The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Carbine fires projectiles. You have to reload it. It's not plasma. :)

no its still an energy weapon, the only covenant projectile weapons are the brute weapons and the needler. they dont even call them projectile weapons in the books or games.

Does not matter what is is classified as, it still registers headshots. In fact I think it only takes 5-6 shots to the head to kill with the carbine.

well thats true but the rifle only takes three. trust me ive been killed enough by it to know. however the carbine is better at range than the BR.

I've read the manual. You should too. ;)

Covenant Carbine
Rare Covenant projectile-firing rifle, a powerful,
stocky weapon, and fitted with magnifying scope.
Fires single rounds with high degree of accuracy
and power. In some ways its technology mimics
Covenant Fuel Rod Gun, although obviously on
a smaller scale, but offers similar penetration to
UNSC Battle Rifle.

The carbine to me still works like a plazma rifle, it will do good shield damage but when its down to killing someone without a shield it takes a few hits or at least 2 headshots.

I feel the same, i have been 3-shotted with the BR on a number of occasions, even from distance, yet i can aim at the head (as best i can :p) and shoot 7-8 times before they drop. Yesterday i had a few occasions where i shot a person standing still multiple times in the head, on one occasion 6-7 times (without any lag that i noticed), before they died, what gives?

Same thing with the carbine. Yes it's possible that i am just missing, but when the target is stationary and i don't move my xhair from their head, and they still take 6+ shots to go down (from medium range)? It's weird.
BR kills in 4 shots minimum. Range doesn't have anything to do with how fast a Carbine will kill you. It takes 5 shots(anywhere) to drop there shields then one final shot to the head to kill. Same with the BR. 3 shots anywhere, could be the left buttcheek, then one final burst to the head for a kill.

Aiming to the head(with the BR) for the initial 3 shots isn't always the best idea. The bullets are in a random 3-shot spread pattern and the head is a small target. On a moving target it could be only 1 or 2 bullets from the burst hitting them. That just means you have to hit them more times. I out BR a lot of people and I usually shoot my first 3 shots at shoulder height where the widest target is and then move up to the head for the last 1-2 shots. The only time I don't do this is in FFA or when I know that the person is wounded. Hope this helps.

Interesting. I never thought of it that way...makes sense though, because I always point at the head and sometimes I'm not able to kill them before they kill me. This explains why. I'll try this tactic next time, thanks.

Wow, I've just met some "pros" who killed their own teammates for grabbing the Sniper and the Warthog. And some guy who killed our flag carrier just before he scored so that he would get the medal...

I hate XBL.

Did they say something like, "Ha ha! You got owned, kid. Go suck my ****, nub"?

with both the BR and the Carbine I think of it as working my way up the body to the headshot when the shield drops. but absolutely aim for the body first, it's a far bigger target and it makes no difference where you hit until the shield is down.

If I ever take the Banshee, My own team Pod Rockets Me out of the sky, and camps waiting for it to return. That's why I've been vetoing Valhalla on BTB

Play with friends, if not, add some GAF'ers like myself, who won't betray you for a weapon.

Damn that's lame, did you file a complaint?

I've been betrayed for:
Getting the Sniper Rifle.
Walking towards the banshee
Getting in the Warthog.

Also, A guy once drove up to me in a warthog, so I got in the turret, then he started screaming at me to be his driver. When I wouldn't he started shooting me, so I got in the driver seat and drove off before he could get in.

there's an article up on bungie.net about audio, here's some interesting tidbits.

C Paul Johnson, our Audio Design Engineer is having a bad day – his computer is failing him and he’s buried in making noises (C Paul spends a lot of his time making the sounds that tickle your ears in Halo). Weinland told Marty O’Donnell that C Paul was “grumpy” that morning, only to hear C Paul bark “I’m am not!” from his office. If C Paul is grumpy, and we're not saying he is, he probably has good reason to be. Audio is one of the last pieces of to get put into a video game. Why? Because these guys could spend their time working on the sounds for a particular feature, only to hear the stale thud of that feature ending up on the cutting room floor. The final months of development on a project are the busiest for Bungie’s audio team. “Basically, we work on whatever is shipping next,” C Paul says.

The music in Halo 3 operates similarly to how it did in its predecessors, Marty explains. For example there are some pieces of music designated as “glue.” The glue consists of smaller pieces called “ins,” “loops,” and “outs” – these aren’t complete songs, not like those you’d hear on an official soundtrack. Instead, think of them as branches of a tree, interconnected but still individual.

