The iOS Gaming Thread: November 2012 A Bold New Era!

I'm late to the party for things, because that's how I roll. But I need to ask: is it even possible to complete Organ Trail? I've tried all different kinds of builds for my resources and I still only get about halfway before that's it. And that's on easy, even!

Reflec Beat + is great fun, especially 2 player mode, but the music is mostly crap. There's a very limited selection of purchasable music too.

I just synced my iPhone 4 and the now universal version of Bastion that I had backed up on iTunes from the iPad was copied to it (I have the auto-sync new apps option ticked for both). I was aware it doesn't work but it's kind of ridiculous that they allow you to install it on iPhone 3GS + 4 and iPod Touch 3rd + 4th just to be greeted with a "this app doesn't run on your device" message.

Is that Capcom sale still on? And is there a Time Crisis designed for iPad or iPad Retina? I have one of them (I think it's second strike) but it's definitely not even iPhone Retina :/

Apple doesn't let developer specify which versions of an idevice an app can run on. They just have broad requirements, like front camera, flash, gyroscope, etc.

This happens with Machinarium on the iPad 1, it gives you a message when you open it saying the game cannot run on this device.

They could have easily excluded 3GS, iPad 1, and Touch 4th Gen if it doesn't work on any of those.

I'm going to put this down to Warner not setting up the iTunes Connect meta data correctly.

Dunno why I've had a sudden urge to get into iOS gaming but whatever. Currently iPhone 5 only and played some Puzzle & Dragons tonight and it was quite a bit of fun, really enjoyed it (seems there are a LOT of clones with good ratings out there though). Hero Academy as well is nice. I can't seem to get too into the phone because of the wait for an iPad around Christmas. :( I only just created my Game Center account after an embarrassing amount of time. For some reason though it just feels so satisfying lately vs Steam, maybe because I'm in total blackout about all the games and everything is a mystery. Anyway, I have a metric ton of games in AppShopper in my wishlist so hopefully I'll have a lot of games by Christmas. Thanks to all of you for a lot of recommendations.

Anything similar to Pokemon besides maybe Dragon Island Blue?

My wife downloaded a bunch of free games for the ipad by big fish games, problem is she enjoyed the free trials but now to unlock the full games they're like $7.50 each in-app purchases, which seems way over priced to me for what they are and how long they will probably last.

Are there similar games available on the ipad that are free or not as expensive?

Also she liked one by g5 games called Totem Tribe Gold HD, which also looked terrible... anything similar to that?

Most Big Fish Games have a separated version for each game. Lite and full, dunno if they are at the same price than the iaps bur I did a quick check and a few were like max $5. Either way, the only Big Fish game she will need is Fairway Solitarie!

Been playing Angry Birds Space on my iPhone 4S and loved every second of it, but now I can't play because it's constantly crashing before I can even make it past the title screen. I'm a bit of an iOS dummy, but I deleted the game and reinstalled it and I'm still having the exact same problem. Any tips?

That should change soon; jukebeat launched with a similarly slim amount of songs available in the store and after a bit of a rough start fell into a pattern of releasing a pack every 2-3 weeks. If you want a preview of things to come you could download the Japanese version and just browse the store there - most of the songs in the numbered packs that have named artists should make it over here eventually. The Japanese version also has a different set of starter songs, so it's pretty much getting 3 more songs for free.

I'm assuming you mean the hidden object/adventure puzzle games? I'd suggest the following:

Tiny Bang Story HD ($2.99) - Port of a PC game, it's definitely one of the better hidden object games available thanks to a surreal art style and world. You hunt around various environments for hidden objects, which then you use to solve various puzzles.

If you want more info, here's a write up on the PC version on RPS.

The Room ($1.99) - Myst modernized for the iPad, managing to cast off all the chaff from those old games. You're presented with various objects, and attempt to solve various puzzles to open each one. Incredibly tactile.

If your wife likes adventure games you'll have to shell out, all the good ones are either classics like Broken Sword which may be cheap/free at times only because they're so old and some newer games that took some resources to be made and so aren't likely to get $1 sales to reduce their value that much any time soon. Outside exceptions like The Room which are cheap (but it's really a puzzle game with some nice atmosphere, not a full adventure with a long character driven story etc). From Big Fish I would suggest Drawn: The Painted Tower and Drawn: Dark Flight (in order). There's another sequel or two I haven't played but those two are amazing and will last a while if she doesn't abuse the hint system (beyond hints after a period it even allows you to auto solve riddles in order to proceed iirc). I posted some screens of the PC version on this old thread (ignore the meltdown).

Reboot, remove other apps from multitasking. If its still crashing then its the apps fault and you'll need to wait for a patch.

Yeah, tried all of that. Several times actually. Still crashes consistently. But something weird JUST happened. I just got a phone call (the first one I've gotten today) and now the game seems to be running perfectly fine. Is that normal? And thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

So I know this is completely off topic-but I trust the people in this thread. I need your opinion. I have a VITA-seriously contemplating selling it now, based on the fact that I have zero hope for any worthwhile games in 2013. I want to use the money I get from that to get a Wii U. Someone please tell me to do it. And why.

I can honestly say the Vita has 5x more titles than I'm interested in when compared to what I know of the Wii U's library. So, no, I don't think I can help you here.

So, how did the games pan out from the last week or so for everyone? Anyone play Arranger or Micro Miners? Let's hear it!

I liked Dream of Pixels from what little I played. It didn't really put its hooks in me, though. I guess I'd recommend it for a dollar. Once things pick up speed and start flowing it's a great game.

You can still wait a bit more for any possible announcement.
But if you have no hope go ahead and do it, the japanese market won't save the Vita.
Or you can also wait and see if the Wii U will bomb or not (for 3rd party).

Can't stop playing Puzzle & Dragons. It is the only app I have ever made a in app purchase. Gungho has found the line between purchase being required vs. wanting to purchase in game. I'm toying with the idea of starting over and hoarding the magic stones for stamina and continues with the occasional machine play. Knowing now what I didn't know then would've saved me about eight bucks.

Thanks to those that posted recommendations for hidden puzzle type games for my wife.

I can't see her liking 'real' adventure games like Broken Sword, too difficult and she will lose interest fast. I also can't see her being interested in Solitare Fairway, she hates most card games and doesn't like golf, lol.

I've told her about Tiny Bang Story so she will take a look at that one later.

CAN'T
STOP
PLAYING
KNIGHTS OF PEN&PAPER.

Multiple over level 30 enemies fights are incredibly complex and damn hard.

Soooo fun, sooooo tense!!!

I love this game...if you ever spent your youth evenings playing D&D with a group of friends you shouldn't miss this game.

What do you mean? What should we know?

Don't spend your magic stones as soon as you get them (the tutorial forces you to spend your first five) they will dry up pretty quick once you start hitting the higher dungeons. You'll want to save them for those times you are at the boss fight and get whacked. Using one stone in those situations will allow you to respawn at boss without doing the whole dungeon over, the boss(es) will still have the damage you dealt prior to respawn. You can also use one stone to replenish all your stamina.

Long story short, dont spent a lot of stones on the rare monster machine. The machine costs 5 stones a pop, you can put them to better use on down the road.

So for whatever reason, I have been completely obsessed with Infectonator and Static Quest for the past few weeks.

Static Quest is really awesome, you basically can attack left or right, and you die a lot. Eventually you get enough money to unlock all sorts of weapons and upgrade your stats to live longer. You can increase the enemy level too. The whole game kinda has an 8-Bit Infinity Blade kind of feel.

Anyone else playing either?
