The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

The general feel I get from this thread is people like casual games a bit more than the hardcore ones but anyone playing any solid online games? I remember playing Eliminate and iMech a lot a long time ago. Is there a "go to" online deathmatch/whatever game?

Some would say either Modern Combat 2 or NOVA 2 fit the bill just fine.

Hmm, how is Ridge Racer Accelerated? Is it basically the PSP version?
Stay away. While it's not bad, if you go in expecting something of the quality of the PSP version you will be disappointed. If you just want some RR in your pocket, go for it, it is RR.

If you have an iPhone / iPod Touch I believe there is a Battlefield game which is online.

The music files, players, filers, and back-up system are all Apple. One of the few but really compelling arguments for a unified gadget platform is there's nobody else they can blame if stuff goes wrong with my iTunes purchases.
Well for music and videos they're at the mercy of the media companies too. Whether the single download restriction is them or Apple is the real question, although my guess is that the media companies are afraid of/incredibly paranoid about easy sharing while Apple doesn't really care cause their money maker is the hardware.

So I just got a $50 iTunes gift card. Any favourite app suggestions? I'm not sure what to get. I've just bought infinity blade. I own a bunch of free apps and cheap apps. Any good games that are a little more pricey? Like Nazi Zombies, Sonic 4 or SFIV. Any good?
Cave games if you like 2D bullet hell (Dodonpachi Resurrection, Espgaluda II are great, Mushi Bug Panic is less great but still good), Block Rogue if you like puzzles (a few hundred designed levels, and an infinite amount with the random generator), the aforementioned Mad Skills Motocross is probably one of the better (if not the best) motorcycle game, QWOP is awesome cause the ridiculous difficulty...actually out of those games the Cave ones are the only "pricey" ones, but whatever. Buy a game for the game itself and ignore the price.

How is the content at this point? I know early on it had micro transactions out the ass but it sounds like they've opened up content with the updates. Does the base game have a decent amount of stuff in it now at least?

Why am I not enjoying world of goo?

I bought it for mac because everyone said it was good, but I was pretty disappointed, a lot at the controls. Fortunately I bought it for next to free. Now when everyone said it was much better on iPad, I bought it when it went on sale.

Cntrols are much more natural, but still nit feeling the game.

Once you get to the second world or so, it becomes the greatest game ever made temporarily in terms of level design.

You know, I own World of Goo for the Mac, Windows, and Wii and I've never made it to the second world before.

I suck at physics and balance. :(

I guess this is me. I get frustrated when everything comes tumbling down after buildingnsomething. I'm on thte high tower level in world one.

I never got into it myself, and most physics based games really outside of Boom Blox...unless it has motorcycles apparently (dammit RedLynx, put Trials on iOS).

Almost forgot to mention re: preferred controls on the last page, anyone remember those "Tactile Plus" overlay thingys from Japan a while back? Well I got it for cheap recently and wrote an overly long review here. Short summary: the dpad thing is surprisingly kinda good, the buttons seem kinda useless, but overall it's just kind of a pain to apply and remove the things unless you're sticking with a single game for a while.

Loved the Queen's Crown demo and picked up the full game but I can't figure out how to transfer my save. I signed up for game center and linked it to the full game but I can't link it to the demo (not even sure if that's how I would transfer a save)

Any ideas?

Try creating a Com2US hub account and linking the demo and game to that.
I've not tested it, but I vaguely remember reading about backing up saves to your Com2US hub account. I imagine it wouldn't be too complicated to then download it to the full game.

I was stuck at that one for a while too. Stopped playing the game for a month, came back, wrecked that level and everything else became more focused on logic than dealing with those retarded winds.

Don't give up. Build your base wide, and build fast higher. Don't try to quickly put something on the right if its leaning left or you'll fuck yourself over in the long run. Finding the pattern of gooballs when building upwards is the hard part, you have to experiment a bit. The difficulty goes down from there on, and like I said, it becomes more about practical solutions than "deal with the wind" kind of thing.

Thanks for the suggestions, i'll give it a go the next time I feel like playing it.

In other news I also bought rock band reloaded for iPad. Strange, because I played the demo of the iPhone version a long time a go, and found that pretty boring. This feels a bit boring too.

Burning to cd and re-ripping? No thanks. I'll just copy the files onto a disc or something. And you can do that with movies, just not play em on anything else.
That's actually what I meant, I didn't mean make a music CD and re-rip them. I shouldn't have used the word "rip" i guess.

mrkgoo said:
It's convenient.

