The Darkness: The Official Thread

So is it something I should buy, or something I should rent? I understand it's rather short and the MP is not quite all that, but is the game itself something you see yourself playing through many times?

Honestly, having put over 12 hours into the story so far and roughly 60% complete, it's really not that short in relation to some other titles. If you treat it like a linear affair, you'll get exactly that, an 8 hour storyline. However, if you give yourself some time to explore, do some side missions and really take in the atmosphere (like you should be doing) you'll definitely enjoy it more.

side mission help

looking for the second hit for mortarello on grinder's lane. killed everyone in sight (2-3 people iirc). any ideas?

The game is good but not great by any means.

Single-player is fun. Multi-player isn't even worth looking at.

a 7.8/10 is probably the right score for this game.

I'm glad more people a waking up and smelling the coffee.

The gametrailers review is right on money when they mention the flaws.

It's a okay game not great like you said, id rate it a 7/7.5.

Well I sure hope it sells as well as Forza Che.

I hope so too, Dan.

Sorry if I'm coming across as overly negative but these are just my honest impressions. I suppose after Riddick, my expectation for Starbreeze was through the roof, especially since they'd be on more powerful hardware.

So far, this game has yet to surpass Riddick on almost any level, aside from obviously better graphics. Butcher Bay oozed atmosphere, incredible voice acting and cutscenes, some of the best graphics on Xbox, and innovative FPS gameplay on so many different levels, including the first FPS hand-to-hand combat system that wasn't instantly a steaming pile of crap.

Who knows, maybe I'll warm up to The Darkness. I can definitely see how others could dig the hell out of this game, though. Especially if they've never played Riddick.

Does anyone know if the whole movie of To Kill a Mockingbird is actually in-game? I remember when I was
in the room with the girlfriend, the movie came on and I let it sit for over 10 minutes and it kept playing on the TV. That'd be kinda cool if the whole movie could be watched
. I'm really loving the amount of detail in this game so far.

I couldn't find RS:Vegas, so I picked it up. First half hour is fine, not blown away or anything. The lurchy, kinda clumsy controls are a definite throwback to Riddick alright.

EDIT: I just tried online for the first time. Uhm... yeah. :lol I guess "unplayable" is the best single word to describe it at this point. I'm not sure if there's a good MP core there to wait for patching to reveal or not, I guess we'll find out.

Like it or not that was kind of deliberate.
I know. I just wish that there was more of an emphasis on the Darkness powers. They wanted you to have a choice. But there's really hardly any incentive to use them other than puzzle solving and just to do something different.

I agree completely, but I also can't stop playing the game. It's not as good as Riddick, but unique enough on the console to keep me playing it pretty steady. Still one of my favorite games this year. Playing the 360 version here.

Fair enough. It's interesting to me that lot of the criticisms people are raising were deliberate design decisions. Anyway I love Riddick too so if we're even in the same ballpark I'll be happy.

You're going to have to explain this...how exactly would the CPU (Cell) assist with motion blurring? MB (as I understand it) is a GPU/memory function...

Cell can do everything bro. Haven't you heard?

The design is so good. You guys ****in' rule. The game reminds me of Riddick in terms of the visceral thrills, but it also made me think of Indigo Prophecy's sophisticated story telling and Condemned's great atmosphere. Still it seems like it's entirely its own beast and overall something that only Starbreeze could do... like Starbreeze upped their game yet another notch and it really shows. Being an overly critical asshole most of the time, I find it a little surprising that I have no complaints. There's nothing I would say "that needs to be changed" or "this isn't quite up to par." I'd say this is just about as good as a game can get.

Gamespot says... 8.5

The Good

* Amazing voice work and dialogue set the mood right out of the gate
* Stunning graphics, both technically and artistically
* Darkness powers are a lot of fun to use again and again
* Compelling, well-told story
* Can press a button to devour human hearts.

The Bad

* Most of the conventional weapons are useless
* Enemy reactions and artificial intelligence feel a little too passive at times
* Multiplayer feels a little tacked-on.

Actually the next-gen Madden's have that as an underlying feature, it's called "buy the game that devours the hearts of football fans."

I'm not a dev ... well, I'm not a game dev :p ... but I recall some devs talking about using CELL for MB.

I'm not familiar with how this is accomplished though.

I may be losing my mind, but I thought this was discussed before.

Onix, motion blur is on all the time in the 360 version, not just when you use tentacles.

Really?

For some reason I only recall seeing during the tentacle stuff. I'll admit, it's been a little while since I watched the videos.

"The Darkness is available on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, and the differences between the two versions are pretty minimal. The PlayStation 3 version seems to have slightly better color than the 360 version, but the 360 version looks a bit sharper. Also, the Xbox 360 version has achievements, and the PlayStation 3 version gives you the same tasks, but calls them accomplishments. Regardless of what you call them, they're evenly spread, with a few that come from winning more multiplayer matches than you'll probably be willing to endure. Overall, both versions are equally recommendable."

Ugh, I'm still on the fence about which version to get :(

Oh and it looks like IGN are the first to break out the comparison videos. Sadly for Insiders only:

AAAAHHHHHHH, DAMMITTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!

God, you people are weird. The difference is negligible. We're talking motion blur or AA, not framerate or gameplay differences. Buy it.

Well, if you have both systems, might as well get the best one even if the differences are minor.

I really need to see a decent comparison before deciding which to buy...of course, I don't need it enough to pay for Insider.

Wow. This is a hell of good comparison. It goes into painstaking detail about the differences with both games running on top of one another like the two games were humping.

Oh #2... Didn't notice that GameSpot have both 360 and PS3 screenies, just a little erm comparison. Obviously they're taken from very different environments, with different lighting but that's not what I'm interested in. Since the hand position is identical in both versions, it's easy to get a direct comparison for resolution and other slight changes in textures:

How? The lighting in both manages to obscure pretty much all the detail in two different extremes. One is muddy because it's dark, one is washed out because it's bright.

I have both systems and I have the right to purchase the version I feel is the best. The best way is vid comparisons.

Pay particular attention to the thumb and the pager logo. If GameSpot haven't screwed up their captuing, that's not just a lack of MSAA, it's being upscaled from a lower resolution.

JB1981 purchased both editions, and he told me that the PS3 version Menus and Screen text all looked to be running in an SD resolution.

So I LOVED Riddick but haven't gotten this one yet. I think I may just have to give it a shot.

Can I ask what the POINT of the game is? I've no experience with the comics and backstory.

Whenever there's a game that everyone is buying (like the Darkness), I always choose the one everyone's not buying.

Psychonauts, DK Jungle Beat, and now Overlord.

Cool. I'll be over here, playing the game. Lemme know when you figure out which one has the best durp mapping or whatever.

Gist of it is that PS3 has more jaggies, some more framerate drops, the video is pretty low-res but you can see more jaggies in the PS3 version.

just watched it too....pretty much what he said and no motion blur as expected....

Are they testing both versions at the same resolution? Does the 360 version let you choose in-game what resolution you want to play it at?
