The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

Can't sleep.

1. Damn. Battleheart is as great as people say it is. It's so intuitive, polished and fun. And cute. Only completed one battle so far but I think it's phenomenal.

2. The free Kick Buttowski game is actually fun and worth a play to see if you'll like it. You press the screen when the meter hits green and then boost up and right to collect stuff and fly through hoops, raising your score and distance. Surprised at how above decent it is.

3. Help! Does anyone remember the name of a game released a year-ish ago? It was a simple 2d squad shooter, army guys, and you made your wag through an outdoor level. There was a lot of humor like "good thing we bought a bunch of bullets from the app store!"

Is it really that good? Been wondering if I should but it!

Are most games compatible with the iPod Touch as well? I might bite on the next version... And are there any obvious performance differences between iPod Touch and iPhone?

slim to none

Hot Spring Story is poor, very poor.

I absolutely loved Game Dev so I'm determined to stick it out, but it really is a rather shoddy port, but unlike Game Dev where the actual controls were very simple, I don't feel they can get away with it now.

The lack of implementation of Game Center or something similar is also a massive oversight on their behalf, if it's anything like Game Dev, once you have the main mechanics down it's very much a high score driven game... so why make the scores so pointless?

On a side note, how the hell do I rotate buildings? :D Thank you

Really? I thought it was a much better port than Game Dev Story. Granted I've only played it for 15-20 minutes but it looks alot nicer and the ability to change the orientation is pretty awesome.

It's too early for me to comment on it as I'm still not entirely sure what I'm doing, it seems neat though.

I don't think you can rotate every building as I too was having that issue. Unless we are both missing something.

I'm finding myself enjoying Hot Springs Story a lot more than Game Dev Story, granted I'm only a few hours through my first playthrough on Hot Springs.

Game Dev Story was very, very formulaic for me. Choose genre and sub-genre make game, make money, eventually hire better people to get better review scores to make more money and make better games. The player had relatively little control on how the game actually developed.

Hot Springs Story is like the pixel-art version of Sim City. The player has a lot more ability to experiment with how to set up his or her Hot Spring.

I usually don't do this but I really want to find this game so since were on a new page already I want to increase my chances:

I think you're looking for Warpack Grunts, published by Freeverse.

Lack of multitasking, also the lack of Game Center really kill the game for me.

Very (very) lazy programming IMO, and the games aren't cheap either.

I'm starting to think you guys are right though, I should stick with it - but please how do I rotate? I know like random said I'm not expecting *all* buildings to be rotatable, but surely some of them are? I swear it said something about it in the tutorial too, but I stupidly skipped past it...

If they do rotate, I don't have a clue how lol

I'm also not digging hot springs story. Gds was so good though. Maybe I'm not getting into hss because I'm too fresh off of gds.. I'll give it another go in a month or two.

Build a new bath / spring, you'll see a rotate icon in the UI while you're in the placing section of it. I was only able to rotate a spring before I placed it, nothing else had the option.

I didn't figure out how to delete/re-move places, hopefully you can, cause I had blocked off a changing room in my quick go with it.

YES! Thank you so much, I had planned to go through the awful lists and lists of download history to try and find it. Thanks again! You have made my day.
Download history is so, so painful to go through. They need one big fuckin' list. BFL.

They fixed it in the Mac App Store already, so I imagine it's coming to iOS at some point.

Minsc, in Build, first menu, little hammer next to Wood Floor.

I think it's being developed still and we'll probably see The Game Dealer next on the US store

I'm slightly more pumped for this one than Hot Springs. Will wait for that, and may wait for a sale for the Springs. Maybe since it's like acting like a Gamestop, only more evil. I mean, more friendly.

EDIT: And it's late but Tiny Wings is executed soooo well.

how does the mac app store list your item history now?

There's a "Purchases" button right between "Categories" and "Updates". Press the button and you get a nice list of all your purchases, and a button to reinstall next to each app.

OMG, that button is so obvious that it hurts.. :| How blind am I lol

Another 20 minutes and I am really not feeling Hot Spring still, think I'm done with it. The whole point seems to be to simply put things near other things in order to get stat boosts, uhhh...? No.

You can only rotate the baths -- everything else is stuck in its regular orientation. I found that this really only affected the Ping pong table later in the game's life.

This is an older game where they finally released it here after translating/localizing it. My understanding is they put out a new game in Japan at the beginning of the year that we'll get later.. I imagine it will have some more modern updates.

Unfortunately I don't think you're able to move any items. Fortunately money is relatively easy to come by but you don't get any savings, etc. for removing an item.

You have to wisely position facilities/stores/rooms. There is a compatibility guide that lets you know what works best (or doesn't work) in conjunction with others. You obviously have to balance the scenery score as well.

It really is such a poor, slow and cluttered system and I'd expect something much better from Apple. I was dreading having to skim through those pages of clusters.

I hope so. At first I thought it was an oversight, then I thought it was a system to confuse you and cause erroneous purchases. Having to hit that purchase button and waiting 3 seconds, hoping the "This is free" notification pops up is a cruel move. I'm not sure which it is anymore but I'm sure it sucks.

Here are a few pics of my Inn at the end of the game.

That's already been fixed on iPad. You don't see "buy" anymore, you see "install". I'm not sure why that hasn't rolled out to iPhone yet, but it's coming.

Argggg is it time for the Ipad 2 announcement yet! Really hoping the rumors of it being on sale within the next two weeks(possibly in the next few days)are true! Unlike most of you I do not own an Ipad, phone or any other mac product so I am excited to be able to start gaming!

I think Backgrounder is supposed to be better

but isn't backgrounder lets the app to be fully running on background which loses you battery much faster. I've been using Go native for a couple of months and it didn't affect my battery life at all

I recently completed Boom Boat and can recommend it. It starts off rather slowly but gets more interesting as you progress. Overall it's a little too easy, but an update with more levels and also a graphical overhaul is in development.

Jimmy Stav said:
Does leaving apps "open" in the background effect performance at all?

It shouldn't, but sometimes it can take a few seconds to reach full speed while the device is cycling it's memory or poorly coded apps may complain about a lack of memory. Pretty much all multi-tasking is in iOS4 is just suspending an app's state and resuming it if it hasn't been cleared from memory by something else.

There might be the oddball app like a run/walk monitoring app or a radio app that is still clearly running while in the background, but that's definitely an exception for games.

Pumped for the iPad 2 announcement and fully taking advantage of the apple premium as I always do and selling my current iPad for a mere $110 discount. Seems like we're talking some serious horse power for gaming.
