Team Fortress 2 Sniper Update Info, Pyro Megaton

Seriously guys, your own crappy luck does not disprove the randomness of the system, quite the opposite actually...

Dead ringer completely changes the class. It's a real pleasure to play Spy now. Hahah
I'll say the same about the Cloak and Dagger. So much fun sneaking into enemy bases with zero detection :lol

baaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwww

i'm on one of these achievement servers and i still haven't got any items after 3 hours. but a few achievements <3

Yeah sure, but I don't understand who he is killing with his sentry, where the teleporter leads, and what kind of evil you can do to people of your own team that don't even move.

Maybe I'm just not evil enough myself.

Forgive my ignorance but I've been stranded out of town since last tuesday...

How does this new drop system work? I know its random and happens whenever. But does this reset everyone previous unlocks? Can you still grind achievements for spy and sniper to get their items?

Man I am so in love with "Meet the Spy" that I will show it during my presentation about machinima at my university. :lol

You can still grind achievements for every previous class packs that allowed you to in the first place. For Spy and Sniper it's not possible.

People that go on servers just to idle kinda make zero sense to me.

It works. Six hours of sleeping later, I woke up to check and found that I'd finally unlocked the cloak and dagger. 20 hours of playing/idling or whatever wasn't enough to get it before.

I also got a third KGB to go with my third FAN. Oh, and a fourth blutsauger.

Time to sleep some more and dream of the final preciousss I need, jarate.

It doesn't reset previous unlocks and no, you can't "grind" for the new items for spy and sniper.

Well the thing is, one of the main reasons for the unlock is to keep the game fresh and to get old players back. If players who already spent 500+ (or more) hours on TF2 and just want to play with or try out the new items, you're telling me they have to spent another 20+ hours just to have the chance to unlock them?

idling server definitely works. in some ways it's good as i don't have to play this game for obscene hours in order to get the unlocks.

Just sat in Gamerspace Achievement server, as spectator, all night and unlocked about 10 things, 2 i was missing. Now all i need is cloak and dagger.

anyone have a server suggestion for idling? Wont I get kicked after a map change, or will i stay spectator

That should answer your question.

Nah it proves the shittiness of the current system. Now, Valve can tweak this to make it work, and I think in the end, it would be a better system- and a version can be used for TF3. That''s not going to make anyone feel any better right now though.

Did about 20 mins of idling, and picked up a cloak and dagger. Not what I most wanted, but useful given how I play spy.

Have you not read the last five pages of this thread or something? I have been playing the game. I've probably clocked at least 12-16 hours of PLAYING time over the last three days. That's not even counting idling time. That's like 3-5 hours a day at least. Last night I think I played 4-7 hours straight. Is it healthy? No, but I was celebrating the holiday weekend and getting back into TF2 largely because I wanted to try the new patch and weapons.

Except, as everyone has repeatedly pointed out, you can't. I didn't get the cloak and dagger no matter how much I played. I will continue playing the game, but it would be nice to be able to actually try out some jarate before huge amounts of work set in and I have no time once again. Does that not make sense to you? :/

I'm entertained that you got that screenshot, Hazaro...you must have come back at an opportune time. :P I followed you there, thanks for the tip.

:lol That's so sad and funny and poignant at the same time. I like the song too.

Sad thing is I just got the cloak and dagger myself after about 10 minutes of idling, and i've gotten 2 Jarates.

I understand exactly where you're coming from.

And there's also the new maps which you can enjoy, and learn the important points of those maps and how to work as a team to best win those maps. I want to try out the new items too, but I'm not gonna sit there and worry about idling on some servers just because I can't have the items when I want them. Everyone's so focused on the items but apparently don't care about the new maps, which I find are actually really well done and I'm still learning them.

I've read the thread. I still think sitting there going on and idling on a server because "BAWW I want my items Valve!" is as stupid as the achievement box ones. You've already pointed out how you like to enjoy the items you have and not even help the team, which does wonders for the enjoyment of players that want to play the game normally, even with the system not working in their favor.

When I try to help the team, it often ends up being an exercise in frustration and they practically always lose due to the fact that there are 3-5 spies or snipers trying out new items on my team. I think actually having fun and learning how to use new items is more fun. If getting backstabbed endlessly as a medic is more fun for you, you're welcome.

Sometimes I do help my team if it's decent and we have a chance, and we win. That's fun too! (surprise surprise)

I'm not going BAWW, so you can keep your mockery for others. :) I tried to explain that normally I work each day until late at night, and playing TF2 is somewhat of a luxury. It would be nice to say "Hey, I have a 4-day weekend, and new weapons! Awesome! I'm looking forward to trying them on my time off!" Instead,

Yes, I have tried the new maps, partly learned the new maps, and will continue to try them (other than arena which I very rarely play). Do you have any other orders I must do to meet your standards? :P

Heh, I heard about you going "oh well, we can't win" and stopped helping even though your team ended up capping points anyways last night.

And I'm not making orders. I just see lots of complaining about the unlock system not working in people's favor and going to post "yeah I've been idling for ____ hours and I got ____!" If they can do that, I can complain about the use of those idlers instead of just playing the game normally and unlocking the items during normal play and just going "hey spiffy!"

Wow, you that bit makes you sound like an asshole.

If you play TF2 without doing anything for your team maybe it's better for everyone that you keep idling on some separate server actually.

It doesn't disprove that the system is random, it proves that the system isn't fun. If I play for four hours and don't unlock a thing, but someone else can play for four hours and unlock three new items, does the system really seem all that good?

