I've pretty much been on this thing non-stop since 10:00 am and now it's 1:00 am and battery is at 4%. Very impressed.

I just can't believe this thing.

In keeping with my curmudgeonly stance on the uselessness of wallpapers behind iPhone icons, one of the first things I did was change the home screen wallpaper to one of the simple black textured images. I think it's a nice touch that you can change the images between the home screen and lock screen.

And, good god this keyboard is great to type on in landscape mode. Not so much in portrait mode when I have to type with two fingers.

Also, fun fact. I can't access the app store on the device in Canada. I can load apps from my Mac but the app store says that it's not available in my country while on the iPad. I hope they fix that,um, soon. If I still get an error message on April 24 then I will feel pretty damn silly :lol

Fun fact: I now have 61 epub books and 10 iPad only apps loaded into iTunes, and I don't even have an iPad.
Yet.

I'm desperately trying to convince myself to wait for the 3g version and not run out an buy one tomorrow. The sad thing is I care more about the GPS receiver than the 3g radio. Why Apple, WHY?

Edit: I before E.
Except after C. Why English, WHY?

I completely disagree. I love having my triforce wallpaper behind my apps. But I do agree on how wonderful it is to have multiple different wallpapers(and by multiple I just mean different between the lock screen and everything else.

I don't understand paying such a premium for functions that your iPhone has.

Do you really plan on taking your iPad out in public that much ? Can you live without GPS in 1 of the 2 devices ? You can turn your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot for the iPad, so that makes the 3G redundant. I'm assuming you have an iPhone of course.

I'll be getting a WiFi version, the added cost for 3G (plus the ongoing cost) simply isn't worth it (in my opinion).

Unless iPad owners plan to singlehandedly bring Satchels/Man-purses back, there is no point to the iPad 3G. It's far too large to carry everywhere like a smartphone. It's primary use will be casual web browsing while on the couch or crapper or something.

The same functionality in a standalone marine GPS runs well over a grand.

The thing is, I dont need it, as my boat has a crappy 4" screen marine GPS unit already. But, c'mon!

No problem. Did that tracking number work? I haven't checked.

Yep! The wait begins anew. . .

I saw an app that allowed you to use the iPad to scratch your mp3s on a virtual turntable, is that out? Anyone tried it?

Tell yourself -- iPad when home (or at work). iPhone while away. Then buy the WiFi version of the iPad and buy/upgrade your iPhone in July. Send me a cheque for this spiritual advice ($499).

Can't believe how much I love this thing so far...sitting with this thing while watching a blu ray makes me feel like Futureman or something :lol

I feel you and everything...but there can only be one Future Man.

EDIT: I realize that the reference may be a little obscure. But I don't care. Those of you who get it shall laugh together.

It's called a briefcase or shoulder bag. What the hell do you carry your laptop around with?

Seriously. It's like he's never heard of briefcases and shoulderbags :lol I personally have this sort of briefcase-purse thing from Adidas that I use to bring all my stuff, from notepads and books to my DS and whenever I buy it, the iPad :_)

The free Yahoo Entertainment app is pretty durn nice.

Yeah. The TV listings part of the Yahoo app is drop dead sexy looking.

I'm still on my iPad. I can't put it down. Typing feels pretty damn natural now. I've gone non stop since 12:30 this afternoon. Posting on GAF from my iPad while watching F1 on Speed, so awesome.

You guys are awesome!

Ohh when this comes out in the UK (by them the 3G version will be out) I'll have to take the morning off work so I can go and queue up.

Geeky and sad but I loooove it!

Hey if you can afford it, by all means, it's your money.

For some people it will be worth the wait and the money. If you can take 3G out of the equation, GPS isn't going to tip the scales for me.

Does the Weather Channel support other countries and its cities, like Copenhagen?

And do you guys save documents as PDF or ePub format?

I do have a problem, though, with the safari pages reloading every time you hop out of the app then back into it, or when you switch pages. I hope they do something about that one.

But I KNOW someone out there bought Sam & Max, please let us know what you think...and Geometry Wars too, we need impressions quick!
Shit, I was worried About that. So it's not practical to open a bunch of pages in tabs to read later? That's a shame as I do that quite a lot.

Depends how you set up. You could have the homescreen kept clean with only a few apps and a nice wallpaper, then the other screens can be more full

can you have different wallpaper for each homescreen? That'd be nice to help with categorising - eg a game background for your games pages etc

I really am having a hard time believing how much my personal demand for this thing had done a 180 so quickly. I am getting one in two weeks. I generally don't like Apple products despite their quality because of their philosophy on the lockdown stuff. But really, I must applaud them with this. I think they just did with the tablet market what they did with the mp3 market. The only way I see them not being completely dominant like with the iPod is with either the courier actually happening or Google doing a great tablet. Either way, Apple got there first.

Getting to actually use one really REALLY changes the perspective.

I just want to say I love this thing!!!!

I really don't think i will hardly ever touch my laptop now, now only if I could get Zero Punctuation to work.

Alright... Day 2!

Got this puppy charged up to 100% and going to take her through the paces. First observation of the day is that I'm typing better than yesterday even still.

...perhaps I'll need to take back my "can't type an essay" critique sooner than I thought.

...does your iphone have to be jailbroken to do this?

Has anyone tried reading iBooks outdoors in the sun? Other than lack of a camera, this is about the only thing keeping me skeptical about this thing.

Either way, turning your mobile device into a wifi hotspot drains the battery like crazy. It's not really a feasible option to be used in the public as it may seem.

Your not wrong, but in a pinch if you really need wifi and it's not available, you've got an alternative.

I'm at my in-laws house right now for Easter (yayyy!) and they have us in their basement. The wifi totally doesn't make it down here so out came the iPhone and I'm banging on all cylinders!

Walking around yesterday afternoon, I already saw a bunch of people holding iPads. Pretty funny.

Im' interested to see how the games come along on this. I hope devs are motivated to make awesome RTS and Strategy games that utilize the functionality. I hope it doesn't turn into a bunch of 99 cent shovelware that plagues iPhone gaming.

I've pretty much decided I need one of these, but not until the 2nd gen version hits. I suspect Apple will address some of the glaring functionality problems with this one, I just..... need to be strong... for another year.... can't buy until then.

Yeah, you can use it plugged into a power source for internet access, but it is no substitute for losing 3G on iPad if having internet access anywhere on it is what you wanted in the first place, which some people here are suggesting.

I abandoned all sense of rationality and drove down to The States last night. :lol

went to Crossgates Mall in Albany (3.5 hours away) and was in line with some other well natured geeks till doors opened. got in, got my ipad, drove home, played with it and then crashed and slept for 10 hours.

the lineup was kinda fun and it was nice to see such a varying demographic within that line but it’s not something I would do again under these circumstances. it’s just so far away. from now on, any new product launch that gets me really hyped won’t get me to wait in line for more than a couple hours. and no border crossing.

Gaf detectives notice. I’m on some B-roll for a local Albany TV network station story about the launch. :lol

I'll have to walk over to the Apple Store a few more times once the crowd's subside and play with the thing a few hours. I still need to justify some reason that I actually need this. I'll use it to log onto my work's database and mess around with that. I guess if I could actually use it for work, I could get the 3G model, so I could then work on the train and bill my employer for the 3G usage....? Urge to purchase is rising.

Hey folks.

Had a wonderful day playing with iPads yesterday. Now that things are all set up they should settle down somewhat. I'm also going to work and figuring out the first update to my app, Textual.

On another note, anyone else notice how satisfying custom wallpapers can be? This is a shot I took from the bottom of the Umeda Sky building last time I was in Japan:
