Sonic 4 will cost $12.99 on US App Store.

Well, we get 2 exclusive levels and it's cheaper compared to console versions.
I wouldn't exactly say the 2 exclusive levels are a good thing. The two levels that iOS gets are levels that were taken out of all other versions due to complaints about them.

(Sonic 4) Better be 60 fps. If it's not, they may as well have just cancelled the iPhone version.
I guess there's a reason you have that tag. Guess that's the first thing you notice about a game? Such a curse.

And how can puzzle agent be updated for retina and still look 'crap' on iphone 4? Do people just not like the art style? Because the cutscenes seem wonderfully done, probably the biggest selling point since the puzzles supposedly aren't that great.

Yeah same, seems like apps really drain the batteries.

Goes the same for iPhone 4. If I use any app for 5-10 minutes it takes a couple percent. I have every battery sucking feature off too.

Edit: Also, would anyone be interested in a My Life as a King clone for the iPhone? Or is there one around?

Looks like it's $9.99, not $12.99.

I'm new to the ipod/iphone gaming scene but this just seems like way too much considering that you are only getting the first installment. At $5 I would've though about it, at $10 I'll wait for it to go on sale for $2.

The iPhone 4 is the only modern iDevice I own or have ever owned.
Or smartphone. So I can only vouch for how SFIV runs on that.

And it does not run well.
There's a slight but noticeable jitteriness to the game's performance, and the touch controls simply do not work for a precision fighting game. The combo system is also stripped down and broken. For the record, I'm hardly a fight stick elitist, and I got all 150 stars in Super Mario 64 DS. I can deal with less than ideal controls. SFIV on the iPhone might be a sort of impressive technical achievement, but it's easily the shittiest portable fighting game I own.
I'm not sure it's really a big technical achievement...isn't it all prerendered sprites on the iPhone version? I'm guessing they didn't render every possible frame and it's playing at 30fps or something.

Does anyone else have an ipod touch 4th gen? I feel like I have to charge this thing every 2 days damn it.
Wow, we really have become spoiled. The 6 AA batteries that powered my Sega Genesis Nomad lasted 2 hours.

Cut The Rope HD is beyond awesome. Just finied Carboardboxm and 3 stared everything :D

I have not played the iPhone version, but I feel like I could get annoyed playing it on a screen smaller than the iPad. Seems like the extra screen real estate makes a difference here.

That's why I said 'might' and 'sort of.'
I didn't think it was impressive in the least! :D

Military Madness: Neo Nectaris went on sale for iPhone. Was $5... now is $1. Don't know if it's any good, but picked it up as a blind impulse buy. Also got that Cut the Rope HD game.

Military Madness:Neo Nectaris for iPhone reduced $4.99->0.99. Oldschool Turbografx-16 game that's the predecessor to Advance Wars.
(EDIT: Oh we posted at the same time)

For the GLU games, I grabbed the Bonsai Blast game - it is in the style of puzzloop/luxor/zuma. It's quite good actually, definitely grab it while it is still free!

I tried all the other free GLU games. Bonsai is the only decent one. Mainly because they're all really early iphone games, and just feel like weak ports from flash/cell phone games.

You must not have seen many. It's not ridiculous to have standards.
It won't kill me if Epic Citadel winds up being a good game with performance issues.
I'll be there day 1, because I love fantasy RPGs. Especially ambitious and portable ones.

But if you're going to show off your technology with a glorified fly-by that already evidences performance issues; one that (understandably, being a tech demo) lacks ANY of the gameplay features (characters, enemies, AI, interaction elements) that would further bog down an engine, how the hell am I supposed to be impressed?

As I posted before, I'm convinced that it was rushed out the door to make the Apple event, and I'm confident that it'll all come together into a suitably impressive (and hopefully enjoyable) game package. I'll reserve "jaw dropping" for something more than a collection of pretty textures that look better in stills than in motion. Hopefully, it'll smashingly apply to the full game.

Spot on. Citadel looks visually impressive at a glance until you start breaking it down. No doubt I never thought I'd see visuals like this on a phone this soon and its impressive with that regard, but at what cost which you break down nicely. Not to mention that the lighting looks baked in this demo. If it's not, they certainly didn't do anything to show off dynamic lights.

whitehawk said:
Is mirrors edge any good? It's 60% off right now at $1.99.
Hell yes. It's a really clever and fun game.

Citadel is TECH DEMO. Stop treating it like a game prototype. It's never intended to be a full game.

Sonic 4 is super impressive, but it's a shitty Sonic game. I'd recommend passing on it, or waiting for a sale.

I have a question. Why the hell isn't Loco Roco on the App store. It's the PERFECT game for the iPod touch.

