depends on your source material.

as in, if your source is DVD, it's max (best) resolution will be its default and the iPhone will scale the resolution accordingly.

if your source is from HD-DVD, Blu-Ray or some other HD source, you'll be able to scale it in Handbrake down to the proper width for the iPhone (height will scale automatically to keep everything proportional unless you want to change that, which you can).

HD sources take longer to transcode/re-encode than SD sources.

My wife wants a car remote for her iPhone. I've been looking around online but can't find anything anywhere. She just wants to change songs without having to mess with the iPhone each time (so she doesn't get distracted and crash).

I've only been able to find a couple options, and they all include a dock that won't fit the new iPhone. This seems like something that should be available - a little remote that operates via bluetooth and attaches to the steering wheel or something, but I can't find anything simple like that.

Any help?
Does she know about the voice command? Hold the home button and use voice commands. Works better than I thought it would.

Speaking of voice command, does anyone have a guide to what commands are available including new ones introduced in iOS4?

So what happened with the reception issue? Seems that it is not as widespread as thought? I'm not really hearing too much about outside of Gizmodo. :lol

Okay I know I'm beating a dead horse here with the battery life thing, but the day is almost over and I know my 3G was never this far drained by using it in the same manner. I've only been in my email once and done moderate texting all day. I'm currently at 34%. My usage says 3 hours, 23 minutes while standby is 8 hours, 9 minutes. You can tell me I'm crazy but this just seems really bad to me...

not normal. how many background tasks do you have going?

also, is the phone unusually warm? if so, you might just want to reinstall the OS.

I regularly have been killing them to ensure it wasnt a background process. Doesn't seem warm at all. Should I restore the phone and see if it makes a difference? I was thinking of stopping by to talk to Apple, but I know they wont have any replacements in stock...

I'd definitely talk to Apple about it.

I suspect they'll tell you to restore and see what your battery life does over the next few days.

that's what I would do. and have done it and had great success in the past. if it persists, I'd exchange it.

When I restore do I do it from a backup or not?

you'd restore the phone with the iOS4 software. it's independent of your backups.

after the restore, you'll be able to restore your previous iPhone backup, which is fine to use.

What Gtalk app is everyone else using? I've been on eBuddy for the past week, but I hate that it has to load everytime i read a message.

Is there any gtalk app that is optimized for iOS4 right now?

Naka: do you push notifications or push email turned on?

Apple apparently doesn't give a fuck. They just sold 1.7 million iPhones and have more people in line if anyone is so pissed off as to return the phone (not even Marty Chinn is taking his back yet). Granted they're selling mostly to the loyal Apple fans at the moment (about 75% of iPhone 4 first day buyers were upgrading from an older iPhone) so it remains to be seen how the more finicky customers will react to the issue and whether Apple can get away with their nonchalant attitude if the problems persist indefinitely...

but...when is that useful? if you can push the home button, the screen is going to light up...with the time on it.

no?

Think you are running, with ipod playing... press middle button... "What time is it?" "Current time is: time for you to pick me out of your pocket and press the home button".

Thanks I'll backup my phone when I get home and try this. I'm glad someone else agrees my battery life seems shitty.

Eh...I wouldn't go that far just yet.

Steve pretty quickly changed "hold it differently then, lol!" to "stay tuned", so I'm hoping they're planning...something!

No clue what, but something!

no?

When you're using a Bluetooth headset. The phone could be in your pocket and you just tap your headset to speak the voice command.

I use Beejive but that also does other services.

How much do push notifications suck up your battery life? I have it turned on for everything so far. :lol

Get about 48 hrs worth of standby + some talktime + web surfing + some mp3 playback and other crap.

My phone no longer feels warm while listening to a podcast. There must have been something running in the background which was helping drain the battery faster. On my third podcast, did some light browsing, and downloaded new version of Beejive. Now at 58% which has been about 8.5 hours since I unplugged it this morning. Seems like I could get comfortably by one day, but seems unlikely I could stretch it to two days. Stats say 4 hours, 7 minutes of usage, and 8 hours and 40 minutes of standby. Hmm that doesn't seem to add up since it has not been 12 hours since I unplugged it this morning. It has been about 8 hours and 40 minutes though.

