The Boys - Final Season Teaser Trailer

I thought Stranger Things was much better. I actually liked it. It was sappy and too big for its britches at times, but I thought it was quite satisfying. At least it felt like they put effort into that finale. This finale certainly wasn't as bad as Game of Thrones though. That was like the all-time worst up there with original Dexter's finale. This just felt cheap and rushed, but the whole season did so we were prepared for it.

But yeah, I thought it sucked. I bet if you did a rewatch it would be even worse. Think about how the characters and the show was for its entire run and watching this finale it dawned on me that I felt like I was watching a different show. Like, it felt like a new team of writers and showrunners came in and just started writing without any context or experience writing these characters. Homelander didn't feel like Homelander, nothing except Hughie and Starlight felt right. I don't know how else to put it.

And so many stupid things I could nitpick in this finale I kept asking who the fuck wrote this script? This is not the same quality of previous seasons, it just isn't. It's like dramatically worse. Did they write this partially with AI? I'm not even kidding. I legitimately have to ask. I was LOLing at some things in this finale it was so stupid and hokey.

I was a little disappointed that Mother's Milk helping countess crow didn't have a payoff. The way it was filmed made it seem like it was a big deal MM was helping this character, but it doesn't come up again really. I thought they were going to do a silly thing showcasing how loyal crows are, but i guess the point of the scene was just literally MM not being a psychopath for two minutes.

Also the ball gag shouldn't have killed Oh Father. We know what happens when he yells out with a ball gag in his mouth from a previous episode. It just flies out at high speed!

It was the best episode of an absolute dogshit season, so pretty low bar to clear, but it was still fairly bad, though not horrible. So, barely above dog shit then.....

In summary, the last season gets a cat shit / 10.

Every single thing about this season felt like they wrote a longer season and they had to truncate everything. Homelander had to die but somehow I still feel like the show didn't earn it? Big things would just happen, fallout for 5 minutes and just move on. Look I'm not going to go out and act like we had to drag things but killing the president being and the entire world isn't even questioning it? That just felt like a penultimate decision that leads into the end of the show like Walt kidnapping the baby and calling the cops and admitting he was the mastermind behind the meth operation. Instead we get "pretending to be shocked" meme and series finale time.

That should've had a fllout that lead to end of the show and I still can't get over it for some reason! Why is it bothering me for fucks sake!?

Yes it felt like it was written by people who were brought in hot, had barely seen the show and had to write a final season in like two days.

Either that or midway through writing it the team was told hey the budget is gonna me like 80% cut, so you guys are gonna have to make do, and they had to toss the entire script and start over to make it work.

There were midway through season episodes where Homelander got into fights that were more epic than that final fight. And it took place in one fucking room. It was really underwhelming. And he didn't feel powerful at all. There's no way Butcher is going toe to toe with V1 Homelander but Butcher was kinda kicking his ass a bit. We saw Homelander beat the hell out of Ryan in a previous episode and somehow now Ryan is able to prevent his way stronger father from flying. What was that all about?

This episode felt so small compared to what everyone wanted it to be. Small locations in almost every scene.
 
I feel bad for the actors who had to slog it out till the end. What a nightmare to be contractually obligated to finish this shitshow while you see other opportunities pass you by.
 
Welp, season five went from something I'd watch when it completed to having no interest. Outside of reading hot takes that take five seconds vs 8 hours of viewtime.

I'll keep rewatching The Wire for the first time in 15 years instead.

Force him to live in prison, powerless for his crimes, and given a life of essentially nothingness. Butcher would not let that happen, and I guess you don't know if the power loss is a temporary thing.
 
Fun finale with plenty of great moments, but not quite worhy of the show's pedigree. I expected something really special but it wrapped up pretty much like I expected it to.

Pretty astonishing that TV writing has declined so badly in the past 10 years that most series finales get endless speculation about a nonexistent REAL finale.

I didn't watch too much of this series but seeing a sex joke slotted into
the main villain's death
proved to me that going through the whole series would be a waste of time. Invincible kind of shreds this show, not surprising given the source material is better to begin with.

Edgy blatantly political anti-Bush comic vs edgy blatantly political anti-Trump show. At least back then people were smart enough to shit on the comic for having zero-nuance political commentary.

In the comics almost everybody was insane.
 
The entire final season made it clear they were completely out of ideas. The shock value of having someone explosively shit blood ran out 2 seasons ago, and it's in nearly every episode this season.
 
Funny how this scene was just imagination. It's like everyone was waiting for Homelander to go nuclear, but nothing happened. In this season, he killed the fewest people of all. Five seasons of waiting… oh, oops, he's already dead. Never mind, see you in another show.

Yeah, probably the only reasonable way they could have ended it instead of trying a last minute alienating twist. It's pretty much what every other character had been saying to Homelandar, shit like how he's a disappointment, bad product etc. Once his powers get taken away, he turns into the base level bitch he would be without them.

Anthony Starr deserves at least an emmy nod, if not the win, for his terrific acting.

