The culture of recording strangers in bad moments and posting them on social media is gross

Usually I reserve judgment because most always it takes 2 fucking idiots to escalate to the point of what we end up seeing in these viral meltdowns videos,

but in this case. Give me a break.

This guy a fucking nerd. Lady is a straight up psycho.

I think everyone carrying a phone camera does bring some good to society, like gun ownership and keeping everyone in check so to speak, but I don't know how healthy it is

Something tells me this video of a dude talking about birds isn’t going to go viral like the one of that bitch being racist and trying to kill her dog.

What does being a nerd have to do with anything. How does this video of a seemingly harmless guy talking about how excited he gets about bird watching shed light on your argument that he must have in some way escalated this.

He saw that entitlement coursing through her veins and got out his camera. I’m glad he did.

Yep. Cant even yell racial slurs at starbucks employees without it going viral and losing my job. SMH what is the world coming to these days.

Its like the concept of heated gamer moments mean nothing to people anymore.

I think you missed the point of the post

Let’s be real: It’s anti-white (and primarily, anti-woman) bigotry

Oh come the fuck on. It’s mob justice and the seemingly innate nature of people getting off on outrage. People getting their panties in a bunch about bigotry for calling Karen ass Karens what they are due to their behavior are beyond retarded. That doesn’t mean their lives should be ruined, but this lady epitomizes Karen

Boy, you sure breezed past that small but important detail...

i agree it is invasive and fascist

the culture of shaming people in public is in general a hateful and antisocial culture

really sucks that it is openly celebrated. if only people could demonstrate how good they are by highlighting their own goodness, rather than another's badness.

While I 100% agree the latest woman was being a massive shitheel, it’s shocking how quickly people lose their jobs and lives over these “in public” moments.

I didn’t at all. I gave what I consider to be the real reason for these things going viral, which isn’t anti-white or anti-woman bigotry, but that doesn’t mean I like it or think it should continue. We aren’t who we are in our worst moments, and don’t deserve to have that shit posted to the world for eternity. But the reason people are pissed at this lady is because she was acting like a dumb cunt (aka “Karen”) not because she was a white woman

This post is true at the same time that everything I said is true. Nothing in it contradicts each other.

I said it's possible he could have been killed, and it is. Killed from her lie.

You're arguing the probability of that is low. And it is, but it's not zero.

If you want to get out into the weeds with extremely low probabilities, she is more likely to be killed or raped by a black man than a white man on a per capita interaction basis as well.

If you want to argue that it is threatening his life to call the cops, it is also threatening her life not to. To paraphrase you, the probability of him harming her is low, but it isn't zero.

The argument that calling the police on a person who scared you or whatever is akin to commit deadly violence against them is stupid.

This woman didn't try to kill this guy. Stop with this hyperbolic nonsense

Having a bad day, losing your temper a bit, maybe saying something dumb is one thing, but shit gets real when you call the cops on somebody.

After the past couple weeks it really has hit me how vile it truly is. Every fucking day I see some viral video of some person being recorded saying something of doing something people would consider “mean” and now the entire internet can laugh and mock this person and try to ruin their lives.

It’s really fucking gross. People aren’t allowed to have bad days and moments now apparently. And why the fuck do people even have their phones on the ready to record these “incidents” in the first place? It’s almost like they’re hunting for people to catch in the act of doing something because they know it will get likes, so they just go around recording everyone until they find someone who does or says something out of turn.

It’s a slippery slope and I’m not sure where this culture ends up if it continues down this path. Imagine having a shitty day, being at the grocery store, and you see some weirdo recording you for no reason and you go hey buddy, fuck off, get that camera out of my fucking face. And the next day you find out it has 2 million views and your boss is calling you to tell you you’ve been fired because the internet thinks you’re an asshole.

I absolutely loathe it.
I agree so much. I hate the camera era we're in. Wish I existed in the old days, where you could be yourself without worrying about the world.

I left and deactivated my Twitter last night as a result of such a video.

i feel 0 sympathy for people that degrade/assault a bunch of teenage kids doing minimum wage jobs, get video taped in the process, and have to deal with the repercussions of it afterwards

there's a huge difference between having a bad day and being an abusive piece of shit

I think that there should be surveillance everywhere where there is no expectation of privacy at all times in order to deter criminal activity and immoral behavior as well as to create a record of these phenomena whenever they do occur.

