Team Ninja & Nintendo - NEW METROID on Wii!

A lot better. It got to the point where I didnt even care about dark samus. To be honest MP3 spoiler ahead,
fighting the girl in prime 3 that changes into samus(forgot her name) had more weight behind it than dark samus ever did. She always seemed so...weak, and not worthy lol.
i think the problem was that anytime dark samus appeared to hinder samus' progress was usually via a cutscene. with the sa-x she was more menacing and threatening because it felt like she could appear at any time during normal gameplay... like you were being hunted.

as the player, during a cutscene you feel safe cause you know there's nothing you can do till it's over.

Nobody posted the IGN interview yet?

This together with the whole "won't be using WM+" comments Sakamoto made, makes me think it'll be a mix of 2D & 3D (as well as 1ST person & 3RD person).

Someone said something about how this game will be delayed into 2011 or 2012...hell no, if Sakamoto is this far along into the game to know WM+ won't work and won't be added, then I'd say the game is further along than you think.

To add, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Galaxy 2, LOZ, Metroid & Kid Icarus (Retro Studios) will all come out next year. I think with all the motion copying coming from the competitor's, Nintendo will want to make it clear that their stable of franchises is just as valuable to Wii as the disruption motion control...and their franchises are something that CAN'T be copied!

Retro is not now, or ever was, working on Kid Icarus. It was Factor 5.

For istance, I decided to not open a new thread for the inteviews made by IGN and 1Up about Metroid, with also this additional information about Wii motion plus from G4tv.

If something new comes out, I could put everything in a thread, with bolded parts as I usually do.

Replaying Metroid Fusion again, looks great through the Wii. And goddamn is this game polished, everything from the placement of platforms to item locations, very slick.

SA-X stuff isn't nearly as scary the second time around, especially since I remember the locations she pops up in. Still love what they pulled off with it though. In a way the dialogue between Samus and the ship's computer reinforces the sense of isolation because it's not like the computer is going to jump in and rescue you. Samus is still all on her own for the most part.

mmmhhh why it's so colorfull? graphically it's doesn't seem so polished like Team Ninja games. I'm hyped for the story and the cinemas, they were great, the gameplay section was lacking.

The only gameplay sections we got were Samus performing some physical moves on the enemies and shooting...how could you possibly comment on less than a minute of gameplay footage?

Because the enemy models were a step backwards from Prime games, they have a more cartoonish look, I hope they improve graphics I really hope that, because right now they aren't impresive in the graphic deparment as Retro's ones.

Graphics remind me a lot of the bubble-filled areas from Super Metroid and the backdrops in Zero Mission; lots of saturation, lots of color. It's different than the "real" environments of Prime, but it fits, IMO.

EphemeralDream said:
Thoughts? The increased action suited the Prime series more imo so I had a great time with it.

It was alright, last battle was pretty awesome. Kinda tired of prime now, BRING ON OTHER M!!!!!!!!

I had allot to drink last night so my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders at the moment. What am I missing here?

Why respond about the graphics when he was asking why you were judging gameplay?

If you beat the Wii with a Gameboy Player hard enough, the Gameboy Player will eventually start to work.

Homebrew channel and a GBA emulator, I assume.

For the 12th time in this thread, Team Ninja is not doing the story. The story is written by the co-creatot of the Metroids, Sakamoto, and the backstory universe he created for Samus and the saga.
Also, the cinematics are not done by team ninja, they are done by a company called D-Rockets. But that is new news.

As for the art style, Zero Mission had a lot of american comic style, backgrounds and enemies, artworks and chozo suit also. Not Zero Suit Samus, that was more manga.

This is going the same art style as Super Metroid and Zero, lots of saturation as if it was a comic.

i think it's due more to Sakamoto/R&D1. The art of the handheld games was very comic-book-y. In particular, Zero Mission reminded me of a lot of Silverage comics, such as Jack Kirby's work.

Never said it was true, just a hunch.

New Itagaki interview up, seems he's sorta giving Metroid: Other M/Team Ninja/Nintendo his blessing in a way.

Here's a great post by a Retro art designer on Corruption (includes tons of high-quality screenshots): http://frogskull.blogspot.com/2008/02/metroid-prime-3-corruption-art.html
My goodness, that game is beautiful. Seeing some of those screens really does have me wondering exactly what they would have done with a zelda game from a visual standpoint.

This room was fun to work in. I wanted it to feel like a natural part of the planet that the pirates were slowly boring through. I gave the floor a makeshift feel. Working with Todd Keller, the art director, we came up with an idea for a type of mineral/metal on this planet that was a mix between wood and muscle in it's shape, but actually composed of metal ore, with veins of hot blue glowing substance inside.
This particular area he is describing came out beautifully.

I still don't get the subtitle. :(
there's a couple of theories

Metroid: Other M = MOM

Could be a reference to Mother Brain or Samus' mom.

Other M --> put the M at the beginning of Other = Mother

Again, maybe a reference to Mother Brain or Samus' mother.

honestly i don't think anyone knows unless the developers have mentioned it in an interview. could just be a working title for now.

Well, Sakamoto mentions the title is going to be explained during the story, so who knows.

Samus and Ness meet outside of the SSB universe?

I re-read again today all the Metroid Zero Mission manga and im starting to think is quite obvious that they are referring to Mother Brain with the title.

