GB crew is great, but really makes me wonder how some of them ever got jobs playing video games.
Seriously, this video made me wonder how Brad actually got a job reviewing games when he just isn't that good at them.

I'd rather have some be a better writer than be a better player.
Definitely. As far as I'm aware, Brad is the only english major among them so his skills are undoubtedly needed. Anyways, the whole "Brad sucks at games" thing has always been overblown imo as he is still quite competent, and its been suggested that he only "pulls a Brad" when taped. And its not like being a master at videogames is the most important aspect of reviewing.

Yeah everyone knows you need to be super good at games to review them. Are we really having this discussion again?

These people get their jobs because of their writing and ability to critique games not because they good at games.

You don't need to be good at games to have fun with them so why should you need to be to form an opinion for a review?

Pretty much. I'd pick the GB crew over any other one out there.

I've never got irritated by a Quick Look before but for gods sake stop running and shoot the damn things!
If only you could RUN and SHOOT at the same time. But wait, this is Resident Evil we're talking about. Got to be ridiculous like that. :lol

There are already plenty of ways to watch videos of people with serious skills clear levels perfectly, or clear games in speed runs, or whatever. Giantbomb's quicklooks tends to excel at both being entertaining and giving a more accurate impression of what it's like to play a new game that you probably wouldn't be the master of either in your first half hour or so of game time.

Also consider that these guys like games enough that they probably would be really good at them...

If they weren't so busy constantly writing about them. Playing games and then writing about them might be their jobs, but a good 99% of the games they write about, they play them for only two or three weeks before moving on to the next one. Most of the games you hear them talk about on the podcast in extended sessions are RPGs like Fallout, Fable, and even then, that's mostly from guys like Vinny - who is extremely thorough with games he plays in his spare time.

So a lot of them are competent enough (but not spectacular) at a lot of games.

Because he's one of the best writers in the industry. That's why he got a job writing about games.

Did Jeff just say, between the lines, that we are getting an endurance run of Deadly Premonition?

On tuesday I'll have FFXIII in one hand and the Bombcast in the other

FFXIII goes in the trash until the Bombcast is over!! Can't wait to see what special guests the bring on for GDC.

Holy shit i think that's exactly it! hopefully they are allowed to do one because you know the game has just come out i think. Anyway a new ER!

Although....I'm not sure if they'd really be able to do a full endurance run. Maybe an extended couple looks at it, but wouldn't they have to get the cooperation of the publisher to do an entire video runthrough?

I'd be surprised if the publisher gives a shit at this point :lol

Wow

If that's the case maybe this shit-talking is unwarranted. That game was balls hard.

Can someone explain to me what is so great about Deadly Premonition? I've seen lots of people wanting to see the quick look and now it looks like there might be an endurance run for it but I honestly never heard of the game until last weeks I love Mondays when they mentioned it.

Yeah but then you get stuff like the Endurance Run where 50 hours later they're still staring at fusing menus and going "huh," (because they never once selected the "talk" option in the room they spent at least 20 hours of real world time in) or using up weeks worth of free days near the end of the game by running into the beef bowl place to slightly raise a single personality stat.

It's Street Fighter: The Movie levels of crap, apparently.

I think the point is that Deadly Premonition doesn't look great, it looks God-awful. Therefore it's perfect for a Quick Look/Endurance Run.

So? An Endurance Run where stuff goes wrong is far, far more interesting to me than a perfect run where the players know everything. I watched the Persona 4 ER for Jeff & Vinny's commentary, not to see a the game played to completion perfectly.

I don't believe anyone said anything about wanting things to go perfectly or wanting the players to know everything.

I hope anyone interested in actually playing Deadly Premonition knows that the strength of the experience is the progression of the story and the characters' dialogue. (It's really a modern graphic adventure game with some action-horror gameplay.) Watching it played through would most certainly spoil the full experience. That said, I'd love to see an extended look at the game (since I already finished it)...I'm sure it'll be slammed and roasted to hell...hopefully only for those things that deserve the real criticisms, though. Too bad most people will simply go off of some videos, screenshots, or some rather terrible reviews and decide that it's some sort of objectively bad game somehow rationalized to being a good one...it's actually a good, but mildly flawed game with an excellent story-focused action-adventure element that is fueled by its love of Twin Peaks, pop culture in general, and a lot of crazy Japanese sensibilities. If you like memorable stories and characters in games, DP is worth the trip.

They still made it to the end of the game well enough. It might not have been a textbook playthrough of Persona 4, but they did what they set out to do. They are only human - and over the course of playing Persona 4 they probably played through 20-30 other games. When you consider that at some point they started recording almost two weeks worth of Endurance Run in a single day (Jeff mentioned coming in at 8am, start playing Persona 4 with Vinny, and not leaving until after 8pm, still playing Persona) it's no wonder they seemed kind of lost at times.

It's one thing to play a few games here and there casually, it's another thing when you're staring down and endless list of games and you have to complete each one in a week or less so you can write something about it and move on to the next.

Haha. It seems like it would have the net effect of increasing sales.

I know the last one made me buy P4.
It made a lot of people buy P4.
It also made a ton of people aware of the Megaten series, which is always a good thing.

Looking forward to a new endurance run. I'm currently re-watching the second one on my way into college in the mornings.

Maybe if enough people complain about the GB crew's lack of skill, they'll hire someone like wendel to review games.

cop on people :D

An Endurance run? An Endurance run of a Japanese game? An An Endurance run of a crazy Japanese game?! YES!

If this turns out to be just a long quick look, man, biggest disappointment ever.:lol

If it's the case that Deadly Premonition is getting an endurance run, I'll be super stoked since I'll have a chance to play along. I am still catching up on the first run and loving it, and Deadly Premonition does look genuinely interesting.

Think that'd be great for an extended run/quick look. All I've heard of the game is that it's bat shit insane and fully aware of it.
