The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

It may be a time of day thing. Also, that person is a bit closer to the camera.

I think he was thinking of the HUD/text. The texts and boxes are bigger on PS3, which means bigger pixels, which means lower resolution.

Bethesda saying there is a texture issue, but it's not caused by an HDD install.

I haven't seen it with it installed yet, so I guess that makes sense. So many people only saw it after they installed it, though...at least they're looking into it.
Interesting...

The suggested fix there is to install it to a USB stick, which is what I would do on my 360 anyway. (4GB slim with a 16GB USB stick.)

Admittedly, PS3 is my console of choice though so if they are close in quality PS3 would be tempting... I have the 360 version on pre-order because I figured it would be the better version by default.

this is not haha worthy

or relevant to anything

oh and LA should be breaking street date in a couple of hours, like always. going with ps3 version based on impressions in this topic.

I had a similar experience with Mass Effect in regards to the texture issue. It was a Live GoD purchase and it was noticeable after a while but in the end it got pretty bad and IIRC sometimes the textures wouldn't pop in at all.

I have large hands and the dualshock 3 is quite comfortable in my hands.

I don't get it?

I went with the 360 version(preordered) even though everything that video seems to favor the PS3 version. If I run into the texture problem and there is not a fix within a week I just trade it in for PS3 copy.

Bethesda is saying it has nothing to do with an HDD install but are looking into the problem.

Sigh, how long has this game been in dev? Ridiculous it has this problem and they're "looking into it." What a damn disappointment.

Half of me is sad that I'm not getting the game for 360 until Christmas at the earliest.

Half of me is super glad that I'm not getting the game for 360 until Christmas at the earliest.

Ok, let's just get one thing straight. Elder Scrolls game are CHOCK-FULL of graphical glitches; ESPECIALLY on consoles. Are they game-breaking?... NO
t yet
!

The game is humongous. Let's just live with the bugs and enjoy the game for the enormity and scale :)

I've been watching the GiantBomb Live stream (360 Version); and it runs fine. Gregg seems to be impressed with the visuals and admits they will, of course, be better on PC. I have my second monitor muted so not sure if he ever explained if he installed it or else.

He has been playing for hours now and I have not seen any major slowdowns--other than load screens, which to me is important when moving around a World this large. The PS3 version seems to have more performance issues--based on gamer's feedback over the Beth Official forums.

I really hope they find an answer to the textures issue. It seems ridiculous at this point. Locally, I will give them the benefit that the street day is tomorrow and they still have time to find a fix for it.

They have stated that they are looking into it and I am sure they will; their forum is plagued with people complaining and asking for a fix for it.

*That 3.8GB Mega compression Idea seems to be coming back to bite them. I will never understand why they did that... my common sense, especially after playing games like Rage, Mass Effect and others that make use of greater space, cannot understand how a game this big ended up using so little space without sacrificing performance or visuals.

Anyways, it is still playable... let us hope they can fix it via patch.

I am going to stick with the X360 version, midnite cannot come sooner.

Waiting for digitalfoundry's comprehensive face-off, I highly doubt that the video in OP used the texture bugged Xbox 360 build to compare.

Digital-Hero said:
My assumption is that it won't. They more than likely cut back due to the DVD format itself.
Considering that the PC version is about 6 gigabytes, I doubt the problem is due to disk space.

edit: Oh, that was an old post.

i want to wait but Kmart's deal ends this week.........boooooooo.

Over fours hours with the 360 version installed to the HDD and the game looks fantastic. No texture issue yet.

Is there a certain action that commonly triggers it?
Six hours now, still nothing.

Good to hear. How did you get the game early?
Good friend at Gamestop. I don't really know what I'm doing, I have a copy coming tomorrow from Amazon and I'll probably be double dipping on the PC version a few months from now. Guess I'll just return one :lol

I just saw a table that looked ugly as sin...don't know what that means yet, everything else looks normal.

you are running off the disk correct? or did you install it?

Installed to the HDD. Also cleared the cache before booting it up.

Walking on eggshells at the moment after seeing that table...

man WTF.. I have a 360 copy coming and I am wondering If I should wait to open it.

Reading through this thread I still have no idea which version to pick up! I'll just take my bets and pick up the PS3 version since I like trophies I guess.

