  5. Mass Effect 2
  6. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  7. Super Meat Boy
  8. Halo: Reach

Since I have a Wii, maybe I should finish up Skyward Sword and buy Xenoblade.

Skyrim
Red Dead Redemption
GTA IV
Fallout 3
Mass Effect 3
Assassins Creed Revelations
Witcher 2
Mirrors Edge
Dead Space
Battlefield 3

Kameo
Halo
Uncharted
God of War
Grand Theft Auto
Chrome Hounds
Assassin's Creed
Borderlands
Battlefield
Crysis (with an open design true to the original)

not in particular order

Dark Souls
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Valkyria Chronicle
Resonance of Fate
The World Ends with you
Metal Gear Solid 4
Monster Hunter Portable(2nd,2ndG, 3rd, probably 2ndG if I had to pick only one.)
Atelier Totori
Super Street Fighter 4 AE

Can't decide the last one.
There are lots of games that could fit in the list that I haven't played/completed. Potential titles such as Xenoblade, TTT2, Atelier Meruru, etc

In no particular order:

Rayman Origins-timeless

Uncharted 2-blew me away, one of my first 'next gen' games.

Fallout 3-so much freedom. 120 hours in and still haven't beaten it.

Metal Gear Solid 4-sure it's long winded, but one game where I could not put the controller down.

Super Mario Galaxy-3d platforming perfection. IMO better than 2.

Mass Effect 2-loved the pacing, combat, characters. One of my all time favs. Love 3, but 2 beats it.

Dead Space 2-great series. I prefer 2, but both are top notch.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution-came out of nowhere for me having never played the original. Seems like it already gets overlooked in favor of other games. Outstanding game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2-Popular to hate it. I loved it

Assassin's Creed II-improved so much over the original. Though playing Brotherhood and Revelations has made me a tad bored with the series. playing II at release is one of my favorite gaming experiences.

Honorable mention: Bayonetta, God of War III, Resistance 3, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3, Max Anarchy, Portal 2, NBA2k12, MK9, Super SFIV, Heavy Rain, Dark Souls, Red Dead Redemption

This generation gets crapped on alot, but I think History will be kind to it.

1. Super Mario Galaxy

2. Bioshock

3. Wii Sports Resort

4. The Binding of Isaac

5. Gears of War

6. Minecraft

7. League of Legends

8. World of Warcraft

9. Angry Birds

bioshock
uncharted 2
dragons dogma
fallout 3
batman arkham asylum
battlefield 3

1.) Red Faction Guerilla: Awesome physics, the best destruction ever, awesome missions. The game reminded me a lot of the original Driver. The AI is totally batshit crazy and just doesn't give a fuck about anyone and it's totally hilarious as a result. I really REALLY enjoyed this game when I played it on easy. Jetpack <3

2.) Infamous 1 & 2: Didn't like Sly 2 at all, went in expecting nothing but ended up loving infamous 1 a lot.

3.) Team Fortress 2: best multiplayer game of this gen IMO

4.) Crysis and Crysis Warhead: I beat the original Crysis at least 8 times. Awesome graphics, great gameplay. I love sneaking around the jungle and killing the North Koreans one by one, you can play it the way you like but I loved playing it with stealth.

5.) Deus Ex Human Revolution: Awesome atmosphere, awesome stealth gameplay, lots of options. Loved it a lot!

6.) Half Life 2 Episode 1 & 2: Didn't like Episode 1 as much because it was a bit short but Episode 2 was awesome from beginning to end.

7.) Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2: Been a Battlefield fan since BF1942 and I liked both of these games. The destruction in BC2 was awesome. Blowing up a building and killing an entire squad, creating holes in the ground and hiding landmines in them...so many options....great graphics, great sound design, balanced and fun gameplay.

8.) GTAIV: Loved it! Ballad of Gay Tony was really hilarious :D

9.) Uncharted 1,2 & 3: Great series, not without problems but I still enjoyed all three games.

10.) Killzone 2 & 3: been playing the multiplayer component of both games recently and I love it. It's so satisfying to kill in this game, it really reminds me a lot of the original FEAR. The map design is great and so are the graphics. Haven't played the single player of KZ3 yet but I love KZ2 :D

*HD console list only ATM.