The other day I watched an episode of The Orville titled "Majority Rule" that basically showed the end result of this sort of behavior. I mean, yeah, it's played up and exaggerated but with how our society is currently willing to judge people and situations with as little context as possible, I wouldn't be surprised if we found ourselves adopting social media as a part of our democracy, giving the powers of judge, jury, and executioner to everyone connected to the internet.

it's Orwellian and anti-social

it essentially promotes alienation & backstabbing

i agree it is a horrible thing
It's anti-social, but so are the people being captured on camera. Treating others like dirt fuels animosity and tears the social contract apart. Because of technology, we can effectively force people to look at themselves in the mirror.

That said, "capture culture" is a slippery slope, and unfortunately I don't trust people to NOT take it too far. Part of me enjoys seeing the assholes and bitches of the world reaping what they've sown, but another part of me disagrees with the idea that people should be ostracized from society or fired from their job over the kinds of squabbles that happen all the time.

This is indeed the same behaviour as in DDR, where the Socialist party encouraged people to report "dissident" behaviour. Did your neighbor say something negative about the Socialist Party? Well if you tell us we will reward you and arrest him.

Same basic principle but with social media and virtue points. Troubling indeed, but not surprising at all considering the way the world has evolved the last decades.

Hate capture culture!

I equate it to zoo tourism, where people are so closed off to nature/live in their bubble that when they see something shocking or unique they must take a pic of it or point and laugh etc

Its terrible because this capture culture is training the masses to not act out/or be loud in public/make a scene etc. its acting as an unofficial big brother enviornment. Where youre constantly on the verge of being on camera and getting pasted to the internet.

In the next sentence the YOU is also me).

This is the way you all want the things to go, I can bet all of you have a camera on the phone, have multiple social media accounts and poste on it more than once a day, most of you are more attached to your phone/Pc/console than your parents or your surroundings.
Most of the ppl I know are scared of real life, everyone loves to watch it but noone want to face it, this attituted makes ppl look at "bad moments" like someone look at the animal of the zoo.

I'm so sick and tired to not be able to be angred or pissed in public cause in seconds it will be on the internet.

We speack about freedom, we criticise other country cause they lack of freedom, but in reality we are not free to do anything anymore, I can't fucking get drunk anymore unless I'm alone at home cause someone will capture it, post it and shame me, the world we live is pathetic and I'm sad that Covid didn't manage to reset our priorities.

come on man, being embarrassed is rarely going to “ruin your life”

don’t let exaggeration ruin a good thread

Nobody has ever had their career ruined by a social media mob. Cool, good to know.

Lets be real here would she have called the police on him if he was white? And knowing the NYPD that is practically a death sentence.

In 2019 NYPD officers fired a weapon in an adversarial situation 22 times. Given 67% of the 270 murders where race was recorded were by black people (57% of victims were black), one has more to be afraid of in the presence of a black person than of a cop. You disingenuous cunt.

Sure, fill your boots.
not sure how you expect people to respond to your retarded hyperbole so have fun at your “peaceful protests”

With some people I honestly wonder how they manage to walk and breathe at the same time. You are one such special individual.

More people get ruined by social media than killed by cops.
I'm gonna call bs on that one, do you have the stats to back that up? I feel like I've seen more US Police being trigger happy situations than I have over people getting "cancelled".

Edit: Infact, let's double down on this, most innocent black people killed by cops tend to get their name dragged through social media anyway from people trying to "prove they deserved it".

This is very popular in europe when refugees collide with the police.
Sometimes when a refugee did something illegal and was about to be checked by a police officer they started resisting and screaming, even attacking the police officer. When the officer restrained the refugee then there was always someone filming, but they later never uploaded the refugees attacks, but only the “police violence” to the internet.
This went as far as policeofficers refraining to restrain them unless absolutely necessary, because they are scared to loose their jobs.

I hate that people act this way and film only the parts that fit their political agenda even though they see and know that what they do is unjust.
Human scum.
