The Darkness: The Official Thread

It's a weird aspect of the market dynamic, but I've seen it time and again, that when a game comes out even just a month later one platform after another, it goes largely ignored on that 'late comer' platform, even by people who *only* own that console and have no other means of playing it. It's as if the excitement over the game has expired, everyone has moved on, etc.

Now, it's not always the case, but it seems to be the case really often. IMO, it's never a good idea to stagger the releases like that if you want to maximize sales.
My guess is a lot of people buy the game because it's "the new thing." And they see it come out for another system and they perceive their system's version to be flawed or inferior. I don't know.

For releases like this, people strike when the iron is hot. It's a new IP, getting good buzz, get all the sales you can while it's hot. Staggering releases is instant-death for that version, unless you provide something extra in it to justify the delay.

If you don't, then you make it look like you messed up and that version is lesser than the other one.

I am laughing at people wont be buying the game because it's delayed 1 month on PS3 in europe. Just import the PS3 US version then...

Any idea how many hours the single-player is gonna be? And also any good unlockable stuff or new game + type thing incentive to play thru it again? ****ing next-gen is killing me with the price

I completed the game, I estimate it around 15 hours, depending on how much side-stuff you wish to do of course. Good length for an action game.

And yes, the PS3-version has accomplishemnts and unlockables. There are 50 accomplishments, such as 'devour 300 hearts' or 'trap 5 people in a black hole'. There are 100 collectables that unlock additional stuff, concept art primarily.

Oh I have a question about multiplayer: Are the servers International or divided into USA and Europe?

I'm asking because I'm thinking about importing but having to wait for anyone to pop up in multi late into the night isn't my idea of fun :/

This is actually a very good way to make a PS3 cost less to own than a 360. Buy ten imports and you will have saved so much money that your PS3 and games will cost less than a 360 and ten regionally locked titles.

The downside of course is that while PS3 titles are not region locked, some games might force you to play on US servers for multiplayer where you are at a severe disadvantage.

Just buy your games on Australian sites, it'll be cheaper than importing games from USA.

I don't know about that.

While that normally would be the easy thing this time i can get it cheaper in the uk than importing it. Also we dont know what the deal is with servers yet either so i might have to go for the 360 version.

So is this PS3 Europe delay legit? Cause if it is, I want to update the OP.

The best and most reliable online gameshop in Poland just changed the release date from 29/6 to 20/7 so I would say it's pretty much settled. Shit :(, I wanted PS3 version for free multiplayer mostly. Oh well, so I get Call of Juarez this month insted...(or sigma...? Arrhhh, no it's out on 7/7...too late :P )

Ultima or PSXExtreme?

EDIT: Checked. PSXExtreme. Damn! I already have a preorder over there but the 1 month delay is a serious turn-off. I'd import but multiplayer hinders it :(

care to share what happens when you unlock one of these accomplishments?

are they actually called accomplishments?

is there a notification ala LIVE that you have unlocked an accomplishment?

how do you view your unlocked accomplishments?

You don't really get anything for these accomplishments, as far as I know. You do get the extra content by finding collectables.

They are called accomplishments and you see it on your screen when you've got one.

You can view them during the game in the menu and also when not playing in the menu.

Great T.V Spot.

The vibe i get from this game is that it's a SuperNatural Violent Action Blockbuster.

Like Blade. I dig it, and i can't wait to play this.

Yeah, because that next month has NO games worth purchasing either right?

Doesn't work that way.

If you don't spend 60$ this month, you'll still have them next month. Don't know much about real life math, but i don't think the 60$ has a time limit to be spent.

thanks, one more question.

do the notifications seem universal, similar to "x is online" notifications on PSN? Or are the notifications more developer based with a Darkness theme? I'm also assuming that by viewing them in the menu, you're viewing them in the game menu and not the xmb menu.

it sounds like they are similar to the Resistance achievements except that there are now notifications for them.

No, they're just in the game, not PSN-style.

And yes, you view them in the game menu.

And in Resistance there were also notifications...? But they were the same notifications as when you were getting ammo etc.

Have any reviews popped up yet? This game has been hyped considerably, but I need to read a few reviews to confirm if it's good or not.

Reviews are under embargo until release but ones floating around indicate it is pretty good. Scroll back in this thread a bit . . .

According to CAG, the ad says it'll be available on 6/26 after 2 PM.

That was what CC did with Super Paper Mario. Although they didn't lower the price, they just said they would give you a gift card if they didn't have the game in stock by 2PM.

I've heard 4 or 5 great reviews. All around 9/10. You'll get to see for yourself in a few days.

Well, how good is pretty good? I'm a bit leary about adding another FPS to my small PS3 collection, especially since Resistance still offers some good thrills. I would need a little more convincing beyond "this is like Resistance; I would need a "this is MUCH better than Resistance" comment.

Will the PS3 version have anything to stack it above the 360 version, or will they pretty much be identical? As long as the PS3 version isn't worse in any way...

Have any of you with review builds gotten to try out multiplayer yet? It's surprising how little is known about it. Some people I've talked to on the internets didn't even know it has a multiplayer component.

According to previews and that one review earlier in the thread, the pacing is slower than a game like Resistance. It's alot more story driven, and let me tell you, if it sticks close to the comics it's a dark and satisfying story. The powers alone should set it apart from your standard FPS fare.

I'll second that. I remember reading a little about the multiplayer in how you could summon monsters to attack your opponents, having them climb walls and hide in shadows to catch them by surprise.

Do the aesthetics hold up? I was hoping to try out FEAR for the concept of combining horror with FPS, but it ended up being a crappy port. If Darkness provides fun, with excellent graphics, a good length, a creepy atmosphere and a solid multiplayer mode, then I'll be that much more interested.

I can't wait for this game to come out. Everything sounds and looks amazing. Just hoping that Chappelle could introduce the game at the start up screen by yelling "Darkness." :lol