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Mario Kart Wii
NSMB Wii
Sonic Generations
Sin & Punishment 2
Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2
Eternal Sonata
Warriors Orochi 3
Sengoku Basara 3

Making this list made me realise just how many games from this gen I've still got in my backlog.

spontaneous list: (If I had to commit myself to one definite list, I'd die)

1. Rune Factory Frontier
Harvest Moon mixed with Animal Crossing and Loot RPG makes pure crack endless fun. No way I'd leave this behind.
2. Super Mario Galaxy
Perfect mixture of Classic Mario, Mario 64, new elements and sense of adventure with great enemies, soundtrack, art design etc.
3. Hotel Dusk
Great mood, greatest main character, good story that I want to revisit in the future.
4. Last Window
Sequel to the game above.
5. Metroid Prime Trilogy
Obviously, since this will save three outstanding action adventures at once.
6. The World Ends With You
Was thinking about Bowsers Inside Story first, but more Mario RPGs will always come and this one is also lenghtier with amazing endgame content
7. Zelda Twilight Princess
One has to suffer through the beginning once more, but the 30 or so hours that come afterwards are worth the trouble, , including the best dungeons of the series. (And I already consider the game ,,started'' as soon as you're the wolf)
8. Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Best story and storytelling of the gen, great use of motion controls and simply lots of details and love in this game that I certainly want to sink in again.
9. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Gotta save the best Metroidvania of the gen, as the series has been killed off
10. Kirbys Epic Yarn
Pure joy and it might very well be a one-off, while sequels for the other platformers, even Rayman, are already coming or a safe bet. (Either that or Mass Attack? hnnnng)

I haven't really played that many games from this gen, but the ones I have I really loved.

1. Demon's Souls - The gold standard for multiplayer games as far as I'm concerned. Every game going forward should have this level of immersion.
2. Dark Souls - The best Zelda game this generation. Wait, it's not Zelda? Still, I can't tell you how many hours I've spent playing this. The only game I've known of that I bought both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
3. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - The only cinematic game that gets it right.
4. Super Mario Galaxy - Must.collect.all.the.stars.
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Very fun and nice although not as good as SMG or past Mario games.
6. Bayonetta - I loved the various homages to other games and the overall feel of this game.
7. Kirby Mass Attack - Totally underrated and one of the hardest games I've ever played.
8. Bastion - The combat, art, and music makes this very worthy of inclusion.
9. Shadow Complex - The best Metroid game this generation. Did what Nintendo didn't do and should have done on WiiWare.....Nintendo needed to have just released a WiiWare only Metroid game. Perhaps they'll get it right next gen.
10. Mega Man 10 - Impossible to beat but still fun to play.

Metroid Prime Trilogy,
Xenoblade
NSMBW
FFIII DS
Picross 3D
Order of Ecclesia
FFCC : rings of fate/Echoes of time (pretty much interchangeable here)

pad the rest with DS games I think.

My list would probably look like

Reach
Crysis 2
Gears 3
Gears 1
Halo Wars

I dont know, I really didn't care to think of ten and gave up LOL.

This illustrates the stupidity of backwards compatibility. I dont care because I'll just keep my 360.

in no order:

Borderlands (1st mention here??)
Bioshock
Dark Souls
Portal 2
Red Dead Redemption
Metal Gear Solid 4
Oblivion (didn't play Skyrim)
Rock Band 2
Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions
Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty

1. Borderlands: untold hours of co-op with friends and loots!
2. Skyrim: 5 characters and still going
3. Bioshock: played through several times, great atmosphere
4. Mass Effect: Loved the first and replayed several times
5. Halo Reach: great co-op and multiplayer
6. Deus Ex HR: Loved the story and gameplay
7. Crackdown: Lost many hours just jumping around the city and collecting orbs
8. Minecraft: absolutely relaxing and chill on peaceful just building with friends
9. MGS 4: Much better gameplay than previous entries, story just as crazy
10. Left for Dead: wonderful co-op

Can't wait for Borderlands 2...

