I agree that he was probably drunk & caused a bad accident.

But what I find strange is that this is always the thing people attack Teddy with . . . People criticise Bush & Cheney for their terrible policies. It gets joked about, but the first thing that is brought up about Bush & Cheney is not the fact that they've got 3 DWIs between them and that Bush has been arrested like 3 times. Can't you attack Teddy on his policies?

Sorry, I hate when both sides do this, whether it was Alan Keyes in the Illinois senate race after their other candidates fucked themselves over or Patrick Kennedy here, whoever runs for a senate office (or takes over a vacant seat) should have at least, minimally filed state tax returns a couple times and maintained a home there for a bit.

Falwell's life was dedicated to creating a gigantic multi-million dollar ministry (more of an industry, really) based upon hating black people (later taken back), woman, and gay people, and swindling money out poor people who gave their money out of their sincere (if, in my view, misdirected) faith. He fought against the repeal of apartheid in South Africa, against integration in the United States, against equal rights for homosexuals in the United States, against reproductive freedoms (not just abortion, but any sort of birth control method), and all the while making millions off the backs of the poor.

But at least he never killed anyone, right?

Plus I'd say that Bush has been personally responsible for many more deaths in his lifetimes, and in an even worse way.

Though, in Falwell's defense (wow, I never, ever thought I'd say that) Falwell's losing lawsuit against Hustler Magazine was a HUGE victory for First Amendment rights. Even though he didn't intend it to be, in defeat he actually helped advance a very worthy cause.
 
Sad news, Teddy did a lot of good in this country.

I have to say, I'm more disgusted at the people acting like it's disgusting for other people to bring up what he did.

Do yourself a favor and read the Wiki or do some research.

He did what he did as a fucking grown adult. Not a young stupid kid. He was responsible for someone's death. And don't bring up the BU BU BUSH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEATHS. No, it's a war. It's a war you don't AGREE with, but that's still an opinion. (An opinion which I share, but soldiers dying in battle for a war I don't AGREE with is not the same as leaving a drowning girl to die. Because that ISN'T arguable. Leaving a girl to drown without getting help is not the same thing.)

And no, I don't buy the being "shocked" thing. Unless you KNOW it was your fault due to being drunk at the time, there is ZERO reason as to why you wouldn't stop at one of the houses you walked by to get help.

It does suck that this is happening, and I came into the thread to say only that, but when I read people's responses I had to say this. Stop pretending to be the "morally above all" people. Leaving someone to die is not something that is going to leave you. Ever.

And I'm actually offended by people like Cheebs saying Ted is a "better peson" than the people mentioning that he left a woman to die. Right. I'm suuuure it'd be the same thing if this was someone working under Bush. I'm sure.

I'm a diehard conservative and I don't wish death upon the man even though I would love nothing more than for him to be destroyed politically. I respect him for not changing his ideals over his nearly 50 year congressional service, despite not agreeing with him whatsoever.

I was speaking in general. We both know a large number of people are only sticking up for him for political sake. That's how this shit works. And as for Cheebs, I don't really care. Kennedy's life is a good example that no matter how much good you try to do, if are also responsible for something like Chappaquiddick, that's pretty much what people will remember you for; and rightly so. If his name wasn't Kennedy, he would be a lonely ex-con right now.
 
Does any of you understand the concept of repentance? Hasn't all the good Kennedy has done since then at least warrant you to not shit on him while he nears death?

Ummm, I guarantee none of us have ever left a woman to die in an overturned car. If his last name wasn't Kennedy, he would have been convicted of manslaughter. Leaving a woman to die isn't a 'character flaw,' it's the behavior of a murderer.

One thing I've learned in my time on GAF is that many out-spoken posters here do not in fact have any concept of repentance. They will eagerly tell you they don't understand it if you ask them.

My dad made 3, cause he was fucking hardass, but the last one wasn't pretty.

the doctors don't even call the surgery 'removal' they call it 'debulking' and you can usually do it MAX 3 times (depends on where the tumour is)

after that the radiotherapy and chemo will only help you so long before they kill you.

I don't have to, it's not like you're a new poster here. Either way, while what happened in Chappaquiddick was awful, people cannot deny that Kennedy also did a lot of good things. I don't agree with his politics, but he was a fighter for many groups and helped pass some landmark legislation, even some unpopular ones at the time. Confining a man to a single horrible incident is an ineffective as idolizing a man for one great thing he did.

Some people aren't utilitarian though. (i.e. A life is a life and no matter what you do.)

If I ever had the urge to order people around (i.e. become a politician) and do all sorts of awesome things for society because I am awesome and know exactly how to fix things, there is still a sin on my character I can never wash off and I would hope people bring that up in my thread when I get

I'll tell you something else. NONE of my mistakes involve doing leaving someone to just die like that.

And if I DID make a 'mistake' like that, you bet your fucking ass I wouldn't be able to sweep it under the rug. The name O'Meara doesn't come with privileges like that.

It's a nice strawman, but I never said that the mistake was little, or didn't matter, or that most people leave some one to die, so you guys can save your bullshit outrage.

The point is simply that everyone makes mistakes (yes, some such as Kennedy's are bigger than other's), and making fucking jokes about them as the person who made them is dying isn't very appropriate or classy, and I'm sure that you all wish that people won't do that to you when you're on your deathbed.

It was an interesting diversion though.
