The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

Are there any other sites like Giant Bomb that does the Quick Look type of feature? I know there's ton's of Let's Play's out there but I'm not really looking for that.

I'm not sure I'd be happy even if I found a site that did the same thing since I think it's more the hosts chemistry that causes me to enjoy the videos than anything.

1up has their Game Night videos which are kind of similar, but way less enjoyable.

Don't forget the audio quality. I don't think I've ever seen one of those game night things where the audio quality wasn't absolutely horrific. :/

Well, they have ads on the site now. Banners and preroll video ads.

They also used to have a page up where there was pricing options for game developers/publishers to sponsor Quicklooks and Podcasts. If you see a Quick Look EX, it was most likely sponsored. The same goes for any non-tuesday podcast that features a chat with a developer about one specific game.

Some of those ads on the site like the full skins cost like $50,000 too so one skin(like ODST) is some peoples year salary.

Gametrailers have an occasional feature they stream the first hour of a new game when it comes out, but they only do it for the 'big' releases not all sorts of games like Giant Bomb. I've never actually watched one of these so I can't speak for their quality though.

This is a weird question but how do these guys make money? I take it it's from advertising but...

The news came out today on PE Hub that we received an investment of $2.5 million. This investment round reflects a true family and close friends round, and we are grateful to have these folks continue to encourage and back us.

This round of funding will provide us the capital to launch more sites and hire more great people. The last two years have been an absolute blast, and we are even more excited about our next phase. We believe that we are at the center of a new wave of publishing that is socially-centered, and is also in the truest sense authentic to its category.

We believe that the media brands we have developed with our “Whiskey Powered” process and technology platform will truly change how we all enjoy media, and we’re looking forward to going to even more categories we love next year. It looks to be a great time.
+ they have adds but they choose like penny arcade, they do not want just google adds on there because it does not work if you want to have a "real" company.

WM = heads of ex cnet and they know like NO others how to set up a internet company and do well, look at how cnet has grown in 15 years.
You have to give them time, there traffic is up 200% since they started and members + viewers keep coming in.
They will be just fine and, and in no time you can't go around them anymore they will become the new "gamespot" like they where a few years back.[/quote]

I love the fact that Jeff has an entire room in the game dedicated to nothing but Jungler cabinets. :lol

He didn't want to disappoint regular bombcast listeners, i guess. :lol

All the infrastructure and metagaming around game room is pretty awesome. i love the challenges and the replays and cabinet art and all that stuff that surrounds the games.

but i have around negative 100 interest in the current games. I'm relatively old (31) but I have no nostalgia for games from the early 80s.

but once the game room builds up the collection to stuff from the mid to late 80s and early 90s.

WATCH OUT!

That type of setup could be a killer app, system seller for various old school hardcore types.

Yeah the setup is nice but just like you I have no interest in these games. I just can#t find the fun in most of this old stuff.

I know Jeff is a man who has spent an absurd amount of money on many absurd video game related purchases...but 90 dollars on game room games is. Well. Yeah.

It makes the Star Trek Online lifetime subscription look damned sensible in comparison.
It's his job.

This is not even close to true.

Developers come to visit us to show off games on a semi-regular basis. When they're OK with us taking our own video of the game, we record their demo and run it as a QLEX. When they're great interview subjects with more to talk about than the game they're currently promoting, we consider doing a separate podcast.

We're not in the business of running deceptive ads and never will be.

Shaun (sp?), one of the dudes who works at WM. I think he was the one who played the Bioshock 2 LP backwards in that mailbag video.

Ah, OK. I heard them call him Shaun/Sean, but I'd never heard of him before. Surprised they didn't get Jared, he was fun on the Jackie Chan QL.

I was content with what I got out of the QL since it had people of equal skill playing against one another. If Jared had stepped in that bowl he would have been far superior (as he probably remembers what motions do what, for a start) and then the live stream would probably have demanded that Jared show the finicky shit that SRK and the oily thread here on gaf cares about, but means jack to the average giantbomb user. Much more entertaining to watch people of equal skill, even if I would notice mistakes and lack of knowledge/skill.

I guess that's true. I just like watching the Ultras tbh, don't play much SF, so I guess that would have been bad to watch.

Watch the final making a bomb video under features. He's in it and damned tall.

You might not be running deceptive ads for video game companies, but you will never be able to convince me that your site isn't just a grand plot to advance the cause of the international taurine conglomerates.

It's a cover. They're really just selling bubblegum and firecrackers in the back.

well in the quicklook, a number of cabinets didn't even have the proper art, or any at all, which is just lazy. If they're going to charge $3 for some of this old shit, at least put some effort into it.
