I've been waiting for Double Team. Glad I didn't play last night. It will be an all-nighter with my brother, I think.
comrade said:BR kills in 4 shots minimum. Range doesn't have anything to do with how fast a Carbine will kill you. It takes 5 shots(anywhere) to drop there shields then one final shot to the head to kill. Same with the BR. 3 shots anywhere, could be the left buttcheek, then one final burst to the head for a kill.
Aiming to the head(with the BR) for the initial 3 shots isn't always the best idea. The bullets are in a random 3-shot spread pattern and the head is a small target. On a moving target it could be only 1 or 2 bullets from the burst hitting them. That just means you have to hit them more times. I out BR a lot of people and I usually shoot my first 3 shots at shoulder height where the widest target is and then move up to the head for the last 1-2 shots. The only time I don't do this is in FFA or when I know that the person is wounded. Hope this helps.
BadAss84 said:Thanks for the info, i'll try that.
I'm sure i've been 3 shotted a number of times with the BR though, but maybe i had been shot from elsewhere at the same time without knowing it.
There might be less of an noticeable effect with the carbine compared to the BR, or something. I would go play and find out but if I don't get this work done by friday...D:CreepingDea7h said:So does anyone know for sure if BR/Carbine shots don't do more damage to the head if shields are up? If they don't, I'll be sad, I was pretty sure they did in Halo 2, and I don't want to know that all of my headshots have been going to waste![]()
Be much easier to find out if your enemy doesn't shoot backDiablohead said:There might be less of an noticeable effect with the carbine compared to the BR, or something. I would go play and find out but if I don't get this work done by friday...D:
We had a lot of feedback from Halo 2 about the colorful language that characterized matchmaking. Since our request for a microphone mounted soap injector went unheeded by the XBL team, were trying some things in the Beta to improve the situation. Some of this may have gone unnoticed, but in the interest of soliciting feedback, Id like to explain exactly what is going on.
First, you may have noticed that all ingame communication with enemy players is prohibited in Ranked matches. This does mean you cannot talk smack, but it also means somewhat less verbal abuse, and greater concentration on team communication. Our focus in Ranked hoppers is combat and competition, clean and simple. Humping, however, is significantly improved.
In Social hoppers, an option exists in your Voice Communication settings to impose similar restrictions. However, it is turned off by default. Our focus in Social hoppers is on interaction with other players, and voice is part of that. Not everyone enjoys this interaction, though, and prefer to talk only to their team and party. The voice option is Matchmaking Voice > Team and Party. If enabled, you will only hear (and be heard by) members of your team, and members of your party. Of course, if your party members are divided onto enemy teams, you will only be able to communicate via proximity voice.
We are curious: how has this impacted your time in the Beta? And if youve been playing Social matches, have you tried the 'Team and Party' option?

In light of that, I was wondering if I might tap you guys for some additional feedback, given that many of you have been extremely active in the Beta. The following was posted on our b.net forums, but I figure I'll put it up here too, for your consideration:

Nah I don't play Team matches so my headset is used solely for smack talk and useless chit-chat. Last night we were in a 5 person party and we were matched up with this dude who kept singing his smack talk popped in. That experience was so awesome that I knew I made the right choice by not restricting my headset options. I'll never forget him singing about how he couldn't pull off a BXB combo anymore.ferrex said:This thread (all 296 pages of it) have been quite useful for us as we monitor the Beta. I've done that many times. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do that. The mute on the headphones is done with hardware, it does not speak with the software at all.GashPrex said:Also it may be small and stupid but if there was some on screen way to know if you have muted yourself, sometimes I turn it off to cough and such and then just forget and never look down at my controller.
That happens to me so many times. One time I think I was talking to myself for a whole game. :loltak said:I've done that many times. Unfortunately, there is no way to do that. The mute on the headphones is done with hardware, it does not speak with the software at all.

