The Darkness: The Official Thread

Like? For example? Please I would like to know what I'll be missing. If anything I'll just borrow my brother's PS3 version when he's done with it.
I don't remember exactly, but there were interviews, movies, and all sorts of other things. It was a long list with at least 15-20 items.

Just ran through the intro on 360. As I expected, motion blur and AA is present. Everything else seems to be the same, though. It looks a lot nicer with the blur. I really would like to hear from someone at Starbreeze on this issue. I wonder why it is not present on PS3? There have been plenty of PS3 games with it.

I have the game paused at the same place as when I first posted, though, and I feel as if the sound is not as high quality on 360. I might be crazy, but it sounded REALLLLLY good on the PS3 version yet something seems a bit different this time. I can't say for certain, though.

I'm still happy with the 360 version over the PS3 version.

There's all the comics, docs, etc. on the PS3 version.

Also just got back from EB. They had sold out their entire launch allotment in half an hour of opening! Yay!
Any comments on the PS3 version? I'd really like to know why motion blur was cut.

Seriously. This makes me think a lot less of Starbreeze, to be honest. And why hasn't this been mentioned elsewhere?

Didn't they say the PS3 was developed concurrently with the 360 version? It seems almost as if they ported it over from 360.

Lame either way. That combined with middling impressions, I think I'll Cheap Ass Gamer this one.

Dammit. The more I hear about this game, the more I want to get it. Going to have Best Buy price match Circuit City for $50 but I don't want to make the run across town (25 minutes, there and back) tonight when I'll be over there tomorrow. :/

EDIT: Or I could order it online from Circuit City and go through this:

seriously...a lot of bitching because this? Is halo 3 etc looking better than darkness graphically? Bet Bungie gets the free pass though.

Seriously, I love the fact that CC discounts new titles lately at 10 bucks a pop, but man there shipping is horrible as well as there 2:00pm policy. There latest quarterly numbers were quite bad and those are two things I would definitely suggest changing for the better.

Are all the comics available on the X360 version? I hope so.

F*CK MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES. They make buying a new game f*cking hard as hell and RUIN the experience.

This is just one of the reasons I like you as a poster. I feel the exact same way.

This thread just turned my pre-order into a rental. Had the PS3 version down for pre-order, but I'm not going to support this. Yes, I could just get it for my 360, but my 360 must hold out for Bioshock and Halo 3. After those, it's probably toast (locks up on discs all the time now as it is). Definitely not going to support a subpar PS3 release. I'll pick up Ninja Gaiden Sigma instead.

Pfffttt....if the still game looks and runs great overall, if it's a quality game I don't give a damn. Differences were a lot worse last gen actually worth something of a damn, but even then it didn't stop quality games from being quality games.

Get over it and enjoy yourself a good game. If you got a system for the most ideal version, well you ain't got much of a problem. It would make your life less stressful to not worry over the little things.

Your loss.

I really thought this would be a case of both versions looking the same. I guess not, the trend of X360 version being better 90% of the time continues.

check out the drama queens. the game is supposedly still good and if you had any interest in it, why not take the plunge on the ps3 version?

is no AA and motion blur really a total deal breaker, or just an excuse to bitch?

fyi i'm probably going to get it for ps3 cause i don't feel like waiting for my 360 to return.

Probably just the difference between compressed and uncompressed audio files. As long as the frame rate is good as people have said, I'll be picking this up tomorrow.

You have a problem with multi-plat releases? That'll teach you to buy more than one system. :D
totally kidding

Based on impressions, it's a solid game with a great presentation. How anybody could not buy a game because of a lack of AA or blur is stupid. It doesn't mean they can't bitch though.

Darkness missing motion-blur <> phone it in POS port from Ubisoft

so is the motion blur and AA the only thing better on the 360? if the ps3 version has inferior framerate then i will skip it... if the framerate is rocksteady i will go out and buy it RIGHT NOW.

Yes, I certainly think a lack of AA and motion blur is worth quite a bit of bitching. I expected more from Starbreeze.

And WTF, are you seriously suggesting that Halo 3 gets a free pass, from me? Swing and miss, dude.

I know you'll lash out on me for suggesting that you should cool it with the damage control a little bit, but whatever. IIRC, you don't even own a 360 or a PS3, right? Noone's even outright pissing on Starbreeze - I think we have the right to express some disappointment that such a skilled developer could not at least get motion blur into the PS3 version.

Well, I only played a bit of the PS3 version, but the framerate was smooth. They both seem to run at the same framerate (mostly 30 fps with minor drops here and there). If you have a PS3 and no 360, I'd still buy the game. I'm just really anal about details and whatnot. I can also state that the loading times between the two seem to be EXACTLY the same. Motion blur and AA seem to be the only missing features from the PS3 version (which is a big deal for me, but perhaps not for everyone).

I'm really enjoying it thus far, though. It feels GREAT. I honestly do not understand the complaints aimed at the controls as the character AND camera have a sense of weight (similar to Riddick, I suppose). Moving through the environment simply feels good (unlike something such as FEAR, for instance, which felt terrible in this regard).