In the manga (this are spoilers of the manga and Zero Mission game, this story is canon, written by Sakamoto and a manga writer Kenji Ishikawa, and its probable lots of scenes will appear as flashbacks in The Other M, so read with caution):
At the start of the story space pirates go to K-2L to rob a mine of Afloraltite, there live Samus with his father Rod Aran and his mother Virginia Aran, along other people. Ridley comes with the space pirates and aniquilates all people there, all but Samus. Thanks to her father and mother Samus is protected and Ridley burned alive. The Chozo came along and take Samus to Zebes. They tell you that he was infused with Chozo DNA and the power of the Chozo Suit was done by Mother Brain. They want to make her the protector of the galaxy with also a Metroid army. This is because of the threat of the X-virus at SR-388.
Samus works for the Federation now (with two friends Mauk and Kreatz working with her, and no, any of them is the remember me guy) and try to stop pirates from invading planets, their commander is Adam Malkovich. They fall for a decoy and the pirates attack Zebes with no defense by part of the chozos. When Samus arrive, betrayalton from one of the chozos (Grey) and Mother Brain as they ally with the pirates to "protect" the galaxy. Mother Brain wants to use Samus as one of her commanders, telling her she is her real mother as she was the one that created a part of her so she could survive in Zebes (BTW, in the manga they allways name her only Mother, even Samus, only at the end the federation and Samus start calling her Mother Brain). Samus has a panic attack and Ridley attacks her with no mercy. They can narrowly scape thanks to Mauk and Kreatz, saving also some cpecies of Chozo from other planets. Then Grey, that was only doing a fake betray to the chozos and Samus, so he could disconnect Mother Brain. Uses the power of Samus (as they are connected by DNA) and converts in to a species of Chozo Warrior. The elder chozos tell Samus then that Grey is his father as is the Chozo that use the DNA to help Samus when she was smaller. Grey tries to destroy Mother Brain but Ridley cames a kills him. Adam Malkovich cames then with an army of spaceships and destroys nearly all the army power of the pirates, while in another ship Samus, Kreatz and Mauk, can scape with the elder chozos.
Some years later they send Samus to the 'Zero Mission' and that is the Zero Mission game. It also explains what was doing Ridley in space when you wer attacking Zebes. He was trying to kill Adam Malkovich. Adam and his army retains some time in space Ridley and his men so you have time to kill some of the commanders before Ridley appears.

During all the manga theres a lot of play with the word Mother, so maybe that are the flashbacks we are going to see during the game The Other M.
But who knows right now.

BTW, the manga is awesome, Ridley is the most vicious villiain ever created by Nintendo when you read it. Also the story explains lost of things of the Metroid universe. Lots of ties with Fusion also. I recommend you to find it and read it if you are a fan of the Metroid universe.

Yeah I'm pretty sure its just an internal code name just like Reggie said in the GT.com interview. First thing that popped into my head at least. Project M. Project Metroid. Its more of a word for the collaboration. I just don't see that being the title even if it is alluded to in the game.

Anyone looking for more Metroid stuff, don't forget about GameTrailers' retrospective. It's 5 parts, altogether about an hour long and their retrospectives are always good (although with some inaccuracies occasionally). The last one (part 5) tries to make some sense of the story and timeline.

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/the-metroid-retrospective/5261

Those retrospectives are the best things GameTrailers have ever done, easily.

This is no mario or Zelda, this saga has an official timeline and story. No making senses or trying to find alternatate stories of this, is just stupid.

EDIT, seeing it again, well they only show the offcial timeline to people so thats good.
Remember the rest of the retrospective being awesome.

Yeah, that's what I like about Metroid in contrast to Nintendo's other franchises. Its storyline among the games is about as clear as you could hope for. This is especially so considering that we've seen many prequels since the release of Super Metroid. It's just not like Zelda at all in this regard.

And Mario doesn't even need a long overarching storyline. Pretty much every game stands on its own.

Too sad they didnt show all the manga in gametrailers. Its very important story wise to the saga and the universe.
They only talked about the first 2 chapters and the released one has 2 volumes, first one with 7 chapters and the second with 9.

And BTW, they use the Nintendo Power comic as a source for things and that thing is not canon. In the manga is very well explained who is the leader of the space pirates. Ridley is the first commander when Mother Brain took control of them to use them to be the ruler of the galaxy. Ridley was the leader of the pirates when mother brain was only a computer from the chozo.
Mother Brain in the future wants to destroy the space pirates and all the other races to create a superintelligent race when she finish with their use.
Ridley smells this betray sometimes.

I just read the manga for the first time earlier this week and I thought it was great. Some of the things that happened kind of surprised me and it caused me to like Ridley better as a villain. I wonder if they'll have him talk in Other M?

One interesting thing I noticed in both the Nintendo Power Super Metroid comic and the Metroid manga,
was the mention of the destruction of K-2L and Samus having blood of a Chozo
(though the latter went into further details). Were those backstories ever mentioned in the game manuals for Metroid, Metroid II or Super Metroid?

Edit: Ops, added spoiler tag since some people probably haven't read the comic or manga yet.

I dont think so, and its a pity :(. I always thought if one day they put him voice he will talk very vicious using ssss like snakes and lizards. But with a voice that if you hear him you will shit in your pants with fear.
Have you read the two manga volumes (when it finishes after Ridley going for Mother Brain like in the game)?

That was writen by Sakamoto well before the manga, and other future games. Maybe they asked the source and he gave them a few deatils.
I even think that Sakamoto has the ending of the saga in his head. And if you think about it, Fusion is a real ending
she destroys all virus X and the only Metroid left is in her DNA, well, its known that pirate are re-constructing their army, as always (the were infected by X because they entered the facilty to take out the freezed Ridley, probably that costs less than cloning him again :lol), but nothing as threatening as Metroids or X
, but he can give it always a new threat, Metroid Dread for example, fear to metroids? Galctic federation scientifc has a Metroid DNA or hatch to clone more
(even isf samus destroyed the cloning space station)
? Maybe a new major threat? Who knows....