Not sure about a top 10, but here are my top 5:

5. Bayonetta.

Bayonetta_360_CVR_SHTboxart_160w.jpg

bayonetta-20091221031044779-000.jpg
bayonetta-20091221031047185-000.jpg

What a fantastic game this is! Bayonetta as a character is so memorable and the gameplay is 100% perfection! The controls are incredibly responsive, which makes the addictively fun combat bliss. I mean the combat system is just so good! The different combos you can use depending on the weapons you have equipped, cancelling attacks and stringing them all together is so satisfying. Throw in a great catchy soundtrack, tons of unlockables, classy style, great boss fights and quite possible the best controlled game IÂ’ve ever played and you have a winner! A definite standout of the generation and the new benchmark for these types of action games!

4. 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors

999_NDS_US_ESRBboxart_160w.jpg

You want a game with an amazing story that you wonÂ’t wanna stop playing, and when you do stop playing it wonÂ’t wanna stop thinking about it? Play this! RIGHT NOW! For anyone who ever says videogames arenÂ’t capable of good stories, IÂ’ll always recommend this. I donÂ’t remember the last time I was this engrossed in a game. The setting, the awesome cast of characters, the twists (OMG the twists!), atmospheric music and great writing will all grab you by the balls and not let you go until you finish all of the endings and unravel the full mystery. The way the story is paced and how it gives you little clues and new information at a perfect pace needs to be applauded. You think Inception blew your mind? Pfft just you wait till you get to the Safe Ending and the True Ending! An utterly unique, immersive memorable game!

3. Donkey Kong Country Returns

As a huge fan of the original DKC and especially DKC 2 (to a lesser extent DKC 3) the hype for this game for me was through the roof, and it lived up to the hype! With the dust settled, I’d rank them like this: DKC 2 > DKCR = DCK >>>>>> DCK 3. Whilst the controls are unquestionably better in Returns (minus rolling - which isn’t even that bad) it loses some points for lack of originality and atmosphere compared to DKC/DKC 2. But enough with comparing the game! As a stand alone game this is freaking awesome! The graphics – best on the Wii, level design (the time trials really shine here!), perfect difficulty/controls and a great soundtrack make this my favourite Wii game, just beating Super Mario Galaxy. Addictive and oh so much fun! Good job Retro!

2. Red Dead Redemption

red-dead-redemption-20100516105731733-000.jpg

What an accomplishment this game is! I mean really....do I need to tell you why this is so good? Literally everything about it is pretty much perfect. Everything just works! The graphics are jaw dropping (best on the 360 in my opinion), great voice acting, insane animations/physics, A+ voice acting and characters, incredible atmosphere....should I even go on? The amount of detail poured into the game is staggering and unmatched for this gen. IÂ’ll never forget riding my horse to Mexico as the sun was setting for the first time. A very polished, addictive game! A true classic!

1. Uncharted 2

I was late with this one and only finished it a few days ago in one day....WOW! I was utterly hooked and couldnÂ’t put the controller down. I think IÂ’m fairly comfortable in saying that this is this gens Resident Evil 4. Thank you Naughty Dog, thank you for making such an outstanding game! The lovable characters, voice acting (this is the best voice acted game IÂ’ve ever played...every single character was so perfect and stayed perfect throughout the whole game) pacing, graphics (graphically I couldnÂ’t believe what I was seeing at times - when I was exploring the snow area with the insane snow effects with Tenzin my jaw was stuck on the ground. It reminded me so much of Metroid Prime), sound + music, fun factor were all perfect! So many memorable moments! This game is just on another level. The hype is real people!

re4 HD
BioShock
Vanquish
Shadows of the Damned
GTA4: Lost & Damned
Max Payne 3
Bully: Scholarship Edition
The Orange Box
Xenoblade Chronicles
Uncharted (doesn't matter which game to me)

L4D 2
Dark Souls
Portal 2
COD 4
Valkryia Chronicles
Fallout New Vegas
Bioshock
Xenoblade
Bayonetta
Batman Arkham Asylum.

Ive done lists like these on many a forum, everytime it changes. The only games that are consistantly there are
L4D 2, COD 4, VC, and Bioshock.

