Yes, as with any phone.

That's what I thought. My wife just got a new car that has bluetooth built into the dashboard and I said you'll probably want to disable/enable it as you leave/enter the car to save battery life, and the car salesman was like "It doesn't affect battery life. I have an iPhone and it's fine."

And I'm thinking "shut the fuck up".

It doesn't effect the battery life that much when connected and on standby, much more if you're using it for a phone call or streaming music from the device. I never turn off bluetooth, and when it's connected to my car but not actively being used I see no major battery drain.

Think about it this way: your average bluetooth headset has around 200 hours of standby time before you need to charge, and that battery is TINY.

I have a USB port on my car, and have been using it to power my iPhone for the commute every day. I plug it in for the 30 minute drive, listen to music, and do the same on the way home. I know it isnt supposed to affect battery life by plugging it in all the time like that, but I am super paranoid about killing the battery early on this thing.

That's exactly how I used my iphone, don't worry about it. I've actually read that lithium-ion batteries do better with short bursts of charge anyway.

Does leaving bluetooth enabled on the iPhone4 affect the battery life considerably?
I've left Bluetooth turned on for the past 6 months, since I upgraded to a Bluetooth car receiver, and it's fine. It's barely made a dent in my overall battery life.

The car salesman was right.

The 30 minute drives each way dont feel like short bursts to me. I gain about 10% each way. I think I am just being overly paranoid because of issues I have had with my iMac this past week and am worried about all my electronics going poopy.

Just use it and don't worry about it. New electronics paranoia is hard to get over, I know. But you can do it!

So I've read through parts of this thread but I still need some advice.

I am a cheap phone user (2 year contracts, get the free upgrade when I'm eligible) and right now I'm using the Motorola Karma (I HATE this thing). I have never had a smart phone before and I feel like iPhone is where I need to be heading. I'm willing to shell out the money for a better phone.

The thing is my contract ends in August, which means I will be able to upgrade. But do I jump in right away and get the iPhone 4? Or Should I wait for the inevitable new(er) version? Are there STRONG predictions as to when the new one will launch? I really want to wait for the newest one instead of buying the iPhone 4 then feeling like ass when the next one launches, but I REALLY cant stand my current phone and am very excited to join the smart phone rage.

TLDR - Any solid dates for iPhone5? Or should I just jump on iPhone4 now?

Any advice?

Who is your provider?

If Verizon then you should probably get on the unlimited data deal (although if you can't upgrade then the iPhone is going to be really expensive). The deal ends on July 7th so if you're not going to get in on it until August then I would wait for the iPhone 5 in this case too.

If at&t then I would wait until the iPhone 5.

AT&T is my provider....you think I should wait? Are there strong rumblings on how long I'll have to wait?

I'm in the same boat as you but I'm rocking an old school RAZR and really don't mind it.

I will wait for the iPhone 5 to be my first smart phone.

I got the iPhone 4 from at&t just a week or so ago myself. It was hard for me to wait any longer (because of my particular situation) but if you can wait then I think the iPhone 5 is rumored to come around September, maybe October.

I would probably wait until the end of August before buying one. Chances are that if you haven't heard about the iPhone 5 by then, then it won't be coming this year. If you have then you know how long you can wait.

I was going to do this until it looked like it cost $9.99 a month to use. Unless I'm mistaken...?

You are mistaken.

E.g. try this link. Click on "Get iPhone Ringtone" and look under "My Ringtones". On the right is the download-button. You don't need to have the system send you the ringtone to you via SMS.
You can also upload your own song for that matter.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm going to wait. It's killing me b/c I really want to join the smartphone "Master Race" but I hate being burned on technology updates. Guess the Karma will have to do. Worst phone ever.

o lawd, the upgrade will rock your world.

I jumped from a Moto PEBL to the iPhone 4 and I was creaming myself over the simplest things like being able to watch a Youtube video. :lol

End of August... that's the start of September, two months from now. we should know a lot more by then, so just bide your time and stop obsessing about it.

buy one of the decent cheap phones then to tide you over. you should be able to get the iPhone 2G or the Palm Pixi Plus for less than $100 without contract and then wait until the iPhone 5 is out.

