I will have to check out Samurai, I might try Ra as well, ive been interested in picking up th actual board game of Ra, but for 5 bucks I will probably just try this first instead.

Any others you or anyone else recommend?
Viking Lords is pretty excellent. I have not tried the online play at all simply because the "quick match" stuff is always sparsely populated and I don't know anyone else who has it.

oh yeah tichu too! not a board game per se but a 2v2 trick taking/card shedding game that is very popular among boardgamers. the current game only has vs. cpu play but it's a pretty good way to learn tichu and i think they're planning on adding netplay in an update.

roll through the ages is another pretty popular one but i haven't been able to get into that one b/c i thought the tutorial was bad

The interface is for shit but stick with it. Once I figured out how to play it's actually a lot of fun. My fiance and I play whenever we are in a restaurant waiting for our food.

Just found this game while searching for a decent RTS, it's called Space Harvest:

Looks like fun, can't wait to get out of work and play it. It's universal too. If you watch the youtube vidja that I posted above, it looks like a combination of base building and RTS/resource management all wrapped up in eboy-esque hotness.

Thought I'd let you guys know.
Update for everyone interested:
I got home that night and played the eff out of it. The game is super difficult but really good if you are into strategy. There is no skirmish mode, only the 9 missions but they are highly replayable with different strategies that can be used to complete the objectives. At $4.99 it can be a bit steep for some people, but I think it's definitely worth it. The game is also BEAUTIFUL in a 16bit way.

I emailed the dev to see if he plans any updates or if it's still supported and here's what he had to say about the future of Space Harvest:

I'm working on a sequel at the moment. I'd have liked to have done more updates for the original game, but as it was my first game, it wasn't the best foundation to build on to add the features people are asking for (multiplayer, skirmish/custom games and difficulty options are top of the list). If you have any suggestions, I'd love hear them! :)

Bottom line if you like strategy games buy it and play the hell out of it. I got it because I like to buy a small number of games that give me a lot of replay value and depth.

I think I will just have to splurge on some games, and pick up Samurai, Tichu, Ra, Catan (not sure why I dont own this yet anyway), and Roll Through the Ages. They all look interesting, and I love me some boardgames.

Unfortunately Viking Lords is an iPad app, so I cant play it, which is too bad, cause it looks interesting.

Sorry for being slightly off topic...didn't someone create a neogaf reader app of some kind? Browsing gaf is slightly difficult :p

Hey, Astrolad (and others), since you seem to be the reference on board games on Gaf, which board game would you personally recommend on the ipad?

A good game would have the combination of

a) Actually being a good board game (a little luck is fine, but i find a game like Carcassonne borderline too luck-driven, independently from the fact that I don't necessarily rock at it)

b) either having AI, or online multiplayer - ideally as good as Carcassonne (i.e. i don't have to stay connected to the game all the time)

c) rich but not needlessly complex in its rules

d) pretty board and stuff :)

Carc comes the closest to meeting all those. Have you played in our GAF games. They really make the game shine for me. I like Carc as a tabletop gateway but I love it as an iOS experience.

Next closest for my money would probably be Neuroshima Hex. This doesn't have online play yet but is supposed to get it soon. And the AI is pretty solid on Hard. The production values on this game rival Carc's and might even exceed it since the game does have more complexity.

Samurai meets a-c and it sounds like a game you might really like since it's a tile-draw but less luck-based than Carc and it also has both netplay and solid AI. I think it's ugly aesthetically but that's just personal preference.

Sad Princess' art looks fantastic. Unfortunately, the game doesn't look that great to me from what I've seen in videos and reviews.

edit: from what I can tell, Knights' Rush is the game to get if you want a really fun, smooth and beautiful experience in the vein of what Sad Princess does. Knight's Rush still has me coming back after many months, it rocks.

Thanks a lot man, really appreciate it. just got neuroshima hex. I'll try to join the GAF carcassonne games, as long as you tolerate total suckers. Might get one of that german dude's games, maybe samurai. or ra, because i played it before.

Anyway, the Chop Chop games have all had price drops lately.
chop chop Soccer is FREE today only and the HD version went from €3 iirc to 79c.
I've read good things about Chop Chop Tennis, Runner and Ninja HD as well, which are all @79c now.
Anybody here has tried any?

Try out the demo at least, but then right after buy it.

Sad Princess looks pretty cool. Will check out later. BTW, does anyone know of a good site to get news on new game releases and reviews? I've pretty much lost all respect for TouchArcade and need a new site. Thanks.

Thanks Jubei, I'll check those out. I was a fan of the site for a long time, until today. Their editor Brad Nicholson posted an article on the subject of Capcom suggesting that perhaps mobile was the way of the future. I wrote a post that posited a contrarian stance to his own with reasons as to why Apple had an uphill battle to fight against Nintendo and Sony and my post was removed from the site with no explanation. Another guy on the site posted something that was along the same lines as he stated that he was a "hardcore" gamer and had qualms with the iPhone's low battery life while playing intensive games and its lack of tactile input resulting in games that weren't a fit for the platform being shoehorned in to lackluster results. Guess what? His post was removed too. I can't respect a site that would go as far as to censor the views of those who have alternative opinions. I found it humorous, because prior to this article, they snuck in some contrarian opinions in previous articles such as (and I'm paraphrasing here) "Crysis was a dull FPS" in their "Crytek on iOS?" article and "I'd take an indie iOS project over the Super Mario Galaxies anyday" in their "They Need to Be Fed" article. That just reeks of hypocrisy and sensationalism.

That is pretty bad, I visit toucharcade for any news or deals and the forums. Kind of bad that editor didn't talk about the other side of mobile/portable gaming.

Here is another site

Not to defend censorship or anything, but may they just thought you were trolling. And not saying you were, just saying it could be seen that way.

Anyway, I,ve always thought touch arcade is full of young people (forever asking others to 'take one for the team', pining over promo codes and such). I just go for the advanced heads up and news.

The line between advertising and editorial is really, really, really thin over at Toucharcade.

And the forum is just painful. They love everything over there.

Don't websites like TouchArcade get paid to post reviews? They made themselves relevant, and now app developers have no choice but to try and get their exposure.

yeah I think I only pay attention to Slide to Play reviews and Appspy Video Reviews (though they are a little loose as well, but the videos give a good idea how they play).

Well guys, in case this thread is locked because of 10,000 posts like the last one was, this has been another great iPhone gaming thread. Lot of great suggestions, really appreciate it.
