Team Fortress 2 Sniper Update Info, Pyro Megaton

And there's also the new maps which you can enjoy, and learn the important points of those maps and how to work as a team to best win those maps. I want to try out the new items too, but I'm not gonna sit there and worry about idling on some servers just because I can't have the items when I want them. Everyone's so focused on the items but apparently don't care about the new maps, which I find are actually really well done and I'm still learning them.

That's nice you like to learn the new maps and everything, but too bad that's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people would like to use the new items on their favorite maps.

I would never have used an achievement server. But I can actually see myself using an idling server and just alt+tabbing out to do other stuff. I really wish they tied it to gaining points.

Here's hoping valve have data on people idling for hours on end and takes all their items away for a week.

Disgusting.

That'd cause endless amounts of bitching though! (And I would laugh at all of them)

Wow, it offends you that people get items without having to work for them? Isn't that the whole point of the system? :lol

On a non-internet-argument note, does anyone know how exactly the dead ringer damage reduction works? Someone on F7 was apparently using it to avoid dying to backstabs, though I guess that's a glitch. I feel like it does some sort of reduction, though I don't think it always saves you. I should test it with sniper headshots or something.

Same, I never used achievement servers(aside from medic, because his set was awful) and got all the unlocks fine, but now I'm using idle servers when I leave the game hoping to get stuff.

Then people will outrage more, idle servers would be no more, and people would go into normal servers to hold down left click beating a wall as engineer or something...sounds much better. :lol

As it is now, idlers aren't doing anything to you, no reason to get all offended.

Also,

Got the dead ringer and jarate last night.

Still to figure out a brilliant use for the dead ringer, cloak n dagger is much better imo.

Yeah...if I had your luck, or hell, ANY of the new unlocks, I would not be doing this.

Time for another nice long day of TF2 (At least until the Cavs game :D). Hopefully I'll get one of those new rooty tooty point n shooty guns today.

I hope the idling is patched out with tweaks to the drop timer. Both those in unison would improve the system quite a bit, methinks.

Just checked my idle server and see I got both Jarate and the Dead Ringer in a 10 minute span, finally! Time to play normally from now on. :P

Just played again this evening - still not a single unlock (new or otherwise). Absolute joke.

The plus side of all this is that I've now got back into Guild Wars, so I guess that will taking my hour or 2 of time I get a day to game from now on.

It pisses me off joining a server just to find 4-5 people sitting there idle. It ruins the game.

Oh I agree, and I don't do that. That's why it's nice to have idle servers where those people can be in one place that doesn't bother everyone else. :P

It amazes me that Valve came up with a solution for the people who complained about achievement unlocks yet they still have to find an exploit because its not immediate enough. I earned all three of the milestones for Heavy and Pyro in under 8 hours of regular play, Medic and Scout have taken me a bit longer to reach just the second milestones because the Medic Achievements are a bit wacky (9 hours) and I'm a shitty Scout (12 hours).

I used the achievements to learn how to play the game when I first picked Team Fortress 2 up on PC. I had played vanilla TF2 for a bit on consoles before but the class updates were new to me. I didn't know the Pyro's air blast could reflect/redirect a soldier's missles or a demoman's pipebombs. I thought it just shut the flamethrower off when it wouldn't stop spewing flames. The achievements gave me a basic framework when I first started playing, they do so with every class I'm unfamiliar with.

Damn, was playing a few games on this server that I got Jarate on and I got the Cloak and Dagger after a Sandman, Natascha, and an ubersaw.

The cloak does run out pretty fast, but the semi-cloak you get while walking is nice.

Speaking of that semi-cloak, are you able to backstab or deploy sappers when it's running out? Would be useful if you're desperate and low on juice.

The Dead Ringer really reduces damage, damn. I got hit by a crit rocket and only lost 19 health. I'm still really bad at effectively using it though, the uncloak noise it makes is loud, and no normal cloak makes it hard to get behind the enemy without being obvious.

