The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

With the game off it says: "Searching for The Evil Within process, please configure desired settings and launch the game."

With the game started it says: "Configuring"

Nothing happens though, the letterbox stays, the FOV doesn't change.

edit: Actually I got this while trying it just now:

The Evil Within - Path= (32bit)
Base Address=0x0, Process ID=5000, Version=Unknown
Resolution=1920x1080, Aspect=1.778, Monitors=1x1, Bezel Comp=False - (\\.\NVDisplay on GeForce GTX 780)

Anyone have any idea what that means?

Using Flawless Widescreen and just started the game. It was super easy and works perfectly. Noticed a little bit of texture pop-in during cutscenes but running with everything maxed at 1080P and getting a fairly consistent 60 FPS.

Game looks great and I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far.

Why didn't mine work perfectly ._. dammit!

Mine works, though of course I don't get anywhere near 60fps (gtx 670)

You tried leaving it default and also adding the exact location of your Steam installation, right? (I'm asking because maybe the tool behaves differently for each system, and in your case it could need to have the Steam path set up manually)

Did that, didn't work either.

Does Flawless uncap FPS?

What kind of rig do you have that can run this game at a fairly consistent 60fps?

Hey dude- I had the same issue as you yesterday. I finally got it working today. This is what I did- click on 'Check or update' in FWS. Clicking this, I found out that my FWS program was 1) Using x32 instead of X64 2) My TEW plug in was 1 day outdated.

Works like a charm after it got updated

Whats your rig? My 780 TIs cant even get 60 on 1080p :(

I've someone mention that performance seem to be largely dependent on the CPU...I wonder if my Sandy Bridge has a factor in the performance.

My performance was acceptable a few hours ago, now it's terrible no matter what I do. In the Chapter 3 village before I got 30 FPS indoors and outdoors it'd be 30 with dips to ~25 with corrected FOV/aspect ratio. Now indoors is 30 with frequent dips to ~25 and outdoors is more like 24 FPS with dips to ~18 even without corrected FOV/aspect ratio. Even the save room dips to low 20s now. I have a GTX 580 (1.5GB VRAM) and an i7-875k @ 3.5GHz (with HT enabled), GPU usage is only at around 60%. I've closed everything that doesn't need to be running in task manager and restarted my PC a few times and my temperatures are fine. Any ideas? On the brink of just waiting about a year and playing this at locked 60.

Thats just how the game runs with FOV fixes. In Chapter 3/4 ist runs at 30-40fps with the FOV Fix and I have a Xeon/GTX770 Combo.
For example the room where you meet the fat doctor I get 45fps with black bars.
People are smoking the good stuff when saying the game runs 60fps all the time with a 2500k and GTX 680. Indoors yes ... when you test it in the first chapters without FOV fixes. But not outdoors in some later chapters. I get 50fps indoors with FOV fixes so ...

TL;DR Your PC is just too slow for max details, fov fix and 60fps

It ran well with the FOV fix before, now it runs terribly even without it.

what is well for you? because I always assume that is 60fps and more^^ And I noticed some chapters are very weird performance wise. Even when nothing is going on the FPS drop by 10-15 frames in a room.

It was 30 with some infrequent dips to mid 20s, now it's mid 20s with dips to the teens.

Hmm that's a little low, with or without FOV fixes, when you look at benchmarks with the 580. Then again I don't know how well the 875k runs with the game. It seems like haswell is running a lot better than older Intel CPUs. Could be something about streaming assets in outdoor environments and some weird hiccups from the game.

I love you. Well Try tonight.

Just tried it out.

Framerate was really bad, music kept cutting in and out, graphics were poor and after closing it, all my programs had locked up. Oh and the black bars are not artistic. They're pretty annoying and I was only a few minutes in.

Welp.

edit: oh and lip syncing was completely off. Not sure my files are messed up

Anyone having crashes at the end of chapters verify the game cache files on Steam. My game crashed when I went from chapter 7 to 8 and doing that fixed it. Only downloaded 16kb, but looks like that was it.