A couple of thoughts on the finale, using an older show if his as a comparison point, Supernatural:

  • The lack of all out action made it feel like a Supernatural ending (lack of budget), but it lacked the kick of powerful dialogue to make up for it which Supernatural had.
  • It also lacked teeth compared to Supernatural's season 5 finale (this is where SN fans say the show should have ended) and also the Supernatural final season finale.

Due to both, The Boys ending moments lacked weight which is a little sad and a little funny because Supernatural's final season managed to have weight, even though the final stretch of episodes happened in mostly empty lots and sets due to Covid.

In saying that, I thought…it was okay 🤷‍♂️

My season ratings:

Season 1: A
Season 2: A-
Season 3: A
Gen V S1: B+
Season 4: C
Gen V S2: C+
Season 5: C-

Gen V S1 had a strong start with potential and I'd easily put it closer to the first 3 seasons than the last 2. Gen V S2 gets a markdown because even though I liked it, it built towards nothing and Marie was wasted as a character.

No one even remembers that two other Gen V kids were supposed to be in season 5 of The Boys(the psychic hot chick and super strong hulk-like guy) because they were in the first trailer for this season.

Their scenes are completely missing which most likely meant that a big cut was made. Also going from that I'm going to take a guess and say that the Marie scenes in this finale were reshoots to have her help but not fight, so they sloppily shoved her into a Starlight protégé position to be a person who helps and heals (which I guess works because she could do a full heal with her bloodbending).

I'm being nice about my rating of this finale, because they hovered at a D to D+ for most of it to advertise Soldier Boy's show.

Amazon still needs to work on Prime video. It sits closer to Paramount Plus and Peacock in terms of spotty show quality when it should at least be at Netflix level in terms of budget and scope.

I shouldn't have to keep pointing back to The Expanse when someone asks me what peak shows are on Prime. I guess Fallout is getting there but I need it to cross the finish line first, on both feet.
 
Today I watched the final episode and it was a total and utter disappointment—the whole season itself, actually. It was slow, boring at many points, and everything dragged on until the last two episodes, where everything felt rushed without any coherent development. The final battle should have been the entire final episode and the epilogue at the very least, or the second-to-last and last episode to develop it properly.

They should have made more episodes or condensed the bullshit and dedicated the rest to something more interesting. Soldier Boy was never heard from again; The Deep, who I expected act of redemption from, ends in the most embarrassing way... Also, like, Oh Father and a few other characters were just thrown in the trash.

And Homelander ends up turning into a wimp begging for mercy, and Butcher's ending... Honestly, everything was just horrible. And I don't know if it's just me, but looks they left the ending kind of open-ended just in case they decide to make a more sequels or spinoffs.

When people have this take, as usual, I highly recommend shows and movies that are not being heavily marketed or based on huge I.P.

What you want is out there but it requires exploration. People won't get it as much when following the trending stuff or having things fed to them.

I said this before in another thread, but I truly feel that the hungrier and better writers out there have mostly moved away from mainstream supes and sci-fi.
 
This is definitely the Edward Furlong of shows - so much potential, then everything turns to shit

Ending is weak, with so much plot holes...

Watching this series from the beginning until now is like watching that one friend who had so much potential become an alcoholic and spiral down the drain until the inevitable end; sad it turned out this way but also relieved it's finally over.

Side note: The actor for Oh Father should definitely do some video game voice acting.

He has the type of voice that would perfectly fit a military shooter or sci-fi commanding officer role.

20 minutes into the first show of the first season and it made me feel "bleck".

It's impossible to avoid clips of the finale on Twitter today so I went ahead and watched the whole thing in 1.5x-2x playback speed... and I am so, so glad I bailed after S2. If you told me during Season 1 that this epic premiere season would culminate in a 4-minute brawl in a single room, and a cliche finger-on-the-detonator standoff in another room... I'd be incredulous.

Honestly, I can sympathize with the few people defending this finale because I remember it took me some time to accept that the LOST finale shit the bed. Give it time and they may eventually admit it.

Speaking of LOST, I'd like to thank Damon Lindelof for teaching me to recognize when the showrunners have no idea what they're doing and when to bail.

He Mentioned that this can't be real and it isn't it foreshadows ep 9 as even Kripke and cast said that the Ending will be the best in the whole series,

Now remember the Leaks, yes you do, the homelander fights US millitary and snaps, that thing is for sure Episode 9 that got leaked from a VFX artist.

How stupid would Soldier Boy feel. Boys-universe keeps playing him like a pingpong. If they ever make a sequel he needs to be so uber pissed off at each and everyone and should fuck off to living in war jungle or something.

I don't think it was running out of ideas. Probably have to turn the script into room to room action and plot for the sake of budget, which is going to Vought Rising now.

My guess would be the third option. Move things towards the spinoffs. That's essentially why most of this season was Soldier Boy's season zero.

It's sort of like how Mando himself took a slight backseat for Ashoka, Boba Fett, and the other Mandalorians in his show for all of their spinoffs. However I'd argue it was done more gracefully there compared to this season of Boys where Soldier Boy essentially ran the season for almost 6 episodes straight.