Ah, thanks for the confirmation. So backstab doesn't kill, critrocket doesn't kill...I guess there's absolutely no way to one-shot a spy using it right now. :D

What do you guys mean by "semi-cloak?"
When the Cloak and Dagger runs out but you're still moving, you become uncloaked around the edges. When you stop you become fully cloaked immediately.

Well you have disguise, color outline, and invisible.

If you walk with the C&D on you are in the color out line form and it only takes you standing still to become fully invisible without that color smoke, etc.

ic...so cloak and dagger vs dead ringer, which one in your opinion is "better?"

I haven't gotten the Dead Ringer yet, but I've seen it used. If you're a Pyro, the ringer is pretty easy to foil (I did it unintentionally and saw the real spy running down the tunnel in flames). There's no regular cloak, so I guess you have to be convincing in a disguise.

The Cloak and Dagger really is powerful if used correctly, though. I've been practising with it on 2Fort, I can usually get deep into the enemy base without being detected at all. There's all sorts of low-traffic sweet spots where you can wait for gaps in enemy movements. It can also be effective for sapping, wherein you can hover near a sentry, waiting for the exact moment the engie leaves.

I find that the best thing for you to do against dead ringers is to play pyro, shock i know. Whenever i kill a spy now, i just start flamming every square inch of the area i just killed the spy in and if he is there, he gets lit up good.

been playing an insane amount of time this weekend... I unloked only a second ubersaw X_X
Ow well, it was still fun as hell.

I haven't gotten the dead ringer yet, but the cloak and dagger is some of the most fun I've had with TF2, ever. I am by no means a good spy, but if you've got good timing and a little patience you can get deep into enemy territory without too much problem. I've won a few rounds on Pipeline and Egypt just by getting past the enemy line and taking down the lone engie/sniper to cap the last point before anyone else even realizes what's going on.

Evading enemies that have spotted you is a cinch as well. As long as there aren't any pyros around it's pretty easy to give em the slip, find a spot where they aren't looking for you and just. stand. still. I find standing next to objects sticking out from walls to be very useful, as if someone bumps into you they are much less likely to notice. And crouch! They won't see you down there!

Greatest laugh I had with the Cloak and Dagger would have to be this:

I sat still in a corner in the enemy base, up against a hose and some boards. An Engineer walked up to me in a corner, turned around before he bumped into me and started building a dispenser. Naturally, I uncloaked immediately and backstabbed him and sapped it. I moved to the other corner and let my watch recharge :lol

I can't wait to get that, but the Dead Ringer has some funny moments too. My funniest was probably getting chased by a demoman, pulling the watch out when he bonked me with a bottle, then he TAUNTED while I got behind for the backstab.

Should include:
"Random chance (0.1% - 1%) of weapon drop per point earned"

Well that's what I put for Other anyway.

That sounds like an improved lottery concept--ultimately what they'll probably end up doing I think.

gotta ask: Is question 1 referring to the sniper/spy update, or any of the previous updates as well?

edit: meh, assuming you just mean this update

Any achievement_* map.

Nah, that's a terrible idea. The point is that this system is perfectly fair, rewarding everyone regardless of skill.

It has the potential of rewarding everyone, but usually doesn't. The odds are really against you if you have the unlocks for the rest of the classes already.

The problem is you feel like your actions are having no effect on what you earn. Points are an easy enough thing to earn. Each class gains points for what they're supposed to be doing so it emphasizes playing the class correctly. Even new players earn 10+ points in their first few games.

The current system is like getting loot in an MMO for just sitting there. The system I suggested is like getting loot after killing a monster.

There needs to be some feedback for the player. They need to feel like they did something to receive the reward. Otherwise, it's not a reward.

My bad--I said improved, but meant that as it's an evolution of the current system. I make no judgments on quality until the stuff shows up in the game.