I'm still very disappointed in Starbreeze for this issue. I'm surprised they allowed this to occur, honestly. Of course, the XBOX version of Riddick had that awful low resolution issue not present on the PC, but that was a different situation (XBOX was much weaker).

lol halo 3 will get a free pass everywhere. It will swing 9s and 10s all over the place even if it would been average.

*looks at poster* Ah it's you. Go back jacking off to your LEVEL magazine or something. I will buy a PS3 for this game and the future library, but motion blur is not a dealbreaker for me. As for starbreeze give them a break, they said it was the first time they worked with the PS3 hardware.

Alright, let's tally up the scores:

Xbox 360

+AA
+Motion Blur

PS3

+Bonus content including comics, docs & more
+extra video channels in-game
+Sound (dark10x?)

...why couldn't the PS3 have motion blur or AA. It'd be a simple decision if it did. :(

I have the Ps3 version and I have not encountered any slow down at all! I am about 2.5 hours in and even with 6+ enemies on the screen the frame rate kept steady.

Well, apparently Starbreeze has gotten a free pass from the majority of sites and magazines that have reviewed it, considering that we hadn't even heard about the motion blur and AA missing from the PS3 version until a few end users mentioned it.

I was already pretty damn sold on the game, but that was my only real concern. Double sold!!

I'm going to go pick this up at Best Buy (with a price match for the $50 at Circuit City). Pretty excited, haven't had a chance to play many games lately.

To anyone who has played both versions (dark10x especially): any difference in aiming sensitivity or smoothness between them?
Feels roughly the same, really. I'm one of the few that prefer the SIXAXIS to the 360 pad, though, and actually preferred the feel of the game on that controller. You shouldn't have any issues with either.

what? 95% of the reviews have been from the Xbox 360 version, so how is it a free pass?

I guess they just lack skilled CELL (earlier reports in this thread talked about comlexity of CELL and no AA) programmers on their team. Actually I believe most companies do currently.
It's not just to port your ordinary multithreaded apps/games afaik.

I'm a few hours in (360) and I'm really enjoying the game so far. I'm taking my time and exploring every little nook and cranny of each environment. Starbreeze did a great job of creating a believable game world, and I love the level of detail in the game.

sounds like i'm going to go get this now... for fellow canadians, futureshop is selling it $10 off!

That's where I bought my copy from. Been playing the PS3 version for a good 2-3 hours. It's pretty cool, but DEFENITELY you can tell it's one of those games you play through a couple times and forget it.

The whole world here is so damn immersive. Graphics are fantastic controls could use some touching up.

obviously Starbreeze first developed the darkness exclusive for 360 but then later on decided to make a PS3 version as well. More choices for gamers, but big mistake I guess.

I'm really not that serious about it, but missing features still suck. I'll just choose to rent instead of buy. At least I'm not saying "I'LL NEVER PLAY THIS!!!!"

I watched some gameplay vids, and it shows the aiming dot jumping from its spot in the center to auto-aim at targets. I find this incredibly lame and am wondering if the game allows you turn off auto-aiming altogether? If so, is it hard to aim or something, kinda like Perfect Dark Zero where the controls always feel a bit "off"?

Only to really anal internet goers. Good for most gamers.

Wow dude, think you're laying on the damage control a little bit thick now or what? Poor Starbreeze, how dare people be disappointed in a lack of [pretty significant] features in one version of the game? As said, I had expected more from Starbreeze. In the future, I'll expect much less, but I'm sure that'd somehow offend you as well.

There's a slider for auto-aim, you can turn it off if you want.

Are there comics in the X360 version?

OK, I'm over the situation earlier. This game is really awesome thus far. :) At this point, I haven't played a better game in 2007 (though the rest of the year is loaded with goodness that will likely steal the crown).

There is actually a slider so you can adjust how much, if any, aim assist you want. Kind of nice IMO.

I actually leave it on the lowest possible setting without being off. At that point, it'll grab onto lights making them easier to shoot out which is a mega plus because at first you get so little ammo that wasting 2 or 3 bullets on a light that is a few feet away is not ideal at all.

I don't care about the AA, but the lack of blur is a real bummer. In the vids I've seen the game uses it frequently and it adds a lot to the games visual appeal.

BTW, when do you get to use the demo arm to pick up stuff like people/cars/etc.?

Right now I think all I can do is the Sneaking one. I've increased in Darkness level twice now, what does that exactly do?

AltogetherAndrews said:

exactly, in one version of the game! Why dont you get the other version then? It's not that it dont have it at all.

AltogetherAndrews said:

oh I wont, but it saddens me how some other companies will get away with worse stuff and not tarnish their reputation at all. It's a bit unfair.

BenjaminBirdie said:
I'd definitely like to know this. Not that I have a choice, but the feature sounded ill.
I've unlocked a ton of stuff. There are over 100 unlockables in the game. From videos, to concept art, to comics. Yep, the comics are in the 360 version for sure. I don't understand why the previous poster saw them all without unlocking them first? Or maybe he did unlock them and just didn't realize it?

You unlock stuff by calling the phone numbers on the "hidden message" things you pick up that are scattered throughout the world.

Also, i'm not sure if there actually is any PS3 specific bonus features. Does anyone remember the infamous "360 will have better textures because of pooled system/graphics RAM" interview? Didn't they say the PS3 would have more in-game movies and TV shows... but that's it?

I'll try and find a link.
