The nazis barely used the undercut, if at all. Most photos show a side part with a low to mid fade. The top usually is not disconnected either. There is more length on top than the sides, but it is visually very different from an undercut.
The disconnected undercut predates the nazis, and can be viewed in photos of 1920's - 1930's american men, though many people feel it was heavily influenced by the french. At those points, some men did in fact cut the side length below enough for a part.

I realize I just posted a bunch of attractive people, but the point is that the cut actually looks sharp on anyone who doesn't have a weird head. Your face doesn't even have to be that great.
I've always called that hair style 'nazi hair'. And I only started noticing that style every where once Boardwalk Empire started and Jimmy had that kind of hair. I majorly dislike it.
There is no universally best haircut. Some styles just fit different faces and builds better than others.

I had a disconnected undercut in the early 90's(with the top very long). I don't mind how popular it is because it's a look that does flatter a lot of people. You can always do something unique with the top. I tried growing the Nazareth a few years back since I had it during my twenties but it just looked weird on me now so I went with the undercut and have kept it for awhile now.