My question is why people always have data and never back up.

Also, when did digital download mean you can always get that content at anytime? I'm not saying who's right or wrong or anything, but I'm just saying it's an assumption that people seem to make.

it almost never means that, just that most people have never lost all their music so don't hit the issue. I think its common with most, if not all, music services (which means its a label thing). Not sure about movies/TV. Apps is probably different because its lots of individual one-to-one contracts with Apple and much more on Apple's terms, so they can include redownloading for free.

Its kind of the same if you buy a CD - if you lose it the store doesn't give you a new one for free. Just that the physicality of a CD makes it less likely that you'll delete or format it. Plus if you rip a CD, you automatically have a backup in the CD, whereas downloading you have to conciously make a backup.

I managed to finish it. It's extremely short and not very fun, though I dig the art style.

In the first level you have to...

Swipe down on the character to get it to fly at a constant level. Then swipe forward to advance
thanks, at first I didnt even advance beyond the white circle you need to rub to get started at all

Art games might get more respect if they didn't actually suck as games. Or as art.

Disagree entirely. I get the feeling that some of the most respected games around (talking about all platforms) are 'art games'. There sure are tons of crappy ones but I'd say games like Ico, Rez, Braid or maybe even Minecraft, just to name a few, are totally 'art games'. And this is slowly starting to happen on the iPhone as well, games like Spirits, Infinity Gene or Osmos are among the artiest things on the platform and rightfully so got the buzz they deserved.

Nova 2 blows me away with its polished and solid multiplayer experience. Games like exoplanet, the first Nova or Archetype were interesting attempts and I enjoyed them to some extent but Nova 2 is the shit.

Didn't have it installed anymore but sync'd it to see. It's the same as it was, though saying it's got micro-transactions out the ass is a bit misleading. There's a track pack for $2.99, giving you 6 tracks (there's 22 in total in the game, minus access to those 6 until you buy the pack). And there's the class 5 car pack for $1.99, but you get class 1-4 and class 6.

If you buy the game and really dig it, you can get a bit more for $5 more. I would prefer that the entire game were in, but they give any sane person more than enough to enjoy without spending an additional $5. Honestly though there are better racing games on the iOS. And frankly the poor performance of RR Accelerated on the 3GS still leaves something to be desired. No where near as it was on launch, but there's still slowdown in spots. And in a racing game any slow down is very bad.

Fine on the iPhone 4 though. Performance wise I mean.

Make a Japanese account and get jubeat plus, it's free with three songs.

In the sense I was talking about "art games" is just a general term for stuff that pushes some style...but not much else, and probably made by people that don't know much about good gameplay/game design or art beyond making things look good. Like I probably wouldn't even think about those as "art games," they're just games with nice aesthetics or "with good art," but that doesn't necessarily make them art.

Of course this all depends on how you feel about art and what you consider to be art which is a monstrous contentious topic itself, then layer gaming on top of it...which is a ridiculous megaton of a debate itself. Short version for myself, when it comes to gaming and art I'm of the school of thought that a medium should be true to itself (which is vague as hell, but basically if you're having fun then all is well).

(Sorry I hate the whole art game thing cause from a gamer perspective it generally results in shitty games, and from an art perspective it generally results as shitty games trying pass themselves off as art. It's not helping the cause!)

Looking back at a review looks like the DLC is still the same, but they added in a lot more to the standard package. When it first came out it had 2 tracks (and opposite) and 18 cars (class 1 and 2).

Ah, I understand. We just have different definitions.

Btw guys Flying Hamster dropped another buck in price, looks great, anyone tried it?
Also, thinking of getting Spirits now that it's $0.99...

For anyone considering that angel game to be art just needs to know that it's bad art mostly if anything. Too heavy handed and accessibility is not welcoming.

Usually games that care less about being art and more a game end up being better art.

Nice to see someone else who enjoys it, game is great imo, bought it before the lite was out so I took a bit of a risk.

I picked it up as well and have been playing it off and on mainly due to wanting to finish other things like Hellsing's Fire which i beat today.

Re: iTunes and their ridiculous lack of re-downloading for music:

Step 1: Join a music sharing community.

Step 2: Download whatever you want.

Step 3: Don't bother backing up your music. We live in the fucking information age. The cloud will never let you down.

