story goes.

Also, I really hate Bioshock 2 and Infinite. Bioshock 2 at least expanded the gameplay of the first one a bit but it was WAY too linear and scripted. I don't like being able to play for maybe 2 minutes before I get locked in a room and forced to watch an unskippable cut scene. And a good chunk of Bioshock 2 is based around Escort missions. I rest my case.

Infinite had a good story and ideas. But it was (again) too linear and scripted and it dumbed the gameplay down to Halo/COD standards. Give me my weapon wheel you fucks!

I love all the Bioshock Games. One is still my favorite though, felt the freshest experience and the story is great.

Infinite gets treated unfairly, I still think its an amazing game, and its story is certainly clever, if not cleverer than Bioshocks.

Infinite is definitely my favorite, but I think they can still do great things without Levine. BioShock 2 was helmed by someone else, and it was excellent, IMO.