Not sure why people are complaining about the battery. I'm currently getting a full day or more out of mine. And that's with extreme use. I.e, 2 hours of WiFi or 3G web browsing, constant 3G network, Google Maps, over 25 texts, an 1 hour or so of calls, 1-2 hours of MP3 playback at around 60% volume, Solitaire or gaming for 2-3 hours (if I'm not playing it, one of my friends usually is), checking the News and World Cup app over 3G/WiFi every hour or so, using the London Underground app multiple times, constant use of the camera and/or video recording, multiple uses of Facebook and WhatsApp (with notifications turned on) and more. It's pretty much getting used throughout the day.

When I'm not using it, from the time I've gone to sleep to the time I've woken up, it's usually only lost 2-3% of the total battery.

P.S, I used to get more usage out of the battery on the first and second day of purchase, but that was at default brightness. I now have it at around 60% with auto lighting turned on. I don't really need much more than a day, to a day and a bit.

Comparatively, under the same usage my old Nokia N95 8GB wouldn't last the day, and my old 3GS and HTC Desire barely half the day.

Lastly, has anyone else noticed an improvement in audio quality from MP3 playback via headphones? I'm using a pair of Shure SE530's and I could swear that not only is there less sibilance, but more overall detail and slightly more controlled, punchier bass. Either way, in terms of MP3 audio, iPhone storms ahead yet again. Besting the two previous winners, the N95 8GB and the 3GS.

Shame the loud speaker volume is still atrociously quiet...

AT&T opens up at 7AM with their phones tomorrow. I'm going to try to line up around 5:30 or 6AM. Hopefully all the lineup people are done.

Called Apple. I will be able to swap my phone out when ever I make it to a apple store, I am probably going to wait until the whites are more abundant. Not worried about dropping or scratching this one, just gotta keep it dry.

Is this universal? Store near me already closed to I can't check.

I am also getting awesome battery life.

Was in a Edge area but was on the phone or surfing the web (mostly NeoGAF) for 2 hours and when I came home from work battery was still at 75%. That is pretty insane. Though I don't really understand how the iPhone measures usage. It seems pretty inaccurate. One day I was literally using the phone none stop for 4 hours (either calling or on Facebook, web, etc.) and the when I got home the phone said I usage was like 3 hours and a few minutes. And sometimes I feel I use it less than what the phone seems to think.

I'm still waiting on a fix for the iPad WiFi problem--a problem of which the cause has been identified, is entirely software related, and Apple has already promised a fix--so I'm a little bitter :/

Same for the stores here in Burbank/N. Hollywood.

Already maybe 10 people in line. I'll probably get my start at 5:30. 1.5 hours isn't very long to wait. I think the store closest to me has maybe 150 phones. If the line isn't looking good, I'll bolt for a store that I'm sure will have some.

Anyone know how to get a PDF into iTunes or the phone?
CMD+O/CTRL+O to import PDFs into iTunes or just drag them visually into the library.

Get the iBooks app from the App Store.

Sync.

Profit.

Alternatively, if you open a PDF on the iPhone you'll see an option to view it on iBooks (if installed) and that'll keep it sitting there on the app.

Just drove by my local AT&T for shits n' gigs to see if I should bother waking up tomorrow. There are about 12-15 people already waiting. I live in a medium size town in Indiana for reference. I guess I get to sleep in tomorrow.

Yeah I was seriously thinking of getting the new iphone to replace my 3G but I refuse to support something with such a bad hardware flaw. I don't even know if it would affect me and the way I hold the phone but it just seems arrogant to allow something like that out the door.

Oh well....I guess I will get the iphone 5....

Just thought I'd post a quick update about my battery life issue. I went to the Apple store tonight and they agreed what I'm seeing isn't normal. Unfortunately they were super packed so they scheduled me an appointment tomorrow evening. Hopefully I'll get it resolved. I'm still going to do the restore tonight for the hell of it. One of the dudes at the Apple store said to do that too but he said not to use my old backup settings. Based on what was said in this thread that shouldn't be an issue though.