Hopefully most or 60% of games in BTB are objectives. I love flag at Valhalla.
I do the mute thing sometimes too (turn mine off because I have fans directed at me. LA heat ftw), but the ironic part is that having to push dpad helps you remember because you hear that noise at the beginning and end of your transmission. I would like team speak to be on all the time, though.GashPrex said:Personally I just want team chat to be on all the time, I don't want to have to press the directional button to do so because then I have to move my hand during a battle...or at least make that an option. I have noticed and appreciate the voice settings in ranked games. I have been the victim of many a copse hump and appreciated not hearing the associated "pillow talk". I am sure it would have charred my fragile ears. (The only downside was I couldn't yell at the douches that used standby on Voc and I last night to win a Land Grab game. But all in all, I like the setting.)ferrex said:This thread (all 296 pages of it) have been quite useful for us as we monitor the Beta. Yelling at them would only encourage the douchebags. They get off on your misery.GhaleonEB said:I have noticed and appreciate the voice settings in ranked games. Really, the default options feel pretty natural and work well.
I'd prefer it to the lonely silence that exists now. I don't notice music or breathing in the lobbies or when in proximity to my teammates now.ToyMachine228 said:You realize you'd probably hear people breathing and listening to music in every game right?

Is it that hard? Nope, but it's just one more layer between me and communication with my team. We already have 50% of the teammates that don't have a mic, 10% that don't know how it works, and 40% that are shy or some shit. It's so effing quiet every match I play that isn't with my own party.Ramirez said:Is it honestly that hard for some of you to hit the d-pad to talk to people? I'm used to it. I has caused a snafu exactly twice (trying to warn someone about a rocket launcher-carrying enemy in our base, blowing up our doodz - but not getting the message out on time). Really, it's not a big deal and ferrex has said it's a trade-off for a better connection. Given how solid most 4 vs. 4 games are, I think it's worth it.Ramirez said:Is it honestly that hard for some of you to hit the d-pad to talk to people? As someone pointed out earlier, the main problem is that you have to take your finger away from a more vital part of the controller to team talk. This is not bad when you are just walking around, but in heated battle it is not something you want to do.Ramirez said:Is it honestly that hard for some of you to hit the d-pad to talk to people? ferrex said:As for the PTT [push to talk] thing, I'd love to write a Gamasutra scale article for you guys explaining the whys and hows, but I don't think it'd do much good (internet arguments, lawl.)
I will offer this, though: it's a very deliberate decision, factors heavily into Halo's solid network performance (which I think is a tradeoff most people appreciate, even if they don't realize it), and we are still carefully considering situations where we might enable open channel voice when network performance permits it (smaller team games, for example.)

I would like free communication with my teammates. Sure you might have some ahole with his music blaring, but generally if you ask they will turn it off (if they dont well then u mute them). Either way it helps me to have a open line of communication to my teammates.
Just curious, but how do other games get away with the bandwidth problems of having open communication with the entire team?
Ramirez said:Not arguing, I just really find it odd that it's a complaint, never been a problem for me is all I'm saying.
And as someone else mentioned, if the mic's were open all the time you'd always have some idiot singing or trying to let you listen to his trash ass music or something.
I've honestly never played a game on Live that was as lag free as Halo 8 player matches are...
Either they don't have the same problem (eg. smaller teams, like Gears), they make voice unreliable by doing invisible throttling (eg. send voice to 3 of your 8 teammates but don't tell you, or clobber voice traffic with game traffic), or they make no effort to regulate it at all (and sometimes your bandwidth is just saturated and nobody really cares, except for the people lagging.)sableholic said:Just curious, but how do other games get away with the bandwidth problems of having open communication with the entire team?

Keeping voice reliable is pretty important to us (if you can't rely on it, it's basically useless as a teamwork tool), so the bandwidth regulation is very aggressive.
Edit: And to be fair, there is another possibility, that their netcode is lighter weight than ours and they have more bandwidth to spare. I could easily see games with less going on having to send less game data to keep everyone coordinated.
