The $25 PC

I've been keeping up with this. Is there any normal PC thing it couldn't do when it's done? You know, within power constaints. I wonder if I could output to a TV with ESPN3.com with it, for example, and run Skype on it with a USB phone. If so, that would be awesome. I've been looking into getting a small, mobile PC, because I don't do any gaming - just streaming content and Skype/chatting basically, so something like this would be nice I think.

Or something like this, for example:

Anyone have any suggestions for something like, that, but cheap like the OP?

I'm not, that's production cost for a nexus one.

The point he's trying to make is that a Nexus one doesn't merely cost "175" dollars to make. It actually costs around ~650 retail. The carrier subsidizes the cost to get you into a 2 year contract.

This thing is 25 dollars to make without being mass produced. Add in mass production, and this could very well fall under 15 dollars.

You can't write full papers on a phone realistically. Students are not going to do homework on a phone. This is a huge innovation.

You could get a XBOX360 and xbox live. I believe Skype is already coming later this year, and if you have a major internet provider ESPN3 should be free.

Two flaws:

1. Should have replaced USB with Bluetooth. Then it could support more than one device at a time.

2. No WiFi radio. You can hardly call it a computer if it can't access the Web.

Skype for 360? I haven't heard anything on that.

It's a low cost solution for people in poor or developing areas to be introduced to Computer Science, it's pretty crazy all of the demands GAFers are making heh. It has wired ethernet in the $35 version, and you can get a USB dongle to connect more than one device.

There's wired ethernet.

Not 30fps, but still impressive.

picmip or whatever lowering + lower textures and resolution (if it wasn't 640?) probably would bring it up to 30-45? That said, the fact they can get the Q3A engine to run at 15 frames at the default settings seems impressive to me.

I'd be interested if this got some proper support as a "wow neat!" gimmick thing to mess about with. But I seriously doubt it'll get developer support and traction. :/

Any ideas of when this will be released?

Will it have an enclosure?

They're aiming for Q4 2011, not sure of an exact month. From what I've read they won't have an enclosure at first, but they are talking to some vendors to get them designed. For now I think one of the forum users is planning on selling enclosures made specifically for Raspberry Pi using a 3D printer.

TheSeks - what sort of support do you mean?

I'm not even sure if this is possible but wouldn't it be smart to add a more simple connection like the old yellow white red wires. Would make more sense based primarily on what type of market they are looking at.

What are the chances of this running emulation decently? NES, SNES, MD, NEO-GEO etc? You could almost have it stuck on the back of your TV plugged into HDMI, would be ace. Not sure about a controller, I guess people have already written Linux drivers for many controllers.

Interested.

Ah, these kids nowadays, they blow my mind.

In my day, you couldn't call it a computer if it didn't need its own room to store it in.

soon....

(they have 100 currently and they are going to run a few tests then auction them off)

Seems really cool, but I wonder if the specs are enough. Why not just get a small HTPC instead, will be much more powerful!

I see it runs 1080p video on ubuntu, nevermind then!

I wonder if XBMC would run on it, then it would be the ultimate htpc really

Cool but I wouldn't call it a 'PC'. Although that is vague term, I'd say that it implies something that can run Windows.

So my PC that runs linux isnt actually a PC?.....the what is if not a personal computer?

i wonder if Microsoft would ever consider releasing an ultra Light windows OS if these thing ever get popular in the next couple years.

Windows 8 ARM edition?

Hehe.

You must be young.

My first laptop:

Amazing how miniaturization works.
hehehe... here's another cool page about the KayproII:

http://oldcomputers.net/kayproii.html

And I still have my first Laptop:

http://oldcomputers.net/trs100.html

It still works - I was running it a few weeks back for a lark; had it hooked up via null modem to an old Dell laptop I've got that still has a serial port... I couldn't afford anything like the Kaypro back then, and I needed something that was genuinely portable (20 year old musician, and as itinerant as you could be), so the Model 100 suited me... I learned to Program on that old thing...

This should be the flagship device for OnLive.

A keychain computer that you can plug in and play Arkham City. They need to officially support Linux quick.

lol how cute.

The $25 PC part is misleading. It can be a rather weak PC. But this bitch is perfect for us engineers that are tired of payin 40 bucks for shitty ass arduinos, fezes, olimex boards, you name it. My robot is gonna be rollin' deep this Christmas.

Could it still be powered the way it is with all that wireless tech built in?

So why is it using a male USB end instead of a female end? You would need a female to female cable just to plug in a keyboard no?

If I'm looking at the schematics correctly, it has two USB ports, one for power and the other for connectivity.

It has composite video out and what looks like a stereo jack. I wonder if this will pick up any major financial backing. This would be perfect plugged into my kitchen TV, but the specs aren't what I need them to be.

Ow man their is a thread about it awesome, :D.
I have been following this PC for about 1.5 years now.

Buying one and making a portable media center for 100% awesome.

Great news. Hopefully cases will come out (or guides on how to build one) and I'll have something I can carry around.
I want that to :).
