The iOS Gaming Thread: November 2012 A Bold New Era!

So a while back I remember I may have did a friendly thing by dropping a line in here about a game that a few ex-coworkers worked on: Kunundrum and Polara. Well, I guess things haven't been going well at all, and despite all the good reviews and feedback, it looks bleak for them. He ended up writing this over at Penny Arcade Report:

http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/how-making-a-quality-game-killed-a-developers-dreams-and-shut-down-his-stud

Not familiar with Kunundrum, but I have bought Polara and posted impressions here a while back. It's an amazing game. Sad to see the developers struggling like that.

Oh shit, is Battle Cats by the same guy who did the Mr. Oops/Jump series?

PS. Has there been a price announced for that Vectrex emu? Looks sweet.

I know why I did not pick that game up. 1st I've got lots of runners already, good popular ones for free too.
2nd I remember shots of cut scenes with cyber babe with big tits, thought it was a bit try hard from the developer to go for the titillation angle to get attention.
3rd avalanche of iOS titles and a huge back catalog, my purchasing decisions are quite quick. If nobody mentions the game again I've forgotten it.

It's a runner, but its not an endless runner. Think Rayman jungle or Wind-up Knight. The game has great gameplay, and amazing atmosphere.

Are there more games on IOS that have a story and a significant length?

Examples being Ghost Trick and Penny Arcade 3.

I have trouble getting into the smaller, more repetitive, games that tend to be super popular.

Notable exceptions being Super Hexigon and 100000000.

Please recommend some good single handed vertical screen games! (ideally not freemiumy)

I'm often stuck standing on the train, and as much as I love Zoo Keeper I'd like some options. (note: not Drop7, I have and dislike Drop7)

Monkey Island 1 and 2, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Beneath a Steel Sky, Telltale Games' lineup.

Dream of Pixels.

You're welcome :)

Knights of Pen and Paper, Wargames, 100000000

I enjoyed 100000000000 for a while.

IAP consumables kill interest for me, unfortunately.
They should decide whether this is freemium or paid.

The IAP is very optional. I've not bought any at all and am not short of money. IAP is here to stay, and when it's unobtrusive and optional then I see no problem with it. You're going to end up with a very small list of games you can play if you ignore every game with IAP.

Perhaps, but iOS games tend to have a decent idea of whether they're free with consumables, or paid with pay to unlock more content. Mostly it makes me doubt the game design, which isn't a great way to play a game.

I'm glad to hear that it is unobtrusive, but it does make me suspect the designers would have put an arbitrary progress wall later in the game with the express purpose to fleece customers.

These days, not having consumable IAP in most games is just leaving money on the table. I fully expect 100% of new games to have some sort of IAP regardless of initial price point by February.

Yep but doesn't mean it isn't annoying. Games like P&P you are never *quite* sure if you should be grinding or paying. You also don't know if the IAP is worth while, or a complete waste of time. Worse, games like puzzle craft would be killed by using it.

I'll still avoid it whenever possible. Might limit some options, but there are no lack of those.

Yeah, could be.

It's distracting though. As a game designer myself, I find myself analysing the design model and developer motivations, rather than sinking into the game.

As a rule of thumb avoiding games adopting this model means that I'm less likely to get angry when playing the game.

Anyone else hyped for Jet Set Radio in 2 days?

Hell yeah, although I've no idea why. I got it on Vita last week and all my iOS time has been taken up with Extreme Road Trip 2, Simpsons: Tapped Out, and the occasional burst on Arc Squadron.

I'm still really looking forward to JSR though. Perhaps because I want to try the controls out.

That's odd. Why would you get the iOS version when you already have the Vita version?

Frankly, the game is not even that great. There, I said it.

If anything, the pay wall is kinda at the start of the game where it is very grindy and you can have your whole party wiped easily. Now at level 25 across my party I'm earning money as quick as I can spend it.

These games are out in New Zealand so far:

- The Bowling Dead (Activision)
- Sky Hero (Chillingo)
- Gunner Runner
- Team Awesome
- Vectrex
- Flashout 3D (F-Zero look-alike)
- Build-a-lot 4: Power Source (40% off today)
- Word Derby
- Jet Set Radio

Show SEGA some love, really. Same reason I got the Vita version despite owning the DC version.

Plus, it'll be pretty cool to have on my phone.

Wrong.

See, for me the initial grind would make me suspect the whole game is like that and stop playing. It's hard to hold developers in good faith for game balance when the process is offered at a fee.

Yeah I certainly struggled for the first hour, it felt very grindy and too hard. It's not until a little while in when you figure out the concussion spells and the game becomes a charming cakewalk.

Loving Cytus. Fun rhythm game that's an absolute bargain for the number of songs in the game. Their plan to release a chapter consisting of 10 songs for every 100,000 purchases of the game is interesting too. Sure hope they release all 10 chapters eventually.

Knights of Pen&Paper

I completed the game without any iaps whatsoever.
Just do not think you NEED objects from the stores initially (you really don't need it...just use the money to travel and resurrect).
On the contrary, the game (combining the fact you can set your own difficulty) was a bit easy.
Nonetheless I loved it.
Keep in mind the gold is shared among all save games too.
I started to buy things already at high level, just for the achievements...they aren't really needed for the campaign.

Now...the optional level 50 chromatic maze...that is another story (it's DAMN HARD, and iaps don't help).

Magic Orbz is pretty good for a brick breaker game.

Whomever nabs JSR first, please tell us the file size installed.

Thanks
I think someone on Touch Arcade said 1.1GB or 600MB but I'm absolutely not sure. Try look on their forum thread.

Also, I got 3x 2500 coins in freeappslots today.

Guess I won't be buying anything this week. I'll get Vice City next week and think about Modern Combat 4.

Didn't they say FALL 2012? So it should be out sometime in the next 2 days..

The timing was off by just a smidge, and it was too noticeable for me to enjoy the game to the fullest. I'm still digging Reflec Beat+ though - you might enjoy that.

Just played the first two chapters of The Walking Dead. This shit is too intense to play it all in one go.

I used to like Kenny in the first chapter, but fuck damn.
