The iOS Gaming Thread: November 2012 A Bold New Era!

Regarding Knights of Pen&Paper update.

I played yesterday, post update, more than I care to admit so I want to share my impressions.
I was already pretty high level and sitting contanstly at above 1K gold.
TBH I never used gold that much.

While they surely lowered the fights income, I think criticism is a bit overstated (and I do not even think they did it on purpouse to get more money from people, they just got the iOS version on par with the Android build, which was already much more advanced).
Personally, I never ever used gold in the game before level 15, BAR for ressurecting my characters (which is cheap anyway)...even before everything was expensive and imho not that useful (both metagame and in game items).
I even agree with the decision to remove the blacksmith from the first village...it was outrageusly expensive anyway and lend people to think they just wanted you to buy IAPs.
Anyway yes...income is lower now.

BUT...I much more happy they finally upped the XP or corrected the bugs with the level progression, because while doing low level quests (I'm cleaning everything before the last story arc quests series) I was granted like 4 levels....it never happened before (XP per fights seems lower, but they must have lowered level requirements).
Also, finally, they corrected all the bugs about the skills...now my previously almost useless Paladin and Cleric kick some serious butts....I was able to complete some quests I couldn't before...easily.
My party can inflict a global 400HP per turn now.

Just my two cents....I still think the game is really awesome.
The grind part is there as before...you didn't grind for money anyway...objects are nothing compared to the level ups.
The only useful objects are potions for very difficult fights use, and they are interesting only after you leveld up the shops several times.
I wouldn't even rule out the idea they revert to the previous gold giving table, considering the amount of criticism they are getting.

Guys, P&P is totally worth the $2 still. It's not even really grindy - it's just that the fighting is the main type of gameplay that you'll find. So if you look at it as just a charming turn based fighting game then it does what it says on the tin. It's easily worth a couple of bucks and a few hours of your time.

It took me 30 minutes to grow all those pumpkins :D. Also half of my money is gone... I could sell them for a profit, but I like the way they decorate my little house :)

Yeah, but does the lack of gold significantly slow down the process? I just don't see why they would change it if not simply to encourage IAP...which is balls.

Not particularly. The start of the game is really quite slow anyway, but given that the entire game is fighting, having a few fights at the start to get moving isn't so bad.

It's a fun and charming little game.

This.
And to be honest....I didn't used gold that much...items are pretty lame...I just buy potions for mid fight use.

FYI Battle of the Bulge apparently has been submitted to Apple...personally I can't wait!!!

Totem Runner (free atm) is pretty great except for the completely unnecessary requirement to hold down the "button" that sows the plants etc when in the humanoid form, that should just happen automatically as long as you're in said form. Other than that even early on it seems to require decently precise gameplay if you're going for 3 star level finishers. Variety probably goes downhll soon but still, it's a nicely made game and looks great in motion.

Alrighty. Will check it out, then.

BTW, what is Battle of the Bulge? A TBS perhaps?

How do I collect gold in Shadowgun: Deadzone without paying for it? Do I get gold by ranking up or earning money?
And how is the voice chat in it after the latest update? Can you use the build-in microphone or do you have to use a headset/earphones?

Also, Episode 5 of The Walking Dead is apparently out if it haven't been mentioned yet.

Yes it's a beer&pretzel wargame, build from the ground up for iPad.
It's serious stuff :P

Think Panzer Corps (The Siltherine one)...but Panzer Corps has been postponed to Q1 2013, made by the same (awesome) guys that brought us Battle Academy (which is still outstanding imho, if you like these sort of games).

Async multiplayer is spectacular.

I'm fairly new to the genre but already loving it, I just wish it had CO OP multiplayer like StarBase Orion (CO OP is coming in BA2 it seems).

Watching the basics video, it looks a bit Civ-ish. Is it already out, or are you helping to beta test it?

And as an aside, wow at Groove Coaster. Just tried the new free one, and it's wonderfully Zen-ful. Though, it is hard sometimes to know when to tap because of the 3D landscapes. Guess I'll be buying the premium version.

No excuse for not playing Groove Coaster now. New tracks unlock if you have the paid version installed when you get Groove Coaster Zero. Game is good enough to play even if you're not a fan of the music. One of my favorites.

Groove Coaster Zero is more of a sequel than a free version of the original.

Especially if you have a Japanese IP. --;;

True dat. Groove Coaster is one of the few Japanese music games that doesn't want me to tear my ears off and murder an entire race of people. In fact, some of it is pretty good.

Anyone know what the countdown thing is in P&P on that map with the Missing No enemy? Is something bad going to happen??!

Well...it has nothing to do with Civilizations.
It's based on classical tabletop hex wargames.
The scope is recreating perfectly the fights of the past, modelling meticoulusely many things (from side tanks armour, to speed movement in the mud if it rains, fuel, ammos...); many games are set in WW2.

You can watch a Panzer Corps video online

to have an idea.

Unity of Command is another recent similar game, on Steam.

Battle of the Bulge has been submitted to the AppleStore today, I have nothing to do with testing or know the devs...I just got interested in the game reading Pocket Tactics.

I hope BotB will be out before the AppStore lockdown.
Panzer Corps should have been out too, but it has been postponed a bit.

These are operation level tactical games.
If you want to check something similar, but at unit level, you can check the Battle Academy Lite version on the AppStore and try the 2 missions included and multiplayer with someone who has the full version (even on PC, they are multiplatform async games).
The Omaha beach classical scenario (present in the Lite) is very satisfying :)

Let me know! :)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City hitting Android and IOS on December 6. Price: $5.

Rockstar says it will bring several enhancements unique to the mobile version, including "updated character models and lighting effects, and new and more precise firing and targeting options".

Rage of the Gladiator is really great. Excellent port. Gorgeous game.

Anyone in this topic playing Bladeslinger? I'd love to get your thoughts. My first impression is pretty negative :/

Knights of Pen and Paper is super addictive, thanks for the heads up GAF.

Any other recommendations for someone that likes pen and paper RP and d20 style games?

King of Dragons pass? Kinda? It's like 100h of content... :D

How much does your desicions actually effect the story? Is it worth it to go through the game a second time? (Scared of going into the spoiler free thread)

As I understand it some of your decisions can affect who lives/dies at pivotal moments in each chapter.

I believe the entire story arc adheres to a fairly strict progression, but the interactions & peripheral characters who you deal with can change.

I played through the first chapter twice and that was what I got from it. I felt like a horrible person on the second (mean) play through. Clem does not deserve that.

Thinking about doing a mean playthroufh as well.according to the statistics at the end of the second episode it looks like ~80% of the players are playing as "good"

EA sale time again.

I bought Need for Speed Most Wanted, $4.99. Awesome that I can earn points that transfer flawlessly to my Xbox 360 version. Game is amazing looking, haven't put too much time into it so far. Definitely has a WOW factor.