Is it owned by sony?
Yes it is, and Sony has this handheld system of their own they'd rather sell than make ports for the iPhone (although, it would be delicious irony if they eventually caved and did so). Also, Rolando and Rolando 2 is the answer to your latter question.

Cut The Rope is easily, easily the best game I've ever played on the iPhone. It is just so, so well done, the gameplay and controls are flawless and couldn't be done on any other system, the difficulty ramp up is perfect, and the levels are SO WELL DESIGNED. Everything about this game is perfect. This is like, my perfect iOS game. I have never been drawn into an app like this except for possibly Doodle Jump, and Cut the Rope is just so, so much better at everything.

The only thing that saddens me is that I bought it yesterday, and I'm already on the 4th Box. It's not that it's short, it has 100 levels, but that just means I've been playing it non-stop and I'm sad it'll be over soon. But that outlined box promising more levels in the future has me hopeful. :)

This game is so good. This is what gaming is about. There are some levels that are hard, and you're like "YES" when you finally 3-Star them, but there are some levels that aren't so much hard as you just have to work quickly and pull off all kinds of tricks and you're just like "FUCK YEAH!!" when you do it because you just feel awesome. :lol

I hope it gets Retina Display graphics soon.

Also, in the later levels, does it load really slow for anyone else when you complete a level? Like, I'll get 3 stars, the candy drop into OM-NOM's mouth, he eats it, and then the game just stalls. The music keeps playing, but nothing is moving, and then after a few seconds the score screen comes up. I've tried rebooting my phone, nothing. I don't want to uninstall the app because I don't want to lose my save (I have 3 stars on all but 2 levels so far, wahaha). Anyone else?

Fake Edit: Just saw that the iPad version is out. Don't think I'm gonna bite because I totally feel like this should have just been an update to make it a universal app. There's no extra shit in the iPad version that's not in the iPhone version. It's Angry Birds/Angry Birds HD all over again.
And on that note, to the person who said they thought the extra screen space would be better: not necessarily. There are times when you needs to cut multiple ropes at once and doing that with both thumbs while holding the phone is much, much easier than resting the iPad somewhere to use both index fingers.

I also like this game more than Angry Birds. AB feels like it's more luck than skill. This game makes me remember what fun games can be when they're done right. That's not to say AB is bad, though, and I really, really hope that the team keeps it updated like AB has been. Imagine if they added a second monster in the box, and there were two pieces of candy you had to guide through the levels at the same time. Oh God the insanity!

So some second impressions on pes2011:

Its good, but its dissapointingly only a small yearly adjustment compared to what it should be, it feels much more like a patch than a new game, which for the price point makes it near impossible to recommend. The goalkeepers and shooting are perhaps the most dissapointing aspect. Football games live and die on their shooting and keeping, most people can forgive anything, hell they did with previous pes versions over the years (no licenses, few teams, no options, no modes) because the gameplay, especially the scoring, was given so much finese. In pes2011 the shooting is automatic, save for penalties, and feels like there is only 2 ways to score, every shout gets the same 1 of 4 animations out of the keeper and the most likely goal comes from the parry into oncoming striker, bam, goal.

I dont know whether iphone sales for the franchise dont justify any real effort but its sad to see another year where Fifa gets the scoring right but fucks up the gameplay and pes gets the gameplay right but fucks up the scoring :/, makes both hard to recommend as both feel really incomplete and are hard to enjoy for prolonged periods.

Yep, noticed that myself

I just played the hell out of Cut the Rope HD, and have three started all available levels except the very last one, which I two stared...

...MOAR LEVELS!!

Same here, I assume they'll fix this soon.

Thats annoying, as it has game center support doesn't it? So having two separate apps means it won't track your progress properly. Anything with gamecenter should be a universal app.

I do prefer playing on the ipad, but there are some games that aren't automatically better for the larger size - I'm not a huge fan of flight control HD for example - too much movement involved, I like the flicks on the smaller ipod touch version.

Mmm, cut the rope. I feel so bad when I fuck up and om-nom makes that sad face and grunts cause I lost his candy. Best motivator ever, even better than dying in smb!

Such a great game!

So I'll definitely get Modern Combat 2 and Cut the Rope (and PES 2011 when it appears on the US store).

Is Sonic 4 worth the purchase? I've heard extremely mixed reviews on this one.

Yes I am coming off having an ipod nano whose battery lasted long as hell. I just didn't expect battery life to be so poor on the ipod touch.

The battery life is way better on the iPod touch than your iPod nano. You're doing much more than playing music. Come on.

The touch can play 40 hours of music. The nano can play 24 hours.

If you like games with ropey frame-rates, imprecise controls, very little content and absolutely no charm, you'll be well away with Sonic 4.
