Combat's a bit blah, but there's a fairly lengthy (so far) story to follow that literally takes you from faction to faction, and tons of missions to take on the side. Some are just your randomly generated trade X number of product Y missions, or kill Z number of enemy faction A missions, but there's a good amount of story and/or faction-based missions to accept as well, which are typically more involved and at least somewhat unique.
The trading economy is pretty robust and not too difficult to follow, and actually a viable way to make money. Reading the galactic news updates when making port makes for some good trading tips, and is generally very fun and tongue-in-cheek. Sci fi geeks will catch loads of references (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.)
Purchasing new ships and upgrading them is insanely fun. Hunting out hidden asteroids throughout the many worlds and systems is both engaging and rewarding. Each asteroid is basically worth a certain amount of cash every 5 or so minutes of real time, so the more you claim/mine, the more the money keeps rolling in, even if you're bogged down on a lengthy and not very rewarding story mission.
It's not perfect, but it gets a lot right, IMHO. One of my favorite App Store purchases, up there with The Quest, Space Miner, Rimelands, and a few others. Despite the relatively simple graphics and weak combat, I'm liking it better than Ultraviolet Dawn and way, way better than Galaxy on Fire.
