Kind of a silly question but if I already have Angry Birds is there any need for Angry Birds Rio?

Also, I still hope PopCap updates Peggle with retina support and GameCenter.

.

"need" no, you don't need it. But if you really like the series, then you'd probably think this one is worth 99 cents too.

Hey Gaf,

This all started from the underwhelming iPad/iPhone game Artificial Life HD...

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but i'm really looking for a game that captures the feeling of watching an ecosystem grow from infancy to full on death. I guess the best way to describe it is The SIMS meets SPORE (PC), minus the intense micromanagement. NOT Farmville, though...

I want to be able to create a creature (or simply have my choice of pre-selects), define how long i want a given cycle to be (ie, 5 minutes or twenty days), and roughly define the world through pre-selected variables (harsh environment, easy environment, etc), then simply watch my 'creature' grow and evolve over time. Does it develop social structure? Does it become nomadic? Does it bond and multiply with another creature? Does it live off the land? Almost like letting an RTS game play itself on Cinema mode. That's FUN to watch!!

I guess the AI for something like that would be pretty complex, but sometimes I'm sitting at my desk and I'd love to just sit back and enjoy a graphically detailed relatively complex simulator that I can check in on.

I'd totally purchase in-app IAP for new species or something...

But ultimately, I want to watch my tamogotchi dude/creature/spore - grow, evolve, fight, and die in a fairly detailed world.

I like The Sims or Sim City, but sometimes the joy is in just watching what you've created 'live' on its own. I don't want to micro EVERY five minutes, but i WOULD love to interact every once in a while just to screw around with the variables GOD-style, just to see if it changes the world. Also, by WORLD, i don't just mean my creature, but the others around it. Do the creatures get religion by erecting some icon? what would happen if I threw in some totem or something?

There just arent' enough cosmic simulators on the iPAD, which is wacky considering that the device would be awesome for it. I just enjoy watching little creatures do their thing....

Is there anything like this in development by any of you, or does anything like this currently exist on the iPad?? I guess the CLOSEST to this would be the 4x Space strategy genre...

...but i want to be a little closer to the 'people'. I love the seriousness of tone of the 4x, though...

Recommendations?

EDIT: it just occurred to me that what I'm looking for is basically a digital ANT COLONY for iPAD... hmmmm.....

There are two new armies available as IAPs for Neuroshima Hex. I think the game is on sale too -- don't remember the normal price though. One of the best board games on iOS -- would probably be my #1 if it had asynchronous online play, but even without it it's such a high-quality production.

May be a good thing it doesnt, as it would be one more game to get owned in.

Not a big fan of the 'sliding tiles' type puzzles - which is one of the types featured - but The Heist has been a good diversion today anyway.

i am blown away that macheist has the ability to push a game to #1. Totally blown away.

Has anyone played it?
Yeah, I checked it out a bit today. It's really cool. I'm not gonna spoil anything, but the presentation is pretty damn cool. At first I was surprised, "like wtf" then I go "that's awesome!"

But as far as gameplay goes.. it's a little basic. There's (I think) 4 types of puzzles, with there being slide the tile, lining up wires, a sudoku-like game, and one more, all with increasing difficulty as you progress. Nothing too difficult so far.

If you're okay with it just being a simple puzzle game, then go for it.

What's the word on the next iPod touch being more than 64GB? I'd really like to pick one up in the future, but 64GB isn't really enough for me.

New line should be coming end of summer, should (hopefully) bump up the memory.

Just played some more Rage, only moved on to the second level recently since I was having too much fun trying to master the first one on Nightmare (and eventually did, bitchez! only 135 people on the leaderboards did this!). I now notice that the second and third levels really throw a lot more at you at the same time. They might not be much harder to master on Hard than the first but they give soooo much room to improve your score (try getting all mutilations, pickups and bullseyes on Asylum or Bunker, holy shit!). Anyway, I friggin' love this game and always feel compelled to post when I've played it because it was dismissed as a shallow on-rails shooter while it's actually incredibly well balanced and challenging on Hard & Nightmare.

Also I've been really getting used to Asphalt 6's weird physics (btw it controls damn well when you use the 'left/right half of the screen as buttons' scheme) and I've been getting a real kick out if it. Definitely one of the most enjoyable games I've played on the iPhone and it brings a level of action, eyecandy and sense of speed that I haven't felt ever since I played the old Wipeout games. You really need to be willing to try to get used to pretty some pretty odd drifting physics but the good news is there is actual logic to them and while they may seem dodgy, you can master them perfectly when you get a feel for it. Thought I was gonna get tired of this game and see it as a clunky attempt from Gameloft to clone Burnout but I have now completed the whole game and will definitely keep playing it to unlock everything, it rawks!

