The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

Bethesda CONFIRMS texture issue on 360.

Play it UNINSTALLED folks!

"Skyrim uses a lot of dynamic streaming systems, including textures. We've seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up. We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed). Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it. We're working on a solution in the next title update for those who have installed the game."

Will you stop fucking trolling?
Well Bethesda did say they were going to fix the texture loading problem, I have not heard them say anything about fixing the ps3 problems.

I beat Fallout New Vegas 2 times on PS3 even though the game was nearly unplayable. The framerate was pathetic, and just walking across the wastelands would make the game stutter nearly ever 10 seconds.

Anyone that played Fallout New Vegas knows exactly what I am talking about if they played it on PS3.

So, how does Skyrimm run on the PS3 compared to Fallout New Vegas?

I'm actually buying both versions. 360 version for my brother for Christmas (who I gave my 360 to) and PS3 version for myself. For similar reasons we have both 360 and PS3 Oblivion. Truth be told I prefer the PS3 Oblivion... I know that may sound odd, but I felt like everything was too "glowy" on the 360 and the characters looked like they were made from plastic.

Good to hear. Still not really noticing much with it installed personally, but I've seen a few things that have really jumped out.

Much better to hear that than "Uh, what problem? It looks the same to us".

True, but I'm wondering how the QA team didn't notice and/or address this issue before today. But whatever, it's a Bethesda game and we should all have expected some bugs. It's certainly not going to stop me from playing all weekend.

So, when for once I'm getting a 360 version of something it turns out possibly worse. Oh well.

Technically it's rather poor, but I don't mind it. There are some stunning places regardless. The only thing I'm really annoyed with is how horrible snow looks on the ground or on walls.

I won't bother to switch to the PS3 version. If I return to the game later on with a better computer I might rebuy it there, but for now I'm fine with this.

Ugh, got a freeze in the intro sequence following the guard with the sword. Had to restart from right after character creation. 360 version. Off to a good start!

Bah that sucks don't want to put a lot of strain on my 360 so I install all my games, also still does not explain why people are also running into the problem playing from disc, guess installing makes it more likely to happen.

Any tips for the combat? Because i feel like i suck and there's not much to the combat mechanics.

Just block, shield bash, slash, repeat?

Any way to get vibration with a 360 controller? settings have vibration, but I thought 360 pad for PC didn't suport vibration.

Hadn't really noticed much at all and hadn't thought about this until I ran across this thread. Been playing for a few hours, but did notice something a bit off in the starting sequence. Wasn't sure if that was meant to be or not. May just uninstall and wait for patch to reinstall. Normally play nothing off the disc, but may give it shot. Hopefully quick on the patch.

Edit: Hmm yea didn't think I was much of an issue until I unistalled and saw the light heh. Massive difference. Will keep uninstalled until patch.

Not sure, you might want to post this in the PC performance thread.

360 version:

1. 3 hours in and first freeze.

2. Installed to USB and no problems with textures.

Other than the freeze everything has been smooth. Now I go back and hunt some elk.

Sounds about right. Oblivion caused my 360 (two different units) to crash more than any other game ever. Just like old times!

Might be wrong, but from a quick glance it looks like the PS3 version has V-sync enabled and thus drops frames more often. The 360 version seems to be the only one tearing in that video.

I've noticed this as well playing the PS3 version. It definitely seems as though v-sync is enabled as the frame rate can get quite low and there seems to be zero tearing.

I think I quite like it the way it is but I'm only about 2 hours in so maybe that'll change over time.

Gonna pick up the 360 version, but just took a look at the vid posted earlier.

Just check the groundtextures at 0.26 min.

Mmmm....now not so sure anymore

As I posted before, there is something completely wrong with the PS3 version shown there. Mine is as detailed as the 360 and PC versions shown.

That comparison video is simply not valid in my opinion. My PS3 version has NO blurry anything that is shown in this video. Especially the ground textures.

I think that pretty mcuh confirmed now,I wonder why is that?
My guess is they worked on that last and it wasn't optimized as much as the open world is. Just a guess. Honestly, they game looks and runs pretty damn good. It's by far the best running Bethesda game on PS3.

I'm most likely getting the PS3 version but I have a question. Can I install the game on a 4 gig usb FD if I were to get the 360 version?

Blowing my mind that PS3 version looks to be the better choice ....at least for me. I'll take subHD w/Triple Buffered Vsync over any tear-fest.

Depends...the game requires 3.8GB and I don't know about most drives but my Sandisk 4GB only has something like 3.74GB available. Go with 8GB to be sure.

360 players, how bad is the screen tearing?
It's only bad when stuff is going on. But if you don't like tearing it will piss you off. I'm trading mine in for the PS3 version tomorrow. (never thought I'd be saying that) game is miles ahead of oblivion though looks awesome.

iirc during the first mins of Fallout 3 -on PS3- the game installs some more stuff to the HDD while it's running, maybe it's the same thing here?

So I just got my 360 version. I've been reading here that install or no install the texture problem will show up, so I guess I might as well install to the HDD?(primarily for faster loading)

I believe it happens on either, but it's less frequent if you run from the disc. Possible optimization issue when running from an HDD. (Disc layout, file sizes etc)

I just wanted to add that I have the PS3 version, and it seems totally fine so far.

Any issues will surely be patched so I think it's okay to get it for whatever system you prefer.

Thank you. Tearing is the only graphical flaw that bothers me these days.

Agreed. Can't believe it's nearly 2012 and still: screen-tearing. Really, devs?

PS3 version: I got a temporary freeze (about 5 seconds) during the intro right before the beheading. No other issues during the intro and I haven't wandered into the world yet.

It's not subHD. At least the people at B3D don't think so. Apparently it uses one of those AA algorithmns that softens the image. Which sucks but I guess it could be considered a step up since previous Bethesda PS3 releases didn't have any AA at all.

Also I read the AA gets dropped on PS3 ver with fire effects and the X360 version doesn't have any AA on water surfaces. Probably due to quirks in each systems architecture.

No tearing is a big plus, as long as the frame rate holds up.

This generation is awesome, because a game doesn't have to be finished in order to ship!

Release date fast approaching? No problem!

My thoughts exactly. I understand that games have become far more intricate in design compared to last generation, however, Bethesda's track record of shipping games with major bugs is a true headache.

Buying these games are like buying a beta product. That said all is well if you have internet connection or have your console connected to it, in which case all that is asked to spend is time and bandwidth. However, there are many who don't either have internet connectivity because of myriad reasons (I seldom connect to XBL because I slowly stopped playing MP modes of various games over the last 2 years). To these folks... well you know the story.

Oh ok I wonder can it be fixed, sounds like a bug or something.

PS3: 10 second freeze after I exited the wagon during the intro because the game was auto-saving for the first time. Almost 2 hours in now and no problems at all.

PS3 version here, other than the tutorial section in the beginning, it runs well and looks great.

It may be sub-HD but if it is, it's not that bad. I just read the post where someone said it might just be an AA filter which makes sense.

The lighting looks off on the PS3 version, a little oversaturated and less subtle than in the 360/PC versions. I want to see more about that (and the resolution) before I jump in.
