I had no idea making a disc can be as involving as a big-budget video game. The Main Event said:That will eventually be the most impressive HD disc ever.

Blu-Ray needs 14-19 $/ prices...Nicodimas said:Blu-ray needs a 199 MSRP player this year(100 bucks on black friday)...then hopefully the cheaper players in 09.

$249? No, Sony needs a $150 model STAT if they want to make Bluray a viable Christmas item - and I mean "viable" in DVD terms. They may have already lost the window for that.VanMardigan said:I'd be content with a $149-$199 Black Friday player and $249 MSRP player by the end of the year. I REALLY wish they'd put out a 1080i player if that meant that we could get a cheaper player sooner. My second tv is 1080i and my 1080p tv does deinterlacing just fine.
The problem I have with the article is that there is a concerted effort by the BDA to maintain the high prices for a longer period of time than dvd did, which does not seem like a smart move imo if you want to hit the mainstream.

Reduce the barriers to entry and the lowest denominator will buy in. They can still sell plenty of the higher end machines to people who don't want gimped movie watching, but they won't sell anything until the consumer sees the $150 price tag.
VanMardigan said:I don't know if you read the whole part about preventing chinese manufacturers from making cheap BD players so they can keep the prices artificially high in that article in the last page. The BDA is in absolutely NO RUSH to bring the prices down. In fact, they're actively working against it.
Personally, I'm baffled at this strategy because it flies in the face of the logic that dictates that you want this product to hit mainstream before the window of opportunity for HD disc media closes. Wasn't that Warner's reasoning for abandoning HD DVD, the closing window of opportunity? How does that mesh with actively preventing falling prices to protect margins for large CE manufacturers? We are about to hit the two year mark for the format. The time to milk early adopters needs to be replaced with the era of rapidly expanding growth for the format, and taking steps to prevent prices from falling seems counterproductive.
I don't know why you're lobbing this at me. I also don't know where I said anything about Chinese players. Sony makes sub-$100 DVD players, I think they can find a way to make a $150 BRD player. We're arguing the same thing, more or less.VanMardigan said:I don't know if you read the whole part about preventing chinese manufacturers from making cheap BD players so they can keep the prices artificially high in that article in the last page. Get content out there and bring the content prices down and the people will come.
If someone is going to lose sleep over paying 299 for a player instead of 199 then they are not exactly the type that will be running out week after week buying movies for normal prices.
"Sony still hasn't learned..."
I think they learned rather well.
VanMardigan said:I know that, I was contrasting your post with the article showing why I don't think your expectations were in line with the BDA and therefore not realistic.
I still liked it, though, in a weird way. It did look and sound great as well. Thing is, as a videogame plot, that script rocks.![]()

finally. In other news today, you Blu-ray fans should be happy with this: 20th Century Fox has just lowered the SRP of many of its older catalog Blu-ray Disc releases by $10, cutting them from $39.99 to $29.99. These include titles like Chain Reaction, Speed, Fantastic Four, The Omen etc. A select few additional titles have been price reduced by about $5 each from $39.99 to $34.99 (Kingdom of Heaven, etc). New and more recent titles remain priced at $39.99. Amazon has already started reducing their prices accordingly.
Cosmic Bus said:Since Amazon is currently choosing not to, Best Buy went ahead and put a number of Universal's catalog titles on sale for $10.49: The Pianist, Bourne, Tremors, the Thing, Shaun...

YYZ said:Why hasn't the BDA given the license to Chinese manufacturers? Is it a quality issue?
Mr. Glasgow expressed hope that price levels wouldnt collapse the way they did for DVD players. To protect against this, he said the Blu-ray Association, the group that controls the Blu-ray standard, has not licensed it to any manufacturers in China
They have announced chinese manufactured players already coming this year.YYZ said:Why hasn't the BDA given the license to Chinese manufacturers? Is it a quality issue?

VanMardigan said:Here, collapse is code for "we couldn't make the ridiculous margins we wanted for as long as we wanted". So, to fix this, they're going to shut out Chinese BD makers to ensure that they can bring down the price at their own glacial pace.
OokieSpookie said:They have announced chinese manufactured players already coming this year.
Do not listen to Van's bullshit, he still has some red sand in his vag that he can not quite get out.
Perhaps he isn't referring to $200 players, but $40 DVD players that are on the market now?
