The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

Got this from Redbox last night.

Have it installed(360). It is running silky smooth. Thing the game looks amazing, especially compared to Oblivion. Did not even really notice any stutter during the beginning sequence.

I don't have any of the patches installed though, which I assume is a bad idea.

Disabling all auto-saves and deleting all my old saves really seems to have helped on PS3. It's not perfect, I still have to have a break after every few dungeons... which I should probably do anyway.

same here, though i'm starting to get texture issues with my save file nearing 8 megs.

Here's my crappy PS3 lag/stutter video. Sorry for the quality...just mute it.

I bet you testers played through the game like that and didn't consider it an issue. My brother recently got an Apple TV and installed XBMC on it, but non-h264 HD videos are very stuttery on it. According to him though, it plays those videos perfectly fine.

Some people just have different standards I guess.

Been playing since launch on my jasper 360 and it runs like a champion. I had installed it at first, but then un-installed after reading reports of downgraded textures here. Killed my first dragon last night - exhilarating!!

Well I was 15 hours into the PS3 version, no problems at all. Then I booted it up today and my house walls were missing, I had infinite Magica, and bears would randomly appear three feet in front of me.

That and all the PS3 save problems scared me enough to sell the PS3 version and head into the PC version. Guess I should be bummed that I lost all that progress...but I'm not. This game is just that awesome.

I've been sticking with two save files and it's been running pretty well since. My save files are around 8MB. I still see the occasional low res texture, but no where near I was having before I did this.

How this even effects anything is beyond me. Seriously what the fuck.

Definitely. Especially since their initial response to the complaints was basically to deny anything was wrong. If the gaming media keeps discussing the problems, they will eventually fix it.

Games media will talk about it until it starts cutting into their all-important game of the year bullshit.

which, "niggles aside," Skyrim will win plenty of. :- |

So I'm still running the game off the disc. Is there anyway to get it to run better on the 360? Clearing the cache? Disabling autosaves? Deleting old saves and using new ones (christ I remember doing that in Oblivion).

People are having issues with performance on the 360 as well? I am about 45 hours in and am running it off the disk with no issues at all. Runs smooth as can be.

I get a stutter here and there and theres a shit ton of tearing. That's kind of par for normal with 360 bethesda games. I was just wondering if ayone has kept a truckload of saves or done something different.

It's no PS3 situation mind you.

45+ hours, 8 megabyte save file. since turning autosaves off and deleting them, i haven't had any unplayable framedrops. they're definitely still there after hours of gameplay, though.

oh, and even though i turned every method of autosaving off, the game still autosaved twice for no reason whatsover. but only in a specific dungeon. was kinda weird.

I think it does that before certain bosses or temporary points of no return.

I have 50 hours, froze 6 times, had texture bug both installed and running off disk, some screen tearing. Still think this will win most GOTY awards, I have been running more problem free since reinstalling on usb and deleting my 45+ saves down to 3, but that could be just luck. Some reasons I might of had problems also I think is because I was playing mostly 3rd person with a companion and played long times without break.

According to Bethesda (or at least one of their forum admins), don't clear the cache and don't play any other games (which would cut into Skyrim's store on the cache). The more the game caches over time, the better it will look and play, apparently. The game looks crappy when installed because the cache is not being utilized correctly — although some people claim they're still getting low rez textures even when playing off the disc, not clearing cache, etc. So I have no fucking idea.

People keep mentioning how their saves are building up — does the game automatically save multiple files or are you just keeping backups of your previous saves?

Have people encountered the thing that happened (to me) in the Fallout games where the more you progressed the game the longer and longer the load times got irrespective of cache or not ?

Got the PS3 version last night, and played for about 4 hrs.