Intel i7 4770K @ 4.5 Ghz, MSI NVIDIA GTX 770 OC 4 GB, 16 GB RAM

Having played through nearly 4 chapters now, when monitoring it's mostly 50-60 with some dips into the upper 40s. It never feels choppy or unplayable and it's nothing like the dips I saw on supergreatfriend's playthrough on a GTX 970, where frames would literally freeze up at times. Maybe I just avoided those areas playing naturally as I haven't been trying to stare into any bonfires or anything. It's not a soild 60 and I would not call the performance good, especially considering my components, but it's fairly unnoticeable as long as I'm not monitoring.

My wife is on an older setup (AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @ 4.2Ghz, GTX 670 OC 4 GB, 16 GB RAM) and is getting around 40-50 FPS with everything maxed. Her frames fluctuate depending on the area but no major noticeable freezing, stutters, or dips.

So FlawlessWideScreen is a legit fix?

Has your experience of the game without the blackbars been more enjoyable?
I'm reluctant to try to play the game with it, afraid it might break the experience somewhat

I can't play without this fix anymore. Especially the FOV. The game is so much improved this way. I could even get a pseudo Resident Evil 4 aiming.

Is there any way to remove the button prompts and pop ups that show you if an item is nearby or if is a door is locked (and mission objectives pop ups if there are any)? Won't be able to play the game until next week. Sorry if this has been asked before.

I finally got it to work today and I can't see myself playing without it now. It's so much better.

Yes, you can turn off the hud and button prompts in the options.

As long as you use the FOV fix, it's a huge improvement. The cinematic excuse is bullshit.

To add to this, the HUD elements are set to hide automatically when there is no activity by default.

I prefer those elements not being there at all (like in REmake). There is way too much stuff like that cluttering up the screen in modern games. I'm very appreciative of the fact that some game developers are still willing to give us an option to completely remove it.

Excellent! Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't think I'd want to turn them off. Especially the burn bodies prompt. Some of the action sequences become pretty intense later on and I want that burn prompt as soon as possible. I can see it being frustrating without it.

Thanks for the fix headsup, guys. I installed it this morning and tried it out. I'm usually a purest when it comes to this stuff but man, this makes a pretty big difference.

On a slightly related note, I"m in Chapter 7 and enjoying the fuck out of this game. Each chapter really has it's own ideas, tone, and proof of concepts. It's like a series of mini-horror games in that regards and really neat. I look forward to seeing what each chapter brings.

Ok, the game is playable now that I reinstalled it.

I just got this weird graphical glitch, anyone else got this:

80131BBAA0EB160F2E8C497B7A8CE801C50BCB8E

B4A7E3999E9A4BA596328BA601BF74ECAD41BB24

PC Specs:

AMD 1055T OCed at 3.4 GHZ.
MSI R9 290 3 GB
8 GB RAM
Catalyst driver 14.9
No mods/console commands used
Settings at max at 1080p with MLAA used
No FPS overlay softwares running in background.

What may be the issue?

Are most of you just leaving the FOV slider alone in Flawless Widescreen?

I've only ever played the game with this fix so I'm wondering whether pushing the FOV up from neutral will be detrimental to the game.

I think the only issue with going higher is the lantern light glare is really distracting, and if you go much higher it will be in the frame all the time.

hey guys I get this really annoying error, "The Evil Within has Stopped Working" as soon as I kill the chainsaw guy in the barn.. It happens every time, consistently, as soon as I kill him. Looked everywhere online but can't find anything to resolve this issue..

anyone have any ideas on things I can try to fix this ? this shit is getting old

I have a Gtx 660 and an AMD fx 6300 and I cannot get this game to run at 30 fps even at extremely low resolutions with all effects disabled.

I've updated drivers and even overclocked the processor and graphics card.

I found a video on youtube Evil Within of a guy having similar specs and he is able to run it flawlessly.

I don't know where the problem lies as shadows of mordor runs perfectly.

Anyone know of or are working on overlay/texture replacements to accommodate flawless fullscreen? For example, making the sniper scope, menu, and screen effects full screen rather than limited to the borders of the default aspect ratio?

Flawless Widescreen is perfect.

The game is sooo much better now without the bars and the FOV fix.

That whole cinematic view thing is pure crap. I personally think they just wanted to improve performance on the consoles by not having to render extra things in the environment.

They didn't get rid of it on PC because they wanted parity and didn't want to make the PC look better...

At least that's what I think...