Step 4: Buy the music you really love on vinyl. Enjoy on a nice pair of headphones.

Is 'music sharing community' the same as 'bit-torrent site' or are there legit communities that allow you to download? I don't think I could go entirely cloud-based for music storage, sometimes the internet is down and I would go quickly mad without access to my music library.

Speaking of which, downloaded and set up AudioGalaxy this weekend, it's pretty damn impressive. Using my work's always-on wifi to stream music from my home PC is a godsend, I was starting to feel a bit limited by my iPhone's storage. Still, I need some stuff on my actual phone for the journey to and from work where there isn't even 3g let alone wifi.

btw, looking forward to the music episode of Out of the Game, always like it when you guys talk tunes.

Yeah, only if you're willing to get 90% of your music in shitty lossy codecs AND completely forget about the existance of HR audio. Definitely not for me.

Well, it's not as if FLAC communities don't exist.

But yeah, I'd never pay for digital music. I buy these "Compact Discs" when there's an album I want, and then I can rip it to whatever format tickles my fancy. I like the idea of buying Vinyl, but I don't got no working turntables.

Step 3 is dangerous advice as our music is generally stored on the same hard drive as our pictures, videos and other personal documents.

All of this important stuff should always be backed up. Music is just coming along for the ride.

Game Center & OpenFeint's NeoGAFFERS list said:
As support for Gamecenter grows, and Openfeint's not that bad as well, it seemed a good idea to give Gaffers one more reason to check out highscore leaderboards and online multiplayer. Hundred games support the feature now, and more and more are adding it by the day, either out of the gate or with a post-launch patch. Best of the best like Flick Kick Football, Dodonpachi, Bit Trip Beat and Canabalt already have it, and tomorrow your favorite game will too! Steam, Psn and Live friend lists showed us how much friendly competition, or co-operaration, can improve a game we love, and with time iOS will make for great Gamecenter communities as well... The ubiquity of portable platforms will make GC a staple of the gaming experience, Gaffers using GC are playing more games than ever on iOs because it makes the experience so much better... you don't want to miss on that, right?

Hey guys, my father didn't like the iphone 4 they gave him at his job, so he has given it to me (first Iphone update since I bought my faithful 2G haha.) So now I don't need to worry about performance, I would like to increase my gaming library. But instead of bugging you about another "best games for iphone?" post, let me ask another thing: "best site to make a bit of research for myself?" Any page you can recommend?

Great upgrade. I personally recommend this page for game recommendations. Start from the end and go backwards, you won't regret it.

As it is 90% of the stuff out on "communities", that's where you're missing the point.
Besides, at least on iTunes on the mac you can manage apple lossless tracks AND with bit perfect output, something you can't do in iTunes for Windows, where you need to resort to something like Foobar using kernel steeaming or wasapi with Windows 7.
And as I've said, you can just about forget having big libraries with High Resolution audio if you're going on with such communities exclusively.
And even when something comes up it is going away pretty fast, so if you're interested in audiophile tracks you just can't say "go with the clouds entirely which will never fail you".

We'll manage without having to pirate FLACs

flac's not the only lossless codec out there, did you know that?
And why the hell should I even consider resorting to be a pirate to get my music FLAc encoded?
to get the chance to feel superior to everyone else.

Wow. I spot a low self-esteem problem right there buddy.

Not to backseat mod or anything, but HEY GUYS THIS IS THE GAMING THREAD.

Thanks to whoever suggested Big Cup Cricket a few pages back, as I can't stop playing it. I like really simple Cricket games, and this fits the bill well. (And how weird is it that Square-Enix is responsible for it?)

For those who like board/card game translations, maybe keep an eye on BANG!; I guess it's based on a real card game that has a devoted following. No online play or expansions yet, but they swear it's coming.

I don't know how great it is since I only played a few minutes, but it seems pretty polished and the gameplay doesn't anger me, so it's better than a lot of iPhone shooters already. I guess my only complaint so far is that your fingers potentially cover the action, some games really need to have an option to scale down the graphics to give more control space or something.

So I downloaded the Air Tycoon 2 demo cause it looked right up my runway but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing really. With my company, Air Strikes (geddit) I made like 3 routes with all my planes and I've ended my turns/advanced a few months, but don't seem to be getting any money in and erm... not sure what to do next. Anyone played it, know the score?
