Tamales Suck

Funny, I've been thinking the same thing lately. Tamales are basically just Mexican Hot Pockets.

Once Hot Pockets are introduced into Mexico expect the Tamale to die a very quick death.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the typical Christmas meal basically a deconstructed ham or turkey sandwich?

Guajolotas, cabrones.
Never had one, btw.
Such a funny name :lol I remember a comic strip by Jis & Trino, they nicknamed a guy La Guajolota. As I said, I'm not a fan, not because of the Xzibit nature of the thing, but because it's hard to eat, at least that's how I felt. I'll tell you this, 'tho: tamales de mole, I haven't tasted one as good as in Mexico City. Add some champurrado and dayum...you're set.

Not for my family.

And btw, those torta de tamal pictures don't look good...

Nah, there's so much wrong with that assumption. There's not a typical Christmas meal for all of Mexico, for example in the central region romeritos are very popular around this time of the year, you also have buñuelos, pierna, etc. Turkey is standard procedure, but not in the form of sandwich. Not that I know, anyway.

Don't count on that. We eat tamales not because is the only warm meal we can eat, but because we like them a lot. An unique mixture of masa and strong flavor sauce, I don't a frozen meal replacing that. And yes, you are wrong in the last bit. At least there, the typical Christmas meal is romeritos and bacalao. And turkey prepared as the house like it, turkey sandwiches (and bacalao/romero) is for the next day for the left-overs.

I didn't type my question, which was really just a joke, out coherently. I originally had it as "What do white people eat..." but figured it isn't just white people, so I put "typical". I meant in terms of the traditional average American Christmas dinner.

Well there's people that really loves ketchup. I know I put the stuff on eggs, rice, and more, but never tamales. Wadaya know :D
I used to like ketchup a lot as a kid. Now I can only tolerate it on hamburgers and hotdogs, Nothing else tastes good with it imo.

I'll have to try it some day then. Maybe I'll make a torta tamal this year. I <3 making tamales.

And ketchup on a tamal? I think I just gagged. No offense!

Do you guys add anything to tamales? I would occasionally add a little mayo or munch on them with queso ranchero.

Really? I mean if your going based off some city wide award the restaurant received couldnt it just be that your taste is wrong(lol wrong opinions)? I mean seriously how can anyone say what restaurant is the best restaurant? The hole in the wall ones in my area are great compared to the bigger chains (taqueira jalisco #6:lol ) etc

Which one is this?
I live in Austin and would like to know.
I'm pretty partial to Curra's and LaFeria but fucking hate Guerro's and Chuy's but I'm no expert.
Just curious.

I don't remember the name of it. I was directed to it from some locals when in town for the Lone Star Roundup last year. It was on South Congress, though.

Hole in the walls are always the best, goes without saying. However, I have been to San Antonio, El Paso(probably the closest to what I am used to eating as it gets away from the gringo influences), Austin and Dallas and I have yet to have "Mexican" food from a truck or taqueria in Texas that compares to what I enjoy locally.

LOL where I live its like almost all Mexicans, seriously, guess you never been to Colorado. And yes there are roadside stands everywhere here, but nobody brings them to work like others here are having done where they are.
Dude, where in Colorado do you live? I live around southwest Denver (lincoln high)... and fuck yeah, that's the mexico central. We should buy some tamales from the avanza store and eat/laugh at the OP for being a moron.

Seriously... WRONG-GAF is wrong.

Don Cuco in this mothafucking tamal thread!!! Don't forget about the tamales de rajas con queso (jalapeno and cheese filled). Fuck the OP:lol

Tom Cruise, your tamales are coming out like that because...

1. You didn't steam them enough. (1 hour).
2. After they are done they will be soft , and you have to let them rest for a bit.

You're not eating the good kind, that's why. It's like eating BBQ from the Midwest and not from Texas.

Hey, fuck you buddy and fuck lebron too.

Anyway tamales are great. Fantastic. Especially with a damn good sauce provided.

Oh, and I just saw pupusas being brought up in this thread...

I once dated this Salvadorean girl from Utah (XD) for about 5 months. I guess she really liked me being Mexican or whatever and she wanted me to know about her culture. So she took me to a local Salvadorean restaurant to try out the pupusas...

I had a dish of them.... and I made the remark that they were just "gorditas with a lot of tomato sauce".

We broke up 2 weeks later. True story.

I feel proud of setting her straight, god damn it.

Tamales are one of those dishes that 99% of people suck at making (even Mexicans). But a good tamale is as delicious as it is rare.

home made or bust!

Home made/house mexican hot sauces are always amazing for some reason, i've rarely run into one i dislike.

The big three are solid (cholula, tapatio, valentino) but someimtes they can be a little too vinegary for my taste.

my grandma makes hot sauce I can't use too much of it tho or else it overpowers my tamale and mouth is set on fire

I live in Pueblo now, I find it funny that people here on GAF act like there are no Mexicans here, its possible I am the only White Guy here and that is pushing it since I am of Hispanic descent.

i like tamales. i wouldn't go out of my way to eat them but when they give me one i'll eat it. my friends mother makes some of the best tamales.

No one is saying there are no Mexicans there, they are saying it isn't Mexican central.

I guess its a matter of opinion, for me if everyone around me is Mexican it seems like that too me LOL :lol

.. I just wanted to say that today, while in Mexico for the holidays, we had the best breakfast ever, which consisted of "Tamales verdes" (green salsa tamales) that we bought from a lady that sells them from a huge barrel that sits on the sidewalk, outside a traditional Mexican bakery from which we also bought the "bolillos", which are an essential part of any tamales meal!

I get both Salvadorian from my mom and Yucatan tamales from my friends mom for every holiday. I am blessed!

Eres el hermano desconocido de Rewrite?

Anyone just get asked all the time if they want to buy tamales or champurrado? It happens everytime when I go to target, laundromat, or market.

No mames.

I see that alot too, everyone claims their mom makes the best tamales.

I'm pretty sure since I could do better than most people's moms but I wouldn't want to start a war now.

Neither I or my mom can make tamales worth shit. Bit I live in the best location for food in all Mexico City (mexican and international). So I'm good. :)
