The Darkness: The Official Thread

I've unlocked a ton of stuff. There are over 100 unlockables in the game. From videos, to concept art, to comics. Yep, the comics are in the 360 version for sure. I don't understand why the previous poster saw them all without unlocking them first? Or maybe he did unlock them and just didn't realize it?

You unlock stuff by calling the phone numbers on the "hidden message" things you pick up that are scattered throughout the world.

Also, i'm not sure if there actually is any PS3 specific bonus features. Does anyone remember the infamous "360 will have better textures because of pooled system/graphics RAM" interview? Didn't they say the PS3 would have more in-game movies and TV shows... but that's it?

I'll try and find a link.

Sweet! I'll prolly have this by the end of the week.

Supposedly the 360 version was to feature richer textures while the PS3 version would receive higher quality in-game videos for the TV monitors.

Say what now? I was lead to believe there'd be an entire back catalog of comics. This is only true for the PS3 version? This makes me sad in my eye. Couldn't they have tossed in an extra content DVD with the 360-version? This smells lame and stupid.

I just checked comics are in the 360 version.

And the opening scene is ****ing insane!

EDIT: You do have to unlock the comics by finding them in the game.

Comics are in the 360 version read above. Looks to be unlockables.

exactly, in one version of the game! Why dont you get the other version then? It's not that it dont have it at all.

Some may not have that option. Me, I'd simply prefer playing it on PS3 over playing it on my 360, for a number of good reasons. I don't think I ever said that I wasn't going to get it at all (although recent gameplay videos have made me rethink what was once a certain purchase), but I also don't think it's unreasonable to be disappointed over issues like these. You really need to tone down the damage control.

Yeah, comics are 100% for sure in the 360 version. I'll snap a quick pick of one in a few minutes when the sun drops.

It's neat. You can zoom in and all that. Looks great in high-definition!

damage control? I am just defending something I think it is stupid to tarnish a reputation of a developer for.

People being dissapointed at Starbreeze over some AA, and not buying darkness as a consequence...wow, level down your console bias, stop being a cry baby, and think..."if there was no 360 version", because if you only have a Ps3 then there's no point in thinking about the 360 version.

And Santac, wtf with the halo 3 and shit. Man just go play the damn game or something, you are getting rediculous with how you are taking things about this game so personaly.

You have a X360. Get it for X360.

I prefer playing on X360, but if I still had both consoles and the PS3 version was better I wouldn't hesitate in picking up that version. And I wouldn't bitch and moan about how X360 got a "lousy version" on GAF.

Lol he "has" a 360. Riiight

Maybe to shit on.

Because if he does, all this fuss about what version is better is retarded. I bet if the Ps3 version was better he wouldn't say shit.

exactly. And how often are multiplatform games 100% identical. Is there even one example of that?

Again, I expected more from Starbreeze. These aren't minor issues. Apparently I had unrealistic expectations from a developer that I thought was better than this.

If it really is as small and silly complaint as you make it out to be, the reputation wouldn't be tarnished. If it is a bigger deal than you're willing to admit, then Starbreeze is tarnishing that reputation all by itself. I don't have shit to do with this.

PleoMax said:

Why would I complain if the PS3 version was better? I would understand if 360 fans were disappointed, but I already stated that I'd prefer playing it on my PS3 so obviously I'm disappointed that the PS3 version is lacking features.

Has anyone else been listening to the random conversations going on in non combat areas?

I just heard one with a a guy asking another guy if a Moose would have sex with him for 10 million dollars. I had to pause the game I was laughing so hard.

thekad said:
Um, why would you prefer to play it on the PS3?

Preferred controller, quieter and more reliable system. I'd like to save my 360 for 360 exclusives. Both of my two previous 360s died while playing 3rd party games, so I'm getting to be a bit superstitious here.

You have a 360 why do you prefer playing it on the PS3... I don't get it?( you answered it)

Just get the version thats better...If not, i just see you waisting the advantage of owning both systems. You get the multiplatform game on the system that displays it the best which according to quite a few people is the 360 version then on top of that you get Achievements.

AltogetherAndrews said:

That's the point, you wouldn't, because it's the system you have. And at the sametime, if it's the only system you have, then what's the difference if the Ps3 version lacks a super minor GFX effect that a certain version for a system you don't own has?

:)

Stop putting System Bias 1st and games second, it should be allways games 1st.

AA and motion blur, you honestly call that "super minor"? And as said earlier, I never once said I wasn't going to buy it due to these issues, merely that I was disappointed in Starbreeze for screwing this up. You're the one responsible for the overreaction here.

I can understand the quieter and more reliable system, but better controller? For FPS games?

okay so the truth is that Starbreeze said themselves this was the first time they worked with the PS3 hardware and it was tough but they learned a lot from it. As I said, they could have gone exclusive to 360 only, but hey I think it is a good thing to make a PS3 version. I do plan to pick up a PS3. Maybe you expected them to know everything about PS3 HW from the start?

Well it's gimped for one system because it's multiplatform. Obviously if he only owns a PS3 then he has to deal with it, but it's still an inferior version of the game. There is no other way to put it really. Yes it's still playable and most people won't even realize it, but it doesn't change the fact that its missing features for the reason that it's a multi plat game.

