The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

I was playing Free Running on a friend's Android tablet, you were kind of a stick figure and running, one button jumped over little blocks, one button rolls under high ones. I know this is somewhat similar to Canabalt and would like to play more on my iPhone, which is the best of these type of games?

Canabalt, Monster Dash, Run Like Hell!, I Must Run.

Canabalt is pretty good but it's just jumping and is one of those "see how far you can go games". Mirror's Edge is a fairly decent play on this formula but with a lot more types of move you can do and a more traditional approach to being a platform game with levels in it.

But the favourite of these games that I've played it Hook Worlds. It's basically canabalt crossed with bionic commando, you're always running but you have a jump and a grappling hook to swing with, as well as a specific ability limited to the level like rocket boots or a gun. It's a really inventive play on platforming and the different level gimmicks are all pretty fun.

I have Canabalt, Mirrors Edge and Monster Dash. Each of those are pretty good.

I hope EA starts adding Game Center to their games. They better start with Dead Space. I want to play the Ea Sports titles online and I'd love for them to release NHL 12 | Shoot Out or something.

I was hoping they would add GC support to Reckless Racing. I'd jump right into the multiplayer but I hate having to sign up for a billion different online services.

GC or bust

None of those really do it for me.

Robot Unicorn Attack is where it's at! Sooo good. Just the first one though. With no Erasure it's just not the same.

Also +1 on Hookworlds, really excellent stuff. Plus it's like 3 games in one.

Also Chop Chop Runner which I think is free.

thanks to whoever recommended pocket halfpipe! game is crazy fun. lots of value here for a buck. and it has retina support!

180_full_icon.png

our puzzle game 180 is free once again this weekend thanks to DailyAppDream.com! (LINK)

Fans of Magical Drop and Tetris Attack will dig it. We were free for all of December and this is kind of a leftover from that (long story) so don't get used to it :) In other news I am working on "a new version" of the game, so keep an eye out. thanks for your support gaf, please review it on iTunes and tell your friends to grab the game if you enjoy it!

EDIT: A very big company expressed some serious interest in our game so watch for some exciting news in February :)

^ Nice, congrats! 180 is an awesome puzzle game. What are your thoughts on the 'free for a month' promotion you did last month? Sounds like you have no regrets!

And I second Robot Unicorn Attack; it still is my preferred "running" genre game.

I'm tempted to take the plunge and check out Road Blaster despite the mixed impressions here... I'm interested in the control schemes. That can really make or break a lot of games!

"A very big company expressed some serious interest in our game so watch for some exciting news in February :)" <-- there's no way this would have happened without that promotion. We got installed on over 100,000 devices in December alone, and we got to shoot up the charts for a couple of minutes before the "Mad December Rush" took hold. Was it worth it? Absolutely! Have I seen a big payday out of it? You'll know when that happens (a slew of other games from Headcase will start to trickle out!)

there's no way I am not gonna buy Road Blaster! I am still unclear if they put "the song" in there or not but either way it is very hard to argue with a game I loved "back in the day" for just a buck! On that note I hope we see Dragon's Lair II as well, someday..

Kind of shocked that Rimelands got a new update AND a content increase.
I had basically given up on it being supported beyond that initial, rather bare bug fix patch so long ago.

Edge is one of the best portable games I've ever played - from gameplay to presentation, that game has it.
I second this notion. I managed to get Edge for free a year ago and its definitely one of the most unique and high quality games on the app store. Probably my favorite along with Eliss.

I was going to consider that game but now u put me over the edge, I'll buy it today

Would everyone / anyone here be interested in a monthly iOS thread where the OP would have games GAF suggest you get/avoid. Big titles coming that month and maybe even an interview with an indie dev. every month.

It's amazing how Apple has become a major player in the videogame market. I now believe they have a shot at becoming the overall leader in 3 years from now, with their disruptive business model and the low priced games. Quality and quantity are both drastically increasing.

If its as good as the Xbox Indies thread, then sure.

I think I'd prefer the current mega thread format more. Otherwise it's mostly up to the monthly thread creator to play 'head editor' and choose which games are getting highlighted in the OP every month... and I see both positives and negatives from that. hmm.

Edit- also I bought Road Blaster. Will post some impressions after playing it some more, but so far I don't regret the purchase!

On the edge to double dip on Plants vs Zombies for the iPad, I have the iPhone version and been playing in the iPad at 2x and it looks fine.

Is there any major difference in content between the iPad and the iPhone version besides the native resolution?

I would. Sounds cool if it's done really well, like shots, videos, info and maybe some quoted impressions rather than a list of "what I like and what I don't like."

You, sir, have great taste. Eliss is amazing and I really miss it. I'm excited to be able to play it again in February when VeriPhone is out. It's one of the freshest experiences I've ever had in gaming.

Tell me more of what you like please. I've been out of the loop for a while and you have earned my trust.

It really is. It was a toss up on whether iOS gaming would matter and I honestly didn't think it could. When I had my iPhone it took tons of gaming time and cash and not only did I completely shun my DS and PSP, I would chose to play iOS games over 360 and PS3 very often at home. There's so much variety at such reasonable prices. I'm barely interested in 3DS or PSP2 knowing I'll have my iPhone back. It's really all I need for portable gaming and then some.

What's the deal with this Edge game?

It was on the App store before but then got taken off and it's been brought back?

I've never heard of it, but my interest has been peaked.

There's a game called iCarus that is free for a few days. No idea how it plays but it looks artsy as fuck if anyone's into that type of thing.