I've been playing installed and uninstalled and can see dodgy textures everywhere.

What type of Xbox do you have? I'm not sure if you have the means but some users are saying they have gotten rid of the problem by installing to a thumb drive (probably a wild goose chase).

I'm starting to regret getting ordering the 360 version.

I'm glad Bethesda has acknowledged the 360 textures issue. Seems weird that they say it has nothing to do with an install, though, considering people have done A-B testing and seem to think that it IS the issue (although I guess not enough people have the game yet to really narrow it down).

I wonder if 360 model/disc drive makes a difference? Possibility incompatibility of some drives with the new disc format? Some don't seem to like the discs so much, regardless of Microsoft's testing.

Well, Bethesda has already said they're looking into it. The issue is definitely there. If you feel it'd bother you then I would wait. Some comparisons I've seen were minimal, but others have looked pretty ugly.

Oh, I've seen a few as well, but nothing as widespread as what some people are experiencing.

*the jinx is inevitable at this point :lol*

I've played... Heck, at least twenty hours by now, I think, and I haven't experienced any texture issues apart from when I installed it to my HDD. I'll try installing it again tomorrow, but the game looks fine and is smooth as hell, even running from the disc. It froze up on me maybe three times during loading screens, but coming from New Vegas, that's practically nothing.

But seriously guys, this texture thing is nothing. If you're gonna wait to play this game because of something as small and insignificant as that, it's your loss, really. I've had moments where I was playing and I was amazed at what the old 360 can still pump out.

Dammit Bethesda... Now I don't know what platform to get it on.

Slim 250GB.

It's not bad, the game is still beautiful, so when you see a messed up texture it really sticks out.

Still, judging by the screenshots above, I'd say the the 360 version is better than the PS3 version.

I've come across barely any dodgy textures, and definitely nothing that killed the game for me.

Looking at more and more screens it seems the resolution on the PS3 is coming into question for me. I am seeing lower resolution textures, shadows, and text as well as more jaggies on the PS3. 360 has a pretty bad texture loading issue, so the decision is pretty difficult between the versions.

I guess I'll wait for DF since screens aren't adequate enough for this test.

It's highly likely the texture problems will be fixed as soon as possible, so it's not really a big deal IMO. Going with either version seems like a safe choice.

*reads thread*

Hmmm it seems we're in desperate need of a new generation of consoles. No wonder MS is gunning for holiday 2012.

This game =/= most games.

Only a few hours left! Which to choose!?

I wouldn't exactly say desperate. I've been pretty pleased, hell, more than pleased with most stuff I've run on my triple/360.

Still, I wouldn't mind new tech come next holiday but I'm not clamoring for it.

Doesn't clearing the cache erase all updates to games, where you have to redownload them or is that wrong?

Stood in the store for 30 minutes trying to decide whether to get the PC version or the PS3 version. Went with the PS3 so I don't have to drag my PC and hook it to the TV each time but these low-res reports are a bit disturbing.

Before this we had Crysis 2 that barely ran, Battlefield 3 is capped to 32 players and has smaller maps on consoles and heavy framedrops in the latest and greatest titles are not uncommon. Now not all of these issues will be resolved by new hardware but it's pretty obvious that we've pretty much reached the limit of the current machines.

Anyone been watching the Giantbomb stream? I've seemed to notice some pretty bad textures even through the poor quality. Pretty concerning, but hopefully it's an easy fix.

I installed it to the HDD on my 360 too, and I'm seeing really bad textures all over the place. I thought the game just looked terrible before I saw this thread.

Here's an image I just took on my 4S, no way are these properly loaded textures:

I very rarely pre-order games and when I do it's because I've got a ton of store credit, etc. But the few times I have pre-ordered multi-platform games I pick a platform based on what I thought it would be a slam-dunk win for it in the comparisons. And then the day before the game comes out I find out there is some kind of problem with the one I ordered. Oh well, I'll probably be happy with the 360 version anyway, if Oblivion is any indication.

I bought Oblivion on 360 at launch, then when the PS3 version finally came out it was slightly better port so I bought that. Then the GOTY version came out with all the DLC and I ended up buying it on 360 again because I found I just didn't enjoy using the PS3 controller for that game.

So here's hoping they patch that shit on 360, but it still kind of stinks.
