The Darkness: The Official Thread

I've been taking my time playing through the game and finally spent some time in the otherworld last night. I'm not sure I understand all of the complaints, really. I found nothing confusing about it. In fact, I was expecting the entire area to be exclusively trenches and open fields...but there is much more to it than that. I like it.

I really hated it when
you had to go to the hill and find the demon weapons. Every lightning strike drained the darkness and left you vulnerable. And for some reason you were surrounded by demons. Frustrating. Took me a while to figure out to just follow the dark skid mark.

On EGM Live, Donahoe said that all the side quests were hard to do becuase you didnt know where to go, which in fact is false. You objective log tells you where to go, and you can go to the information kiosk to ask where the area is and how to get to it.

I think part of the issue is that gamers are so used to being led around by the nose. I like the way SBZ has handled to navigation. It's much more immersive to have a character weave in where you need to go in dialog and find your way as you would in real life. Character interaction, kiosks, subway and street signs. These are all more interesting then a lighted path or a map with explicit point a to point b navigation markings.

But I can see how the spoonfed would be a little put off and if I'm being perfectly honest, I fell prey to it myself before I figured out what SBZ had done. After that, it's been smooth sailing.

This is more an action/adventure game with shooting then I would say it's a straight FPS. The exploration is really fun for me.

I didn't find that to be the case at all. I enjoyed exploring...

Me, too, though it takes me forever because I obsessively look for the collectibles. Maybe it will get better as I revisit areas and don't spend 10 minutes in each one scouring the area for an f'n slip of paper...

For those playing the PS3 version, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a Must Buy, how would you rate The Darkness as a purchase? Would you say renting is the better option? Would you play it again and again?

That's amazing. I think his voice has woken up my neighbors more than once. I altered the LFE settings so that when you hear the Darkness, you FEEL the Darkness :D

Just curious as to what are your LFE settings. The wife is leaving town this weekend and I want to crank my surround sound. :P I've been dying to crank this game up all week.

I gotta say I'm really loving the atmosphere in the game. I haven't taken this much time to just stop and look at the scenery and NPCs since Half-life 2, I think. Bummer that its only like that in the non-action type areas and not in the city as well, as they really feel disjointed.

The bar/pool hall in particular was cool, especially right when you leave and you go into the alley way with the bum, the atmosphere there was amazing.

I give it a 7.5.

I would probably replay it just to get all the extras I may have missed. Definitely something a comic book fan would like.

I have to say, I can't count the number of times I've said out loud 'WOW, how freaking cool is that!' when the Darkness whispers something to Jackie. The Darkness' voice work is one of the best in any game.

Yeah, especially considering it wasn't digitally altered, right? I'm pretty sure I remember reading that. I told that to my roommate and he wasn't impressed, what a dick.

I must also express appreciation for the loading screens. It's been mentioned many times before, but the execution is brilliant. I find myself looking forward to loading screens rather than dreading them. If you can't stream and entire game world ala Gears of War, this is the next best solution. Obviously, it wouldn't work with every game (Half-Life 2, for instance), but it certainly adds a lot to the experience here.

BTW, I just got the demon arm. AWESOME. Totally changes the way I play. I'm totally getting what the 1UP reviewer said when he said just as you really feel like you're mastering or comfortable with your current powers, you get new ones, and then it's like a new game again.

Denogg, I would probably give it an 8.25.

It's really amazing how I've never heard of this comic before. :D

more of them would have been great. it seems they did just enough for a playthrough strictly following the main story. if you venture between areas cause your lost/exploring/doing side quests, they repeat. if i have to hear about abdul the cab driver one more time...

"O" or I think "B" skips those scenes

So picked this up today and its blowing me away.

I was playing for a while in voice chat trying to describe it to a friend.

It has feelings of Half-Life 2, Condemned, Ridick. Fresh Gunplay, a totally cinematic experiance.

I loved getting the Romance achievement so many nice little touches that are so neatly tied into the game and story.

At first I got on the wrong train and got a bit lost till I worked out I have to listen and having the ability to check the map, the journal or the tourist info signs is great it really added to me the sense of understanding the scale and layout of the world instead of ignoring it and using a mini map crutch.

Some things annoy me a little like controlling the little dark snake which can now be awkward (know what you mean Baka) and at first I was confused at the whole gun and dark powers selection, reloading, health etc as Im conditioned for a HUD but after a while you learn how much you can take etc so it feels a little more visceral and your not gauge watching.

Ive had one big sitting and Im up to
My GF getting kidnapped
but guess I have plenty more to look forward to.

Just wanted to pop in to say, this game frickin rawks so far!!! Love the story, the graphics, the sound....controls could use a little work (i set the auto aim off). But overall I'm loving it so far. The loading scenes are brilliant .