Anyone have opinion on Dungeon Hunter 2 vs the original? I'm maybe half way through the HD version of the first one but the 2nd looks like it may have pretty good improvements to load times or save points. Is it worth finishing the first one or maybe just jump right to #2?

It's a pretty great...platformer I suppose? With some puzzle elements. Just watch that video. It disappeared for some drama about it's name being trademarked or something. It had a lot of hype and praise, it's now a classic in iPhone gaming as far as I'm concerned.

Looks pretty damn neat. I wish there was a Lite version to try it out but I think I'm going to get it anyway for 99cents.

It was involved in a massive legal wrangle surrounding its name. While its a tale for the ages, it's all sorted out now and is back on the store for good.

The first is not very long, so you can try to quickly go through it (it is of course flawed).

I personally think the 2nd is much better - it feels more polished, prettier, and a bit less repetitive. It's still easy as fuck, though.

When I suggested apple would become major player in the games industry the day the app store originally debuted I got laughed out of the thread on gaf.

Road Blaster is totally worth the price of admission. Change the car type to B for aesthetics and use the tilt steering controls! I'm having a lot of fun with it.

I'm certainly grateful for the update, but their claim of Retina support is a loose one indeed. It looks like most of the main game is Retina (it still looks a bit janky in spots; maybe it's the compression), but the menus are still horribly pixelated.

Stanza sucks for PDFs though, iBooks is actually really nice for reading PDFs.

Stanza sucks in general. Still pisses me off that Amazon bought them to just halt development. Stanza was really shaping up to be something special but it is suffering the same fate as Mobipocket (also bought and crippled by Amazon.) /rant

Fuck, is that why there hasn't been an update to Stanza in forever? I really love Stanza for my .epub and .mobi ebooks, but there are some annoying bugs in sorting that I really want to get fixed.

That sucks.

Really? What's wrong with them? I'm getting a Kindle this week so I'd be interested in hearing about it.

If you can't beat em, buy em!

Stanza got an update a while after they were acquired (I think it was a major one even)...but I guess it hasn't seen much since? It's probably a case of assigning the devs to work on Kindle or whatever, without ever really killing off their original stuff.

If iBooks gets an update for a black/night color scheme, and for either removing the page turn animation or making it 3x faster, it will be perfect for me.

I vastly prefer it to Stanza for the bookshelf view alone, and the newly added collections feature (aka swipe left or right for additional bookshelves) allows me to group large series of books like Wheel of Time on their own bookshelf.

I feel like there should be some really beautiful and chill arty game I should be able to fire up, preferably with the option of playing my own iPod music to it... Osmos got boring fast, Ozone could be a bit more varied and allow iPod music, Zen Bound has nearly all the necessary ingredients but the gameplay is very unengaging to me...

I just discovered Eliss though, that's quite an amazing game and comes close to the type of experience I'm looking for.

I love how Flipboard did the page turn animation. It's perfect.

I was really hoping for the Sega CD intro...damn thing still gives me the nerd chills to this day. So bad ass.

Other than that I agree, tilt controls and dashboard B all the way.

You can enable black/white mode in accessibility options so when you triple click the home button, it inverts it so it's the way you want, and triple click to back to normal. Not perfect(and awful looking beyond text) but it accomplishes that fine.

Plus you can just tap left or right to change pages instead of having to drag it yourself, not sure if that's a setting or if it's available by default, but ibooks is my primary ebook reader.

Kindle just had an update that allows you to import a couple file types in the phone, which is a big bonus, it also has day/night mode without having to fake it.

I liked the bookshelf view in iBooks but the margins are way too big. I gave the Kindle app a try but it scrolls like ass through my 100 or so books, has the same huge margins, and the smallest font is absolutely gigantic on my iPhone 4.

Looks like I'm sticking with Stanza. It's amazing just how superior it remains to the mediocre offerings of two titans like Apple and Amazon, even after not being updated in the past 7 months.

I don't think I'll be able to list anything beyond what can be found in this thread but... here are a couple of games I really think are really great and worth the money

Papa Sangre - A horror themed adventure game that uses holophonic sound files to construct a 3D world that you navigate with your ears. It's incredibly unique, and the technology fueling the soundscape is impressive.

Game Dev Story - A simulation type game where you manage a game company, extremely addictive.

Hellsing's Fire - A very unique puzzle game where you use must manipulate the light from a torch in order to illuminate enemies to destroy them. This game has bitchin' music and awesome presentation.

Hector Badge of Carnage - A point and click adventure game in the style of the old Lucas Arts games set in the jolly UK, featuring a crass, wise cracking detective and tons of irreverent adult humor.

Cause of Death - An episodic crime visual novel game in the style of the Choose Your Own Adventure books, it's similar in tone and execution as Heavy Rain. New chapters are provided every Friday for free which is very cool.

Dodonpachi Resurrection/Espgaluda II - Bullethell SHMUPs from Cave. If you don't know what these are, I don't care, get them anyway and marvel at the 2 dimensional insanity unfolding on your phone's screen.

Pizza Boy - A really great, Mario style platformer with excellent, responsive controls.

Cat Run - A line drawing game where you guide different types of cats with different characteristics across a busy street. There are a lot of interesting rules to the game that you must abide by in order to succeed and it's got a great art style.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit - I've played a number of the best racing games available on iOs, and this one was one of the ones I really enjoyed. It's simple to pick up and play, and very fun.

Zombie Smash - A very cool tower defense game where you use gestures to flick, smash, and shoot zombies away to keep them from invading your house. It has an item upgrade component to it as well.

Bit Pilot - An intense game with old school pixel graphics that's similar to Tilt to Live except you use twin stick style controls instead of tilt.