It's cool to see people include CoD4. It was an excellent game that would be easy to retrospectively dislike because of how that IP has been treated since.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3
Super Street Fighter 4: AE 2012
Xenoblade Chronicles
The World Ends With You
Pokemon White/Black
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Persona 3 Portable
Little Big Planet 2
Valkyria Chronicles

Halo 3
Grand Theft Auto IV
Mass Effect 2
Call of Duty 4
Assassin's Creed II
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Gears of War
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Pokemon Soul Silver(does this count?)
Crackdown

Bioshock
Portal series (Couldn't decide. Pick one)
Uncharted Series (Same as above)
Fallout 3
Red Dead Redemption
MGS4
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time (It's a shame how underrated this game is)
Heavy Rain
Super Mario Galaxy
GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony

And I know it's still pretty early, but The Walking Dead is really, really good right now. Could take a spot on this list when it's all said and done.

1. Red Dead Redemption - definitely my favorite game this gen
2. Fallout New Vegas - its buggy mess, but it's a really good buggy mess. I loved Fallout 3 and yet I can't go back after New Vegas
3. Uncharted 2 - really good game around
4. Batman Arkham City - first time playing a game where I actually felt I was Batman
5. Mass Effect 1 - the gameplay isn't as good as its sequels, but just about everything else is better, especially the ending
6. Skyrim - this game has a ton of issues and it should have been a lot better, but it took me 80 hours to realize this
7. Saints Row 2 - thought the first was a decent GTA ripoff, but they took things to a different level with the sequel. So much variety, and my video game dream came true that I've had since watching Black Raim so many years ago. Swinging a katana while riding a motorcycle.
8. Bioshock - and I didn't even have a problem with the ending, also liked its sequel
9. Max Payne 3 - loved the style of the game
10. Cant really think of any others right now

Question - I've seen Xenoblade listed quite a few times and I'm just wondering if there's a specific point where it gets good, or maybe it's just something that's not for me? I loved it at first then after some hours dicking around in the first area I've moved on with the story. And I haven't gotten very far but the characters and story just aren't very appealing and the gameplay has gotten a bit stale.

Fighting games are at the top of my list because the graphical hit I take when I go back to play them is irrelevant. Its all about the competition and mechanics of the game.
1. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
2. Super Street Fighter 4 AE
3. Red Dead Redemption
4. GTA IV
5. MGS4
6. Fallout New Vegas
7. Mass Effect series
8. Halo Reach
9. Dark Souls
10. Max Payne 3

Lemme give this a shot...

1) Dark Souls - Still haven't beaten it but it's just sooooooooo goooooooood. Possibly my favourite game of this gen.

2) BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend - My favourite fighting game of this gen, hands down.

3) Red Dead Redemption - Wandering about with a group of friends... feels good man.

4) Skyrim - Skyrim

5) Vanquish - It has a button dedicated to smoking. Yes.

6) Portal 2 - Stephen Merchant. Puzzles. Yes.

7) Super Mario Galaxy - Makes me feel like a little kid again.

8) Devil Survivor 2 - Closest thing to being able to say Persona 4, excellent little hybrid of tactical-RPG and standard Mega-Ten combat

9) Catherine - There's just something really charming about this game, playing as this guy who spends his evenings jamming in the local pub with his mates, seeing his life progress over the course of a stupidly eventful week.

10) Halo 3 - Best multiplayer in a Halo game (in my opinion at least) and playing the campaign with mates is just great.

SMG (Wii)
SMG2 (Wii)
Zelda SS (Wii
Bioshock (PC)
TF2 (PC)
Twewy (DS)
Xenoblade (Wii)
SM3DL (3DS)
Picross 3D (DS) best puzzle game ever
RDR (360)

Pac Man Championship Edition
Rockstar's Table Tennis
Super Mario Galaxy 1/2
Halo 3
Bayonetta

I don't consider games like Portal 2 or Uncharted which are more 1-off experiences to be worth of carrying forward. I will still own them but I won't be replaying them next gen likely as much as I will with the above games. The games I mentioned all have a magical click to them that make them fun to replay for me.