1) Preferred controller

I think everyone agrees that the 360 controller is better at least for shooters like The Darkness.

2) Quieter

That is a valid reason though I don't see how that would make you go on the campaign you have in this thread.

3) Reliable system

Okay, now I know you're just trolling. Third party games have nothing to do with your systems dying and you're not superstitious. Just leave this thread.

Personal preference, what can I say? Although this may just be because Resistance controlled so well, so maybe it sucks for other FPS.

Sure. I understand that, i just don't think it's a reason to troll, when if the opposite was true, then Starbreeze wouldn't have disappointed.

It's not a game changer, so i don't see the need to overreact, to the point of putting a once sure buy to a maybe. Sounds lame to me.

The other points are valid but I dont think we can tell HIM what controller HE prefers lol.

I have a 360 and a PS3 and I bought the PS3 version today. I'm one of the few who prefer the sixaxis over the 360 controllers, I don't have an elite so the other main reason for me to get the PS3 version was HDMI.. and well, the fact that it's my 3rd (and last if it breaks) 360 so I won't buy much stuff on 360.

MercuryLS said:

I also prefer the SIXAXIS. The light weight, the feel of the sticks, and the buttons just feel better to me for some reason. Both controllers rock for console FPS, though, so I can't really complain (I prefer both to the Wii-mote, which I really dislike for FPS).

What campaign? I said I was disappointed in Starbreeze, and that has somehow blossomed into this crap. And it sure as hell wasn't made that way by me.

Trolling? I didn't even bring this shit up in the first place. But since people seem so desperate to find out, I've already had two systems break down on me. Even if they hadn't broken down while playing 3rd party games, I'd still want to save the system for games that I could only get on 360, such as Halo 3 and the like. So if I get a chance I get to play multiplatform games on PS3, I'll take it. It's just a shame that Starbreeze couldn't get it working properly, and obviously I'm disappointed by that.

AltogetherAndrews said:

Well they said themselves that they're still learning to handle the PS3 hardware.

I don't, I have a slight to moderate preference for the SIXAXIS for all genres, depending. I guess I'm just one of those ppl who aren't bothered at all by having the left stick not directly above your thumb.

can we get back to the game now?

I can only go by what I've seen in trailers and other clips so far, so I'll just ask those who are currently playing it: do you feel a touch of uncanny valley while playing it? Looking at videos, the game world and even character models, that all seems great, but the animation of said characters seems to really clash with the realistic presentation. Is this really noticeable in-game?

Kabuki Waq said:
i honestly dont mind either of the controllers. Lets face it graphics are not hte problem here. Its AI, Level design, and controls IMO.

Ah yes. The GT video review shows a whole gang of mobsters standing still while firing away only a few feet away from the player. Is that type of behavior the norm?

no that is not the norm...most times they can see you through walls:lol but if you sneak or circle strafe you pretty much have them beat if you can deal with the loose controls.

Just out of curiosity, just for a moment consider WHAT IF Starbreeze was all like:

Guy a: "Hey guys, we can't get the AA+AF mojo working on the PS3."

Guy b: "Well it's working fine on the Xbox 360."

Guy a: "But once the almighty GAF notices the differences between the platforms, they will lynch us!"

Guy b: "Really?"

Guy a: "This is NeoGAF, dude."

Guy b: "Yeah, you are right. Let us remove AA+AF from the X360 version, so they will claim our developer superiority with our perfectly transparent cross-platform skillz."

So then they release it on the 360 without the AA+AF, which could have been possible, but they dont in favor of having identical versions.

Would we all be singing the praises of Starbreeze instead of ripping on them for the supposedly lesser PS3 version?

I'm not trying to change what controller you prefer. The positioning of the analog sticks lends itself to FPS.

AltogetherAndrews said:
So it's basically Far Cry style A.I. then?

they are a bit dumber in that if you do sneak up on them they sometimes will act like they did in the GT review. Also they cannot deal with strafing.

He definitely overreacted, but I can't say I'm not disappointed with it. I'm sure Starbreeze tried their best, but as a consumer - I'm paying for a product and I'm basing my view on the product off what I play and not what Starbreeze tried to do.

As a consumer that knows about both versions you should just take it as it is, both versions have their + and -. Ps3 does have more content.

Marty Chinn said:
Does the 360 have no movies or just not as many? Also are we talking like 8 vs 10 or 2 vs 20 type difference?

I know 360 has some but i dont know the ratio. Anyways PS3 version has Jaggies and looks jerky at times compared to videos i guess due to lack of blur. But other than that performace wise i see no issue with the game. Loading times between subways is pretty awful on both versions.

360 version has a smoothness to it that ps3 version does not.

^^^

I've already stated my concerns. My 360 is dying, so I'd like to try to save it until I can play Bioshock and Halo 3. I think that's understandable. So, I'd rather pick up the PS3 version. But PS3 version lacks graphical features that, IMO and the opinion of my wallet, should be there. No sale. Pretty simple. I just did rent it though, so I'll give it a run through.