Doesn't address the final hit. I went through there, but didn't see anybody to take out. He's noted as being up high, so I checked the rooftops and found nothing. I gotta think he's in an open window, ready to be eated by my hungry, hungry tentacles.

I was stuck here for a while as well. The guy you need to kill is
near the old man who lets you up to the police officer's place. Just before you get to the door leading to the old man, there is the word "mace" in graffiti on a wall. Directly above the graffiti is an open window where the target is. There's also a Darkling outfit in there.

That guy is a complete idiot. You can tell by just listening to him he didn't even really pay attention to the game. I'll never take another word he says seriously.

Just got it on my 360. Does this game have a unique atmosphere or what? I wanted to create a big impressions post, as I really love this game, from it's great detaled graphics, to amazing scenario and story telling. Sadly, new HS media sucked it all out off me.

I didn't finish it, so I won't tell whether it's better than Riddick, but it sure seems so.

Find the basketball court and go up that street theres an alley way to your right you will hear her shout to you just go to that building.

I'm just getting started so I just hit that point as well. It was funny because I had just gotten my powers and I was strutting around town...tentacles a flailing...shooting people...eating hearts....spawning bezerkers. Having a good time. Then I hear her yelling and I was like "Oh shit!" and ducked around a a coner. I clicked LB to put away my "Darkness powers". I was afraid she was going to see me. :lol

Thanks! I probably wandered through that area for 45min looking for that guy.

one of my good friends got the game and was just telling me he had to stop at a certain point (yeah, THAT point) as emotionally it was just to much for him. after discussing this with him for a bit, i came to the conclusion that that is one of the very best things the darkness achieved and largely responsible for my immense enjoyment of the game, the emotions it can envoke while playing (from dread, shock, horror, to even touching bits). any game that can get such strong emotional responses gets an automatic A+ from me.

When you got to dial the phone, move the analog sticks around. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but you can crouch during a call and the result is that Jackie will sort of float upward slowly for the duration of the call. Nudge the right stick just before the camera shifts and you can get a view from inside Jackie's cranium, complete with a view of the back of his eyeballs.

Either that or the mushrooms kicked in early last night.

If it's the point I'm thinking of,
Jenny getting her brains blown out
I had actually read about it happening in the comic. The game does an incredible job of fleshing it out, it really affected me more when I saw it in the game.

Hey all
guys i got a question for anyone whos played both versions.
So best buy here in canada has a deal where if you buy the darkness ps3 for 64.99 you can get resistance for 20$. Now i already have resistance , so i would be trading it in at ebgames for 44$. So basically i would be getting about 20$ off the darkness, after taxes.

Now i have both 360 and ps3 , and i do realize that 9/10s the time the 360 version is unfortunately superior.

Ive been hearing about choppy framerates and less motion blur.

So my question is :

is it worth the extra 15-20$ to get the 360 version over the ps3 one?

Thanks

thats the one.
just the way they built up that whole scene, from the dread of finding out she was kidnapped, to the haunting burnt out orphanage. the way the masterfully reinforced your connection and attachment to jenny with all those ghosts/flashbacks to your childhood really made that scene, and your unableness to stop it, really really powerful
. great job starbreeze.

The frame rate has been solid in the PS3 version. There are minor graphical differences like the motion blur but not something I would spend $20 more on. The PS3 version has better sound and more videos on the in-game TV. Otherwise everything is the same.

All opinions about the controller/console aside: If the prices of the game were equal, I would go with the 360 version.

The PS3 version has poorer AA and motion blur, but the game content is the same. There are also some framey spots.

I think it's your call whether or not those defects are worth a twenty spot for you. Personally, I think I'd be saving some dough, but that's just me.

That was an insanely powerful scene, especially after it was setup by the GREAT couch scene.
It's definitely the saddest video game moment I've experienced in years :(
.

Its a good game, but its not as seamless as it should be. Especially in the beginning, from the opening seen to the title screen it seemed a little broken. Some aspects are well done, while others are the exact opposite. For example, character models look very nice and their animations from the neck down are nice too, but the facial animation is almost non-existent. A game with this much dialog should have been much better in that area.

just got this game... wowowow i love it. There needs to be more games like these.

Kinda reminds me of condemned too which isnt a bad thing.

ok, now that im deeper int his game and spent some good time with it, i like it alot. its fun as hell, presentation is superb and the killing is enjoyable.

ahhh, some of you bastards are picky as hell...enjoy it!

Wow, just rented this on PS3 (was all rented out on 360, so owning both platforms has its perks :) ) This game wreaks of cool, and it rubs me the same way max payne did back in the day. It just shows you what a little extra effort on presentation, sound design, and voice acting can do. If this game maintains its pace and atmosphere throughout the rest of the game, i'm going to have say this is my sure favourite so far of the year.