Working side by side with the mission designers, Marty plans triggers that will begin and end these pieces of music. The trigger could be something as simple as when a player steps out into a sun-baked vista - a theme fades in. However, once the music starts it doesn’t just play a single song and cut out. An intro segment piece triggers in the mission and then a separate trigger cues the piece to move to an outro or an “alt” (an alternate version of the piece to act as more “glue”). What Marty played for me, the first piece from Halo 3 to tickle the studio’s ears, was a serene chorus of voices, still cooing, oscillating and shifting, music that could be the soundtrack to an ethereal foreign landscape. Twenty-seven seconds later the piece faded to silence.

yeah i've had that happen to me for having the sniper rifle, but i've seen crap like that happen even on games on PSN. i just wish there was a way to punish people more for doing that. a complaint on XBL is useless as it just knocks their rep down and makes them an avoided player.

ie banned from playing with the person that left the feedback ever again. I wouldn't call that useless.

Overall, they aren't going ot be banned for a few negative feedbacks, but what it will do it draw attention to them. So when they receive a certain number of negative feedback action will be taken.

edit:
..and since we're on the subject of the feedback system. I just checked my gamer rep (first time I've looked at it since 360 launch):

88% Preferred you or did not submit a review.
12% Avoided you.

Details:
Communications:
-Trash talk 0%
-Language 0%
-Distruptive 0%

Behavior:
-Aggressive 50%
-Unsporting 0%
-Quit Early 0%

Considering the rest of the feedback breakdown, I don't even know what that means. Other than, "He kills me too much, so I don't want to play with him again."

lawl.

The Door Opening sound in the article sounds like the Highground gate.

there's always so much intense action going on around me when the gate opens, I haven't heard the sound it makes when it opens once.

Sounds like the gate though.

I've been having quite the time trying to get into matchmade games as of last night. I'm usually good for the first game but soon after I'll get dumped into a game where I am the only player. It has been about every other game for me. Extremely frustrating.

Double Team Arrives, Ranked Big Team Goes Live
Posted by lukems at 5/28/2007 11:23 AM PDT
Last week we ushered Big Team Training into the fold and this week we're launching a ranked version of Big Team action. Additionally, we've added a nouveau classique to the Matchmaking Playlist -- Double Team Training. In Double Team Training, players will pair off and square off in 2v2 games of the Slayer and Skirmish variety. In case you've lost track of the Playlists during the truffle shuffle of adjustments and tweaks we've been making, here's the current breakdown:

Social Matches

* Big Team Training
* Double Team Training
* Team Training

Ranked Matches

* Team Slayer
* Big Team Battle
* Team Skirmish

SCHWANG!

Guys PLEASE add me, GT: das chew

i hate the beta because all I play with are idiots, and everyone on my list is never online. I NEED to play with some good players, I haven't even used my mic yet!

Woo! Ranked Big Team is awesome, awesome is Big Team ranked.

I'll try it out later tonight.

That article on the audio was excellent. A good mix of vignettes in the Studio and detail on the methodology. Digging the door sound (it's NOT the High Ground gate, which is louder, creakier and longer).

They can't maintain too many lists due to population size, and Bungie probably wants lots of data to test the new play lists - thus, no Rumble.

If there realy is no more rumble you have to remember you are playing a beta, they need whatever data is required to be farmed, maybe it will return.

Bungie can do whatever the **** they want, but this, if true will totally suck balls. And you all would agree if they cut all your team stuff out of the beta.

Well, I'll be home soon to check for myself.

Added up my stats from today and I was only -10 in sixteen matches.......definately a marked improvement over yesterday's -66 in fifteen matches. :lol

I've begun a spreadsheet for my stats. I'm gonna start breaking things down into fine detail.

Bungie.net screwed up, it's like this:

Social Matches

* Big Team Training
* Double Team Training
* Team Training

Ranked Matches

* Team Slayer
* Big Team Battle
* Rumble pit (and not Team Skirmish)

Still sucks, Rumble Training was all I played. Good thing I have a blog to vent on.

Skirmish is gone? Most I played in there was VIP and Territories anyway...

Hopefully most or 60% of games in BTB are objectives. I love flag at Valhalla.