64GB not enough? I guess if you have a ton of videos and music that can also add up. I had originally thought about going to a 64GB for the 5th gen, but I might be OK with a 32GB again. I guess it really depends on if the games start to increase in file size with the larger horsepower of these devices.

I hate it when games I'm really excited about get announced, and then we go months without news, and it goes so long that I end up completely forgetting about it.

Fuck you NA Ghost Trick.

Does anybody know why I keep getting asked to update games that I've had for ages, even if the update is dated for sometime before I downloaded it? Surely I should already have the latest version?

The update prompts come at sporadic intervals as well. Just now I've been asked to update Dead Space HD, PixelSlime and DOFUS: Battles HD. Apparently the last update for Dead Space was in January and I purchased the game about a month or so ago. It's like my games are constantly outdated.

This happened to me with Pix'n Love Rush last week. There was a new update, but it was trying to install the old one. It fixed itself a few hours later and let me have the new update. So maybe those games have updates incoming.

Still enjoying First Touch Soccer. I've managed to score some great goals so far. X2 nailed the controls.

Secret of Mana got an update. I got all excited that it would support retina, but it just adds additional languages or something:(

You must be looking for it on an iPhone. It's been out since original iPad launch, just to clarify.

I only have an iPad so I thought it would be right. Sorry about that.

You're right, I just checked the actually app pages for those games and they were recently updated. I guess the date shown on the update notifications is actually the release date of the game and not the update.

Yep, it's called Fieldrunners for iPad. 7.99.
Not even close to being worth it. So many better TD apps than Fieldrunners. The devs of that game seem really cocky too just because they were first on iOS. Only including a small number of maps and charging IAP for single extra maps is crazy. The Creeps gives you 10 times as many apps for a fraction of the price.

What would you suggest for tower defense? I already have Bloons TD4 which is awesome, any other suggestions would be welcome. :)

Of the many TD apps on the store, Fieldrunners is one of the few that i still enjoy. Hi-rez art is large, detailed, and looks MARVELOUS, the sfx is very satisfying when chaos is on the screen, and while i wish there were even more levels, I can't complain about what's there. I never really connected with some of the other popular TD games (Sentinel 1-3 comes to mind), but Fieldrunners remains one of the showcase TD games on the iPad imo...

Also, I still love CRYSTAL WARS....

Anyone know any Diablo style games other then Dungeon Hunter 1 and 2?

Not mentioned on GAF much, and it's not fantasy, but if you enjoy overhead grinds, AFTERMATH is fantastic. I have the iPAD and still play this iPHONE game with the crappy rez on this device...

There's a new one called Dofus Battles which looks promising. It's like Final Fantasy Tactics meets TD mixed with a ridiculous amount of gear like in WOW.

Plants vs Zombies is a must-have classic, Guns N Glory is also great, GeoDefense is another favorite, along with the already mentioned Defender Chronicles. Sentinel 3 is also great, just got a huge update. Tower Madness as you're no doubt aware is free. Then there's Gemcraft, iBomber TD, LotR TD, and branching off a bit to stuff like Dungeon Defenders, Crystal War, Vampire Rush, Bug Heroes, and on and on and on and on to infinity. There's probably around 1000 castle/tower defense games.

I actually find FieldRunners really boring, and didn't even list it, but as you see above, others pick it over everything else. There's so many TD/CD apps, it's impossible to list them all.

Finally bought Sword & Sorcery EP.

A really awesome game! You're great, Capy guys!

But please, translate it. Some texts are a bit difficult for me. :(

I don't know about Final Fantasy Tactics. it plays more like Plants vs Zombies that once u deployed ur unit on a spot it can't move, but it will attack enemies nearby or on its POV.
U get some orbs (like sun from PvZ) to spend for units

I say more like FFT (inspired TD). Battles take place on a grid that enemies approach from multiple directions. Your units attack in the grid in all directions. There's the stereotypical classes like in FFT, Fighters, Archers, Mages, Summoners, etc Archers have a longer range than fighters but can take less damage.

Your units do move, between waves (of the same level), each unit has a movement amount, some higher than others and you can use that to adjust tactics. The orbs do bring a PvZ feel, but it's got much more of a FFT feel imo. And the ridiculous number of weapons and armor to outfit your units with is a lot different than PvZ as well.

One of the bigger differences imo is not you're not filling every last square of the board in this game, like in PvZ / PvZ clones. In PvZ, I'd usually only have 3-4 empty squares at the end of levels, from what I've seen of this, you're lucky if you can occupy 1/4th the square on the board. I don't believe there are units that make sun, nor do you get random sun/orbs from the sky during levels.
