The Darkness: The Official Thread

you also need to stop wrecking havoc in this thread going off topic which fps controller is better, talking about resistance etc. Geez...

wreaking Havoc? Fact is there is no excuse for the game to look worse on ps3 other than shoddy programming.

as this should have been instead of being neutered. You really need to stop defending the Game that you have not played at all this is bordering on Viral marketing.

Your friend worked on the game so you will defend it without even playing it?

That's the thing here. Judging by reactions from SantaC here, you'd think I had flat out stated that Starbreeze sucked and that I hoped everyone at the company would get herpes, whereas what I really said was that I was disappointed, and that disappointment subsequently makes me think less of the company. As it should be; my expectations of the company were too high, so now I'll lower said expectations. That's it, that's all there is to it. Personal attachment can really make mountains out of molehills, good grief.

fine it is shoddy programming, happy now? I said numerous times SB admitted not being experienced enough with PS3 HW. I am done arguing here.

I mean they should have built this game from the ground up for each platform or just keep it as an exclusive instead of releasing a game lacking in polish containing certain mediocre gameplay elements.

the thing is, is that they DID build this game from the ground up for BOTH PLATFORMS (or so they've stated)....one of the devs is quoted as calling themselves "insane" for doing it like this, instead of just porting one to the other platform..

Its when we started to see ABSOLUTELY NO PS3 FOOTAGE (at least no one outside the press), is when I started to get very apprehensive about what was going on with the ps3 version's development and which version people should consider picking up on launch day....I'm not saying that the No MB/AA is the REAL why the public hadn't seen the PS3 sku, but there is room to speculate....
It is sad the thread has kinda degraded into this and hope we can all move on though....

I still <3 you Starbreeze! :)

Are the graphical differences really that bad? I wanted to get this for the PS3 for some of the same reasons as AltogetherAndrews but if the graphical differences is that poor than I will probably have to pick up the 360 version.

your mileage may very, but for me, motion blur IS a big deal....it ****ing made so much of Lost Planet's visuals for me (one of my fav games so far this gen), as did AA

Honestly I can't see the opening sequence being the same without rumble and motion blur, my mouth was on the ****ing floor the whole time.

Ain't happening. I'm not going to pay MS for a refurb. I'll let it RIP when it goes. I'll buy another one when they get things under control with the failure rate and a lower price.

Or when it dies you can fix it yourself. Probably be more reliable than whatever MS does.

I didn't think motion blur was that big a deal...but after seeing the GT vid review...yeah, it really, really does.

I guess I'll be picking up Vegas PS3 this Friday until I see some real PS3 footage (or when the game gets a bit cheaper). I still want to experience the Darkness, but I'd be lying if this didn't put a damper for us PS3-only owners. Ah well.

how the eff do i get off the couch? i dont want to cuddle with jenny any more, i want to get my kill on!

Press A, homey. Or X, if there is no motion blur applied to the cuddling.

I totally hacked the phone and discovered a secret code. 555-1234. It unlocked something. Not sure exactly what, though.

Yeah, anyways, awesome game with an extra-large order of awesome on the side. I <3 Starbreeze.

And oh yeah, stop ****ing up this thread with the bullshit or I'm gonna putting hexes on people. So before you make that next dumb comment, ask yourself-- "do I really want a hex put on me?"

BTW, when do you get to use the demo arm to pick up stuff like people/cars/etc.?

Right now I think all I can do is the Sneaking one. I've increased in Darkness level twice now, what does that exactly do?

when you get to hell level, which by the way I really didn't care for

Increasing the darkness level unlocks new abilities and darklings to use. I have all of the abilities right now, and the demon arm is wicked. I like picking up dumpster and just throwing them at people.

god damn 360 version. i finally start getting into the movie (scout is so darned cute) then the damn screen shuits off 10 minutes in. blueray for the win?

and i'm starring at jenny and no options pop up. x or a doesnt do anything. hitting lb gives me the darkness voice telling me its not a good time to go buck wild. halp

I put the 1234 number in too :D

I also put in 6666 (mark of the devil + an extra 6) and it did nothing :(

Same here dude. The demon arm makes the game so much more fun, I wish they gave you that off the start.

1. It's only 4 digits.
2. Im sure NO ONE has tried 1234 yet.

Can someone answer my questions a couple pages back..

isnt Vegas also way better on 360?

...some more impressions of 360 version.....load times ARE better than PS3....at least when I tried just creating a LAN match

...critics are retarded, as this game feels EXCELLENT to control....both 360 and PS3

Yeah the controls seemed perfectly fine to me too, the creeping dark are a bit annoying to control and that's about it.

QFT. I'm a motion blur whore (Lost Planet anyone?) and it was slathered on in the intro sequence, which should just about blow any first-time viewer away. It was that awesome.

Anyway, I didn't have time to read the responses to my question before I took off but I'm glad I got the 360 version if only for the motion blur alone.

Still iffy on the controls of the game. Has a Riddick feel, which is fine, I guess... but what's up with the lack of a cover system or some sort of new mechanic to make the gunplay more compelling?

Admittedly, I have not gotten my powers yet so maybe shooting isn't really the point of this game.

Wow, that's awesome. I can't tell from the vids, but then again I can't see any HD stuff from my work comp. I have the 360 version waiting for me regardless, but that's pretty amazing to hear because LP had some film quality stuff.

This will probably return to being a good thread again in a couple of pages whenever everyone has figured out which version to buy and stops bitching about motion blur. :)

Second mention of LP. There's motion blur, and then there's LP motion blur. Is this LP quality motion blur?

It doesn't have huge montion blured explosions but its used on the edges of the screen during movement and the whole screen blurs nicely when you spin around quickly. It's a great effect and without it the game would look a bit plain IMO. I'm very impressed with the graphics overall, it's very polished and the atmosphere is awesome.

I concur and retract my previous statement about it being LP quality...its not...but it is good none the less :)

Does the interaction with NPCs feel reasonably natural?

Hit and miss. Most of the NPC's will ignore you. There's the whole, I'm walking and you are in my way thing going on. The major NPC's, however, do react very nicely. You can move around and they will follow you naturally, first with their eyes and then by shifting their bodies if you stray out of view. The voice acting is top notch. Very similar to Riddick here.

Just got through
the orphanage. Holy crap at the cutscene at the end!

So far, I'm absolutely loving it. Yes it does have flaws (alittle AI issues, controls could be tighter, etc), but the game as a whole is very fun and really atmospheric. Living near New York, its really cool to see the little touches in the subway with the graffiti and such. Loving the phone collectibles too. Can't wait to play more.

There are plenty of NPC's that say "are you good?", "is everything good?", "are we cool?" when you go up to them and press A. The NPC's you do missions for are well acted with great voice action some some solid "digital performances". The camera pans out so you see par of Jackie's head and most of the NPC from the midsection up. Its basically like the NPC interaction found in Riddick with more involving performances, there was one performance that really stood out for me but I can't say who it was otherwise I'll spoil part of the story.

The best part about this game is the atmosphere, its got bucket loads of it, enough for 10 games.

That's hilarious.

Now I'm waiting for my copy. Gamefly shipped it today.

Early impressions:

- Controls are a little meh...he does move very sluggish.
- Graphics are nice, but nothing crazy good yet. Or even great. The intro was hot though.
- Zooming up on Jackie's mouth while he talks was a bad move as he barely moves his lips at all and it looks bad.
- Gunplay is cool so far, I hope I get the hook power thing because shooting out lights is getting old already. =P
- Oozes atmosphere. Easily the game's best attribute in the early goings.

Had to take a short break, but I'll dive back in a pair of headphones for more soon.