Opening sequences stalled
when I got off the wagon. It was really strange they called the name of Garof or whatever his name is, but he never moved. I could even still control the camera, but he just stayed there
. Waited 10 minutes and reset. No problem the second time. The intro level didn't seem very jittery, but something did seem to smooth out once the game opened up. Menus aren't any slower than they were in Oblivion. Lighting does seem to turn on or off suddenly when moving around outside. Otherwise it's fine.

30 hours in on the PS3 version, I'm now starting to get weird bugs related to quests. Either I can't complete quests because the person I need to talk to doesn't acknowledge them, or a quest I know I was supposed to be given doesn't even show up in my list. ARGH

The game has been crashing for me when I fast travel. It's done it about 3 times. All within a day or so.

Has this happened to anyone else on the 360 version?

Answering my own question from before incase this may help someone.

Ps3 version, 25 hours in, 5.5mb save file.

I had the stutter (still do) but framerate wise it was ok. Unfortunately almost everything in game had turned into low res textures. Super low res. Id heard people talk about clearing the cache, which i read elsewhere meant:

Go into the internet browser, goto tools, clear cache.

As barmy as that seems, once id done that, the next time i booted up skyrim the crap textures were all gone! So, i can only assume that means the cache for the browser is the same one used for the games!

Who knows. Anyway, hope this helps someone.

Now im just hoping the patch comes before i hit the savefile framerate slideshow of death!

Are load times improved when playing installed to a USB drive, or are they the same as playing off the disc?

I believe they are somewhat improved, and installing to a thumb drive seems to avoid the texture problem entirely. It is definitely the way to go until the patch is out.

Note to developers:

Play your game on your own personal systems at home and beat it before you ship it.

Note to managers of the developers:

Tell your developers to play their god damn game before you ship it.

Note to publishers:

Put in the contract somewhere that the game must be played through at least one time before they ship it. Just one time. Just one measly time.

Thank you!

Ah finally. The iPhone GAF app works again.

Anyway, I ordered parts for my new rig. My crappy laptop that I've had for four years died. I should have everything by Wednesday.

My rig consists of:

i5 2500K (probably gonna overclock it @ 3.8)
(x2) GTX 560s (1GB each) ( my mobo supports SLI, so if course these bad boys are getting bridged.
16GB RAM
1 TB HDD (will get a SSD at some point)

I was wonderinf if I will be able to run my CPU at a higher speed. I'll have air cooling, which is why I'm hesitant about making it 4.0 or higher. Oh and going with 750w PSU as well.

Lastly, Skyrim supports SLI, but hiw is it? For those who a dual card setup, how is performance and how well optimized is it?

PS3 user here. I've played this game 43 hours now, and I've had to constantly delete my install file and reinstall it (this does work for a while, usually 3+ hours). I hope this gets patched or fixed somehow. =/ The lag is so ridiculous if you don't clear the cache.

My save is well over 11mb now and towns are starting to chop like a MOTHERfucker. I am extremely annoyed. I'm scared to go back to my house in Whiterun, that town just chokes. We're talking Perfect Dark 64 4-player splitscreen with max sims and explosive weapons only shit right here.

I was thinking this bug wouldn't affect me, but it happened already. Its very bad in the larger towns, and I just noticed that when I use a shout, the frames start to drop and the game chokes for a second. Really, I can't use a shout without the game choking on me, I mean c'mon! Ofcourse PS3 version here.

Most of the time, these developers are putting 100+ hour weeks into the game as development nears up. They don't spend much time at home.

That's why they have testers. Testers play through the games. Betheseda even publicized the results of their speed run competition. One dude beat this game in like 2.5 hours. Other people prioritize bugs to get the game out the door in as good a shape as possible.

It's still not enough. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/11/03/081103fa_fact_bissell

New Yorker said:
Testing is among the more consuming aspects of modern game design. I was told that Gears 2 would be subject to roughly forty thousand hours of testing before its release. This is an impressive number—until one realizes that the first forty thousand people who buy and play Gears 2 will, in one hour, equal that amount of testing.

This is not to excuse what is going on here.