You will be all smiles once you get a hold of your iPhone ;)

Thanks. I was about to have them send it to me until I realized that it wanted me to enter the code so it could charge me. I found the download button. Awesome.

Now if only I could make custom text tones...

I did not read the whole thread, but is 4.3.3 sluggish for anyone else?

Its not uber slow, but its not as smooth as the older firmwares.

yes i did a full phone restore/reset with no apps on it etc, still slower

Haven't noticed a change in speed.

I have been looking to upgrade from my 3gs to a 4. Judging on history, will there be a nice price drop come August or September?
The next iPhone will be coming out around September... according to rumor.

They'll have to drop the iPhone 4 price then... but won't you just want the 5 at that point? ;)

Lighter is always good, but I honestly do not need my phone to be thinner. When I can't use my iPhone 4 as an iPod out in the sun as it is, I will take that extra thickness. Not to mention the possibility to not reduce battery size.

And that I would really like my iPhone to have an optical zoom, even at 2x, so that I can replace my digital camera once and for all.

On my fourth iPhone 4 now. Sort of hilarious all the random issues that they'll swap out the entire phone for. Can't complain considering it's free.

1st: Power button sunk into unit.
2nd: Home button issues and lamping of the backlight at the top.
3rd: Home button became depressed in unit.

At an Apple Store?

Weird problem that I swore I've been able to do before.

So on my wife's iPhone, I added a bunch of lectures from mp3s she downloaded. I right clicked and did Get Info on them and changed them from music to Podcast. They just completely disappeared after that. Can't find it on the phone, can't find it in iTunes and it won't let me add them again because the sync thinks they are on the phone. No way to remove them either.

I swore I've done this before for at least audio books and I thought podcasts too. How do I fix this?

Good choice. When I got the 3G as my first smartphone I was blown away by everything lol. I literally spent a whole day the phone downloading apps.

I actually measure my iPhone 4 against the new iPod Touch. If it's going to be that thin, then I'm not upgrading. It's massively different. I wouldn't feel secure holding a device that thin in my hands.

Hehe. I'm currently waiting for my 5th one. Sent it off to Apple this time (I'm in New Zealand; we don't have Apple retail stores) rather than going through Vodafone who take a long time with repairs.

1st: "This accessory is not optimised for this iPhone" (with no accessories connected). Message popped up every 2-3 minutes and was killing the battery overnight.

2nd: Battery (the replacement of iPhone 4 #1) was atrocious. Would hit about 70% after an hour of standby.

3rd: Home button stopped working. Would have to press it about 8 times to register. Made multitasking a bitch.

4th: Horizontal scanlines appear across the whole screen. I tried to live with it for months but it just ends up frustrating me when trying to view photos etc., especially when all my other units had perfect screens. I think the screen on this one is too blue also. This issue has shown up elsewhere: http://thedice.net/iphone4/

5th: (waiting on Apple to diagnose & send back a replacement). Fingers crossed it's a winner.

Getting my first smartphone before school/around August as an early B-day present and I'm on the fence about whether I should get a Droid or wait till September(?) for the iPhone 5. Any spec rumors on it? Will it rival Bionic and Galaxy II's dual-core processors? I think iOS has a much better app store, but I also want to be sure my phone will still be able to hold it's own 2 years down the road.

well, it’s practically a lock it will have the dual core A5 currently in the ipad but likely down clocked for heat concerns. it’s sure fast on the ipad, I’ll say that

I don’t know if it’ll be faster than whatever the fastest android phone will be in the fall but iPhones are generally competitive in speed when they launch.

I really hope the "Iphone 5 " does come out soon, really overdue for upgrade but don't want to get it and the ip5 comes out a month later :S

Well, according to some, Bloomberg is on the right way with their news that the iPhone 5 will come out in September.

i really do hope so, but apple are very sneaky with releases these days lol, but hey if the predicted spec's are true then it will be worth the wait.

Guess that seals the deal then, thanks. One more question, can I download apps from iTunes on my Macbook, and transfer them to my iPhone? Just in case there's a sale between now and when I get the phone.