The complete randomness of the system basically means it's encouraged to be in the game as long as possible. I've been playing the game as normal, finding an idle server before I quit, then alt tab out and go about doing other stuff as normal, or even like last night alt tabbed before I went to sleep in an idle server. I haven't seen many people try to idle in a server because they get kicked pretty quickly, but the idle servers don't affect anyone and still makes it viable to have a chance at unlocking something.

Awesome, I'm building a reputation. Hopefully eventually I can build a HATE ENGINE from all the negative energy. And actually, it very much worked. When I went pyro or medic because our team was mostly spies or snipers, I would end up getting backstabbed with half an uber as everyone charged to destruction, or I would end up being one of the only 2-3 people attacking a point. In my opinion, that's more frustrating than just goofing off playing other classes. When I can goof off (helping my team in the process) and actually have fun, it seems more optimum to me than stressing out about winning. If it's a close battle and people are trying, I'm perfectly willing to dive into the fray with whatever class is necessary.

I wouldn't complain as much about unlocking items in game if I actually could do that before the weekend was over. If you have a way for me to get jarate without idling or playing 30 hours in the hopes of roulette working out, please let me know. I'll post a screenshot of my inventory once I finally get the last item. Notice that I'm not even complaining that unlocking items isn't satisfying now. It would be nice to be able to earn things, but I'm being nice and not even complaining about that. Since I can't trade, I'm rolling with Valve's system and making the best use of my time. As Spock would say...it's...logical. Don't let it bother you. :P

Wow, you that bit makes you sound like an asshole.

I tried to clarify in this post. Sorry if it came across that way. If it's not clear enough, what I mean is this. Suppose I'm on a team where there are five snipers playing around with bows on offense, and three spies. Suppose everyone is running in two or three different directions on steel, one by one. Choices I could take include the following:

1. Yell at my team on voicechat. Become SRS BZNS internet hero, and try to whip everyone into shape, complaining when people do dumb things or when a crit kills me or whatever. I don't like this option, I complain enough anyway (but I'm trying to get better at not doing so)

2. Go engineer, and swing a wrench endlessly. Build a teleporter to help your team, build a sentry, fight a stream of spies, lose if your team doesn't do the offense to help your support efforts. I've done this too, and it's even less rewarding if the team does nothing.

3. Go pyro or medic. Help out on the front lines. I already made this explicit -- lots of backstabs, or I end up being the only one helping. It's not that I DON'T HELP MY TEAM, it's that in some cases, I'm one of the only two people doing it.

Does that make sense? :/

Everyone should just calm down. We've forgotten all about the fact that we hate the system Valve implemented with weapons for achievements, so sooner or later they'll come up with something you hate more than this system too.

Volcano, you know I love you in a hetero fashion--but I've been playing the game fairly all weekend and haven't gotten shit (2 Nataschas and the FaN, both of which I already had). Instead of wasting my weekend grinding in the game, I'm going in the other room to do work and I'll come back and play later. In the meantime, I might as well unlock some weapons.

So, how long do you think it will be before that start banning people for idling on servers? It is certainly not the way Valve expected people to play, so I guess they will make some changes soon that will make idling obsolete.

They never banned people for using achievement farming servers.

Besides, they're fighting human nature at this point. Their biggest mistake with this update was teasing people for two weeks and hyping up all this new content, only to then have people find they get access to it at a diceroll. As soon as people found out it was just time based, of course they're going to time-grind for them, just as they achievement-ground in the old system. They want the new content and this is how they get it, and I can't believe Valve didn't see this happening when they were designing this update.

As soon as there's an even partially deterministic way to unlock the new content (like "play for a really long time"), people will try and get it as soon as possible.

Again, I have faith that maybe in 6 months with a trading system and a ton of tradeable content this system could work. As it is now, it's grinding for dicerolls over time, and your ability to play slightly modified versions of each class is up to the whim of Math.rand().

They also should never have used MMO terminology. "Drops" have a lot of connotations, and this isn't a drop system. It's a lottery.

Raide said:

If you think people are angry now, can you imagine the backlash if Valve started banning thousands of people for essentially doing.... nothing?

The real problem with the random drop system is that there really aren't a lot of items to begin with, so it doesn't apply all that well to all players. Excluding the hats, there are 18 items. That's not a lot, especially when you consider that the people doing most of the complaining already had 12 of those 18 items. When most people probably only had 6-9 of those items (maybe even less), it seems like it's a good idea to implement. Really, if this had been done from the very beginning (or had all classes been updated in one massive patch), the system would probably make a lot more sense.

And as people have mentioned, the trading system would have helped out a bit, but that's not the major source of what people are complaining about. I think the best option, as some have suggested, would have been some sort of experience system where you could then buy the items. Sure, people would complain about it, but it probably would have made a little more sense.

Whatever, though. I'm actually getting new items now (as opposed to the achievement system, which I did actually complain about), so don't take this as any sort of hate on the new system, or pining for something better. Merely just observing the situation

Heh, that's what I've been thinking too. It's hilarious to me that all the morons have banded together and voluntarily exiled themselves into servers where they don't bother anyone else. Thanks, morons!

I decided that I may as well setup a simple and small TF2 server for the evening to see if I can get that can of bonk or the jarate, I been playing a lot but I want to go do other things this evening. If I can get a home server working ok i'll PW it for us gaffers to idle on if you want to join in.

Raide said:

Achievement servers have been going since the game came out. It's nothing new.

Edit: I was playing before and 1 guy got a new weapon plus a hat before the first round even started. One guy lost it.:lol