Uncharted 2
Just Cause 2
The Saboteur
inFamous
Skyrim
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Tales of Monkey Island
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood

999
Hotel Dusk
Secret Window
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Bioshock
Valkyria Chronicles
Portal 2
Mass Effect 2
The Orange Box
Crackdown. Skills for kills agent, skills for kills

1. Catherine - the game is unique and has a different kind of story.
2. 999 - a great visual novel with a fantastic story and writing.
3. Corpse Party (if that counts, since it was retail in Japan) - fantastic scary story.
4. Hotel Dusk - again, great story and it's engaging overall.
5. Bayonetta - great high speed action, seems like a great evolution from DMC.
6. Tales of Graces f - JRPGs should have this kind of battle system.
7. Heavy Rain - great cinematic visuals that promote how the adventure genre can be and look if given great budgets.
8. Portal - an innovative game that mixes FP with puzzles.
9. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep - a very refined KH game that made me love the series again.
10. Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (if this counts) - a charming game that's reminiscent to the light hearted Lunar and Grandia games.

Special mentions:
Final Fantasy XIII - definitely not perfect but the battle system and graphics are of quality.
Phoenix Wright series - it would be in my top 10 definitely but it came out on the GBA so not sure if it will count. Great presentation, characters, story, and pacing.

1 - Bioshock
2 - Deus EX Human Revolution
3 - MGS4
4 - Halo: Reach
5 - Uncharted 2
6 - Gears of War 3
7 - LA Noire
8 - Super Mario Galaxy
9 - Trials HD
10 - Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Wow, it's WAY too early for this thread. Looking at the rest of the year, all of our lists will probably be different in half a year-or-so.
That's why it's happening now, because it's a low point in terms of releases. If every list would be different in a year, I want to know the ten games people will be removing when they look back at the whole generation. And I'm sure we'll have an official top ten for the generation thread when the time comes.

If in two years time we have a best of the generation and my list is full of Versus XIII, Metal Gear Rising, The Last of Us, Ni no Kuni, The Last Guardian etc. It's not going to actually reflect the majority of the generation. I want to know what people think at the moment, when there's nothing coming out so I can see what I missed thus far.

I can only think of 7 right now. I'll edit later.

Pokémon Black/White 2, one of the most complete version yet.
pokemon-white-version-2-20120416103304368-000.jpg

Pokémon Platinum, same.
pokemon-platinum-screenshot.jpg

Battlefield 3, this gen best shooter imo.
battlefield-3-pc-1299592182-004.jpg

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, my favorite T-RPG.
ffta2.jpg

Jump Ultimate Stars, best fighting game on the DS.
Jump-Ultimate-Stars-3.jpg

Ouendan, best rhythm game ever.
osu_ta10.jpg

Persona 3 Portable, high schoolers shooting their heads to summon spirits ? Yes please !
persona-3-portable-playstation-portable-psp-003.jpg

Not a single Wii game in the OP makes this thread pretty worthless to me, sorry.

I probably wouldn't have one, either. Japanese action games (both 2D and 3D) haven't been very strong on the Wii and that's the sort of stuff I'd carry over.

I write inFAMOUS 'InFamous', I don't even know why.

I can almost understand that as a sort of grammar mistake...famous, add a prefix, you forget not to capitalize Famous or something. All right. VanQuish and NiGHTS, though, are done just to spite me.

Ugh, I feel dirty just typing those two out.

I have nothing against the Wii, DS or PSP, or even the PC I guess (there are games on PC I listed, but I played them all on PS360), there's just nothing that I value higher than the ten in the OP.

Last generation, Metroid Prime would certainly get in my top ten, but the best games on Wii (SMG1), DS (TWEWY) and PSP (KH:BBS), I would probably not replay at all.

1. Resident Evil 5

2. Resident Evil Rev.

3. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance

4. Final Fantasy XIII

5. Killing Floor

6. Devil May Cry 4

7. Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

8. Super Robot Wars Z2 Part2

9. Zelda Twilight Princess

10. Silent Hill Shattered Memories.

In no particular order :

1. Super Mario Galaxy
